BOYLEN OUT; should we be worried?

Dr. Chris "Wankor" Hill formally announced today that Jim Boylen has been, in layman's terms, FIRED. Of course, I think Boylen was a great coach, especially for Weber fans. His antics were hilarious to watch. Anyway, the only reason I mention this is that I have been hearing rumours, unsubstantiated of course :? , that Hill is going to "aggressively" pursue his top candidates; one of these candidates, is supposedly the head basketball coach at Weber State.

Not only do Weber fans have to worry about Utah, but there are a number of other programs who will be looking for a qualified head coach. Wyoming might come knocking again. Even though, I haven't heard if Scholer (sp?) has gotten the boot yet. I'm sure that the Cowboys, who passed on Rahe after the 06-07 season, will have little leverage, but Utah, a school where Rahe has already coached, and recruited for, might make a compelling argument. Of course, another factor that Rahe might consider is that Wankor Hill has already Fired him once before. So...that bridge might already have been burned, but a multi-year contract worth 650K and bonuses, might be enough to rebuild it.

Should we be worried?

Yep, he's gone.

Personally, I'm a bit worried. Not a lot, but it is conceivable that Rahe would take that job.

It is flattering to a coach to be considered and to have his name mentioned as a possible coach candidate. I think Utah State fans should have more concern, as Stew's name has been mentioned all year as going to Utah. Randy Bennets's name is always mentioned for higher profile openings, but not sure hewants to re-build a program, moving up to Pac-12 level.

The money is always tantalizing, but isn't Utah now going to be paying for two coach contracts that were released?

Last, I think the alumni and big money backers are going to want a big name coach to get credibility and recruiting jumpstarted. Since they normally look down on Weber like a bothersome little brother, I don't think Coach Rahe has enough of a name for the backers. You know they will be pressing Hill to get a biggie.

Ultimately, it is out of the fans' hands. We
can just hope and pray that Coach Rahe is still working the sidelines for the Cats for some time.

If Stew leaves USU, I'm sure that the first person the Aggies would go after is Randy Rahe. This would be the best time for Stew to leave. It has been one of the greatest seasons in USU history. He will be losing 5 seniors and definitely will not be brining back a team as competitive next year. He might as well rebuild at the Utah.

IMO, I think Stew will never go. Utah tried to get Stew four years ago. Stew politely said "Hell No," then and will probably say the same thing now.

Heyoh, I think you are right. The Utah faithful will want a big name coach who can, immediately, return them to their winning ways. If not, I'm sure they will want a successful coach who has strong Ute ties. Jenkins might be a possibility.

This will be interesting to watch play out. If there is one positive in the bad losses to SJSU, Montana, and SMC; is maybe it makes Coach a little less attractive. Stew has been fiercely loyal to USU, but he's got to be looking at the WAC landscape come 2012. That dying conference might get him to Salt Lake. The WAC is the reason I don't worry about loosing Coach Rae to USU. Where I worry is the domino affect from openings at Texas Tech and others on the horizon.

Stew will never leave USU. He'll retire there, guaranteed. And after their little flap about scheduling games in Logan, I don't think Stew would give Hill the time of day to even discuss coaching at the U.

And one more thing, screw the Aggies! :butt:

There are some really good articles in local papers with the Boylen firing.

I agree with Kragthorpe that Chris Hill has to do something brilliant with this choice. He won't come to the BigSky (he tried that once already) and I don't think he'll hire an up-and-coming assistant (I personally think that Boylen was a major disaster). Things are heady at the U, PAC 12 and all that, and they will do something that makes a splash. They spent big bucks to hire Norm Chow as an assistant for their football program, watch for them to do something big for basketball. I don't think we worry there. Wyoming, geez, I don't know. It is really difficult to succeed at that place, and Rahe would have to want the money (and yes Tal, Schuler (sp) was fired with part of the season left so they are looking right now. I work with a WYO fan and he claims they are looking hard for a guy with Wyoming roots.)

Now Stew. He is not going anywhere and the Utes are not going to come calling (at least not seriously). The Aggies once again stand on the precipice. Lose tonight and what? 28-4 and NIT bound? Don't laugh, it is the point that Aggies fans can not get in their farmer brains, come tournament time, no one is impressed with Cindy-league scheduling. So I refer them to:

Now reread a couple of times the line that no team has been taken as an at-large team with only two wins against the Top 100 RPI teams -- and Utah State only has two this year. Personally, I think they are in, but good grief, didn't they learn anything from last year...or 2004. From the outside looking in, the Aggies and their yearly weak schedule is pathetic, but it has also turned Stew into the Cache County Genius. Everybody else will question if he can beat good teams on the road, or if they can actually win an NCAA tournament game -- because he has never shown he can, because he consistently schedules so he doesn't have to try. He can't hide up at the U and does anybody seriously think he can win on the road in the PAC 12? His resumé is more smoke and mirrors than anything.

Sorry, don't post often, but it is usually a rant :)

I am sure that Randy will be courted at a lot of places. It happens when you have a great coach. Utah probably will not be one of them. Their supporters would pull every last dolar, that hasn't already been pulled, from that program. In their minds, they are much too good to take a coach from the BSC. Fine with me. Crimson people are talking about Dave Rose, Stew (Probably a smoke screen) Morril, and others on that same or higher level. The thing you have to remember is that it is now, officially, musical chair time in the coaching world. If I were the Utes, and they haven't called to ask me, I would go get Phil Jonson. He is out there and he is that good.

Yeah, Rose and Stew aren't going anywhere. Johnson??? I'm sure the Utes would love to have him, but he is retired, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to be associated with that mess. I'm thinking Randy will be a Wildcat still when all is said and done. I'm not to worried.

The Utes wont come after a BSC coach, remember what happened the last time Utah hired a BSC coach?

Yeah it didnt go over very well.

p.s. I think Rahe is a much better coach than Giacolleti or however you spell it.

The same dumb ass that is starting a rumor that Rahe is a top candidate and doesn't post a URL showing what he is referencing.

"His resumé is more smoke and mirrors than anything."

Would you consider beating Weber State 10 out of the last 11, and teaching your current head coach his craft, as smoke and mirrors? Just wondering.

All of our local coaches are good. I just don't see any of them wanting the Utah job, reguardless of the money. With that said, I do think they will hire someone from the intermountain area or California. The new coach will need to understand Utah's culture as well as California's. The more I think about Phil Johnson the more I like the fit. If he is interested, he may be perfect for the job. :grizo1:

If Stew goes to the Utes (and I hope he doesn't) or when he retires, logically you would think Randy would be the top canidate to replace Morril in aggieville. I hope I am wrong and Rahe is our coach for the next 10 years, but it might be a pipe dream.

If there are any negatives on Rahe's resume is a not too stellar non-conference record, and the loss last year to UM. Starting Tues/Wed. we need to turn things around by first winning games in the CIB.

Utah is firing coaches all the time now. This is the third firing in 7 years and fourth hiring in 7 years.

I don't think Phil Johnson wil be the next coach unless maybe its only gonna be a few yrs.

Johnson hasn't been a college head coach for 39 YEARS.

Dis'ing stews career would be an indirect dis to rahe as well rahe was part of his career for half of it. Besides stew is rahes best friend.

I work with some Crimson Club members. I'll pump them for what little intellegence thay might have. Although Hill is saying that he is not in a hury to fill this position, his MO has been to have someone lined up prior to firing anyone. If that is true, and the coach they have in mind is playing in the post season, then the anouncement will be made right after that team is done with their season. If it is Phil, there is no need to wait.

I don't think Hill would have fired Boylen if he didn't already have an ashurance that a better coach was coming. At this level, these things are done in secret, by private head hunters. That is how Utah got Meyers and also how Florida got him. He knew he was going to Florida a month before it was made public.

Guilty... You and I have had conversations about this already. I agree with you about Dr. Hill.

As for the rumour...PLEASE, Mike do you know what unsubstantiated means?? Just curious. loooooool.

Honestly, more than anything else, I just wanted to get everyones opinion on Boylens demise. Rahe, in all likelihood IS NOT, a candidate. Really, I don't know if he is or isn't, but you all have to admit that there is a school somewhere really considering Rahe as the person to fill in their vacant basketball coach position. Weber has been lucky to hold onto him, and I hope he is still wearing Wildcat Purple next fall (I'm 75% sure he will be), but you know that a school is going to throw a crap load of cash his way.
