Bruce Barnum

Is Barnum’s contract up after this year? I know he got a 5 year deal in 2015, but wasn’t clear if that started in ‘15 or ‘16. If his deal is up at the end of this year and he’s anything less than 4-4 in league it’s 100% time to move on given the results he’s gotten.

I had heard that he is signed through 2020, so next season?

OMG, we get yet another season of Barneyball. I really don't think the program will survive it.

This is true, he had a 1 year in 2015 then was granted the 5 year, so it will expire in 2020.

Funny what happens after the first conference game of the year. Griz fans have already anointed themselves national champions and Vik fans have fired their coach.

We only play 8 FCS opponents per year; 1/8th of your season can tell you a lot.

Well, it seems everyone likes trends. Here is something interesting. A Barnum coached team has never won their conference opener, not even in 2015.

2015, lost to North Dakota 19-17
2016, lost to Southern Utah 45-31
2017, lost to Montana 45-33
2018, lost to Montana State 43-23
2019, lost to Idaho State, 51-24

For what its worth......

I thought you weren't new here.

John Canzano talks with Portland State Vikings football head coach, Bruce Barnum ahead of their opening game at Hawaii. Canzano asks Barnum how he analyzes what happened in Hawaii's opener against UCLA, how he is feeling about his quarterback and the decision to name a starter, if the kickoff time in Hawaii is concerning, what keeps him up at night heading into the season, the details on John Krahn's WWE inquiry, and much more.

Canzano hyped his interview and mentioned Viktoberfest.

It’s something.

"Fans who want to take the Max Train to the game can take a complimentary shuttle from the Orenco Station stop to Hillsboro Stadium for select games."

Uh, so i take the Max out there and find out that it is a "select game" if a shuttle shows up?

Considering the defense packed up after Northern Colorado…

…it amazes me that the google search for his contract extension leads completely to what he signed in 2015. I’m trying to find out the length of the extension. Crickets.

Now, on one hand, do we have evidence that Pflugrad was railroaded instead of being guilty of violations that caused the 2011 season to be vacated? For that matter, do we have evidence that he’s making Northern Arizona better than they would otherwise be?

As I watch the controversy on eGriz about Bobby Hauck, a thought. When I was living in Boise, BSU was looking for the promising upcoming coach rather than people from the past. They seemed to get a nostalgia streak after Chris Petersen left, and they arguably haven’t been the same doing that. Who’s kicking it in D-2 and would find $200K or so to be an upgrade? Who has fresh ideas? Or what’s wrong with going the way PSU did when they hired Mouse Davis from Hillsboro HS? Maybe it’s time to look at Chris Miller. Or maybe I think about how Roosevelt punches above their weight in NoPo and see if Neil Lomax (to undercut my argument) sees Ryan McCants as quality. More than one approach here, obviously.

From our own Ken Goe, OLive...

https://www.oregonlive.com/collegefootball/2012/12/fair_or_not_oregon_assistant_r.html

Note the quote from Montana VP Jim Foley, "Coach Pflugrad is a good and decent person who tried to do things the right way. I applaud him for it."

Pflugrad was a former PSU player back in the Mouse Davis days so he knows what a winning program at PSU can do for the city. He also was a coach at both PSU and Oregon so he knows the recruiting base here. Also, he has seen, both while being here and at other Big Sky schools, the struggles that PSU athletics go through almost daily. He has been to the mountaintop in the Big Sky conference so he knows how to win. When most programs are down, they look for an alum to guide them back, and an alum with a proven record is most definitely an asset. Montana did it by hiring back Hauck. PSU can do the same with Pflugrad. It would be a stepping stone for both to get back to the top where both belong.

I have made the decision to withhold any further financial support for the football program until such time that the administration does right by the players, recruits, students, community and athletic program by AT LEAST replacing Barnum. I am sick and tired of mediocrity. If the goal of any university athlete is to just earn a "participation trophy" than fine, let's move to intramural. How many of our student-athletes at PSU do you think do not want to compete and excel ? How long will any program, at any level, survive and provide value to the participants if they perceive an acceptance of mediocrity ?

Let's look at the records of Big Sky football programs with coaches of similar tenures :

PSU 7yrs 26-43
EWU 5yrs 47-17
UCD 5yrs 31-22
WSU 8yrs 58-36

Let's dare not even include the Montana schools or Sac State.

A football program at this level is the lifeblood of the rest of an athletic department ( unless you're Gonzaga - lol ). We are slowly choking the life out of the A.D. I agree with Pounder's assessment that there is likely a diamond in the rough if the administration just has the balls to pull the trigger !

You know it’s a curious position to be in when the only reference one can find on Google to Barnum’s contract status is an off handed comment late in a different thread on this board. Maybe we need a sticky thread to pin these things down… but we need someone to man the pins.

Supposedly, one more year on the contract. Not going to speculate if it it’s like the deal Bryan Harsin had at Boise State, where he got a year tacked on for every winning season. And then he bailed for Auburn and lasted 1.5 seasons. (Not sure if Auburn is currently still paying three former HCs right now, but I heard something along those lines.)

So how are we these days when it comes to buying out a couple hundred grand? Seems slightly unlikely. New AD does mean Barnum needs to think in terms of having a foot out the door.

BTW- anyone else hear that MBB beat Oregon State last weekend?
