Breaking News: Darnell's out. Both

According to the Tribune Pete and Dennis were given their walking papers. WOW. We can't afford to hire any good replacements. I saw give the job to Grable. He has earned his due with this program.

This is also very interesting because supposedly Dennis Darnell was recently sent to the University of Central Michigan to learn their offense. He's a decent man who seemed to care about his players but perhaps the intricacies of the modern college offenses had passed him by. I wish both of them good luck in the future.

Now, who are the front running candidates, besides Grabel, for the offensive coordinator and quarterback's coach positions? I wonder if Downing had someone in mind before letting the Darnell's go? I'd like to see someone from the FBS ranks, if possible. Or perhaps, someone from the Montana staff, like Craig Ochs, who has Colorado roots.

I agree the timing is a bit odd. However, the play calling was horrible while Darnell was here. The problem is, we can't afford a top notch coordinator. That's why Grable is the perfect fit. He would probably do it for free. BTW, Ochs isn't on Montana's staff. Hasn't been for a few years.

Beardown, I like Keith Grable but I think this team needs someone fresh, someone from the outside who can come in and evaluate this team and the direction the offense should go in. A coach who can put this offense in a position to win with the talent they currently have.
I think someone who's been on the staff for as long as Grable would be constrained by the influence of having been around a mediocre program for so long. I know he was also here during the championship years but that was a long time ago.

No more spread that's all I want.
Unfortunately for you Blo, I think that if Orms is going to be the QB that the spread is probably the most suitable to his skills. It gives him the ability to tuck the ball and run up the middle, it gives him the ability to play action fake and either keep it himself or toss to the running back or TE. It allows him to press the corner and pitch to the back and it gives him the ability to play action fake and pass. Since he doesn't have the strongest arm, most of his passes will probably be the dink and dunk variety. Then when the db's start to creep up, go semi-deep. The spread also gives the offensive line better blocking angles.
It would be great to use a multiple offensive attack but that's what they had under Darnell.

the future of this offense is with the redshirt qb c. deen. if you have seen his high school film and, his exacution running scout 'o' last season, you've seen it. the kid has a very strong and accurate arm. he can get under center, or go gun. he can roll out, left or right and be on target. he appears to be a smart kid, and i'm sure these are all reasons downing brought him in. he needs to get abit stronger to survive for a full season in the big sky, but he's has got plenty of time for that. orms has the running ablity that deen may not have. but, i can see a year where we use both qb's in certain game situations.

one thing for sure downing is a smart dude. and, he'll surely bring in a o.c, o line coach, qb coach, and hopefully a 3rd coach to help go forward with the kids he has on campus and commited. he nows the teams needs. can jay get the funding thru to pull this off? lets hope so.

do we have to pay the darnells thru the rest of this school year? or is it pro-rated to yesterday? and, do the recruits who signed have the option to de-commit because of the firings? i think if a complete 'staff' leaves they can de-commit, but i don't know in this situation what happens.

work hard bears, the future looks bright at unc

I'm not sure, but a recruit should NEVER choose a school based on the coaches alone. It should never be a priority simply for a reason. Coaches come and go all the time. I've heard from good sources that a recruit should always choose a school based on 1. Tradition (which we have) and 2. Academics (which we have).

That's kinda what I thought when I first heard this news, because I remember reading that article in the Trib about Darnell being one the main reasons that OLineman from AZ came here. Thought to myself great, hope this doesn't hurt the recruiting class. BUT, I think Beardown is right, kids have to realize that coaches come and go. Just the nature of the business. In my opinion kids choose schools because they like it there and if fits them well. If any of these kids didn't like UNC they would've never signed.

You're kidding right? I would not put 'smart dude' and the winless wonder (fine, the 'nearly' winless wonder) in the same sentence. We've been down this road before, he changed OCs after year one(maybe it was year 2), and brought in Darnell to great fanfare, and it didn't help much.

I think the difference this time is the main criteria for the OC is experience according to Downing's quote in the Trib. I don't know if Darnell was an experienced offensive coordinator before he came to UNC. I think what Downing or Hinrichs should do is combine the salary (52K + 33K) that both Darnell's were receiving and pay it to one guy who can handle both the OC job and be the qb coach. Hopefully, they'll have some additional money for a good O-line coach as well.
How about taking some of the revenue that men's basketball has been pulling in and using it for football?

That's funny, Darnell's resume was 10 times better than Downings... I didn't care for the results either but on paper Darnell was very expierienced he just ran that God awfull spread I'm guessing just because it's in vogue at the moment.

He certainly ran the offense as if he didn't have any experience. None the less this was the right move, I just hope they can bring in a quality guy.

Personally I would just assume see the money from basketball stay with basketball, at some point we are going to have to give Boyle a raise to keep him around, and he and his program should benefit from their own success.
