This is what happens when a school is serious about their program.

What? Fire the coach after only three seasons? We've done that. Twice. Some people think we should do it again. I tend to agree with quite a few posters on eGriz. You don't maintain a level of consistency by firing a coach after only three seasons. Fans always want instant success, but it never works that way.

I wonder how many more seasons of awful football our diminishing fan base will have to endure before this misery ends.

Future's so bright at PSU, my friend. Gotta wear shades. :D

It does say something about a schools commitment to a program when one coach is fired going 21-14 while another is lauded for a bright future having gone 12-22 (regressing every season to this years record setting 0-11).

I am still confident I will not have to make good on my bet to eat my words the end of next season (we won't win more than 2 conference games). However, I do applaud @bigskyconf for his continued positive attitude. Not realistic but definitely uplifting in today's environment.

I'll provide the seasoning.

I'm going off topic here. I think my response should be under the Roberson topic or the Barnum topic, but I'll post it here. After three years, coaches are just beginning to get their own personnel for their own style of play. We have seen firsthand what happens when you bring in a whole new philosophy after three years. We had Walsh and a very successful ball-control offense and a strong defense when he left for Army, and instead of bringing in someone who could build on our running style, we decide to go with a run and shoot offense and a whole new defense. The run and shoot is pretty much a 180 from a ball-control offense and the team struggled. The run and shoot team had its best performance when Glanville's recruit, Hubel, ran it by throwing for 9 touchdowns against Weber. So after three seasons, we decide it is not working and instead of building around Hubel and a passing offense, we do another 180 and bring in Burton with a pistol offense that was built around the run. Hubel was a passer, he was not a runner (I believe his teammates called him "Big Bird") so we had to rebuild as a running team. Thankfully, he brought in an OC, Barnum, who tried to "hybrid" the pistol by throwing in some passing plays. Burton's best days in the pistol was actually when McDonnough was the QB. Another three seasons, we decide this is not working, so we get rid of Burton. Barnum is now ready to build his "BarnyBall" as a hybrid of the pistol, but built around passing. He gets lucky that he finds a quarterback ready to go with it in Kuresa. Result, playoffs the first year, and a super class of recruits for Barnum's style of play.

This year, Barnum had to find a replacement for Kuresa. This conference is not forgiving if you do not settle on a quarterback right away, and it showed us all year. This was a terrible year, but those kids that Barnum brought in fresh off the playoff appearance got experience in Barnum's system. Next year, their experience has to start paying off. Yes, the 0-fer season this year has created a tall hurdle to overcome. We are going to lose some recruits to EWU and other Big Sky schools, and playing the Rubber Duckies next year may be pretty rough. I think the play of the youngsters was really encouraging, but I will admit that Barnum is going to be on the hot seat at the beginning of the year. If PSU football does not come through for him next year, it will be much easier to let him go than it would be this year. Barnum has always been an offensive coach so it was easy for the DC to take the fall this year. However, no results next year and the bulls-eye will be on Barnum.

At this point next year, I will provide the salt. The future is bright. Gotta wear shades.

Perhaps a focus on defense may be a good idea. Our scoring offense in conference this season would have been good enough to beat the three BSC teams that are going to the playoffs if we matched them in scoring defense. Offensive touchdowns are neat, but give me a defense like Weber State had this season and I can live with less than 30 points per game on the offensive side of the ball.

Year...PSU Pts/game..Opp Pts/game...Record...2nd half scoring PSU/Opp
2015.......34...................22.............9-3..............196 - 129 ------------- 1st recruiting class
2016.......33...................39.............3-8..............182 - 226 ------------- 2nd recruiting class
2017.......23...................43.............0-11.............136 - 232 ------------- 3rd recruiting class

Facts are hard to ignore. Trend each year is negative. As Barnum has become more entrenched performance has decreased...offense and defense. We have become perhaps one of the worst 2nd half teams in the country. We seem unable to make adjustments and nothing is done to "fire up" the kids before hitting the field again. Leadership means hiring the best coaches, recruiting the best kids, having the best game strategy, and setting the right off field standards (as opposed to texting scandals). He did not take over a team in need of rebuilding...now it needs to be rebuilt.

But tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and in deference to my positive friend @bigskyconf - 2018 will be a new year and I am officially turning a new corner. I know that next year will be better (I won't say that's because it couldn't get worse). I am thankful we will improve next year. I am thankful we still have a football program. I am thankful we have good kids. I am thankful we have a good stadium to play in. I am thankful for positive fans. And I am thankful for the great sport of football.

Candidates emerge for Montana's head coaching opening

We don't need to subscribe to "premium" level, Colter. There is only one candidate the Griz are looking at. Some assistant coach down San Diego way, former Griz coach who wanted to take a shot at the glitz and glamour of UNLV football. I know you know who I am talking about, but I'll let you break the story. :D
