BSC Tournament

Is it me or is it not that bad to finish 3rd in the BSC this season?

We'd get another home game that we should win, then go play Montana in Ogden. I like our chances against Montana away from Missoula.

Yeah, it's another game, but It'd be on the 7th, and our next game wouldn't be until the 10th. Of course the flip side thought would be that we'd want the seed that we're going to play if we pull the 2nd seed to had played a game, but who knows. Honestly, we play well at home and a win could be just what the doctor ordered going into Ogden.

Thoughts?

Most teams have a a very thin edge going into the Semis after already playing a game, they are already warmed up. Anything is possible, but I dont want anyone beating my Wildcats.

The Viks have to get hot at the right time or they could go home after Round 1. Its been a roller coaster season nobody was expecting, especially after that Gonzaga win. Hopefully Coach Bone can get these guys to play hard at the right time.

As for Weber, they are the favorite for now, but if they don't play their cards right they could get caught looking ahead to.

It's you. PSU still has a fighting chance to win the autobid (if I were another BSC team, I wouldn't want to face PSU in a one-and-done format), but only having to win two homes games would have made a big difference.

So if PSU wins in round 1 (considering they dont beat UM out for the 2nd place spot), how many of you will be planning on coming to Ogden for the tourney?

All of this talk assumes we'll come in third. Good assumption - but in fact we seem to have an outside chance of coming in second, I'm told if we beat Eastern today and UNC wins tomorrow. Is that for a fact? Apparently, it has to do with tie-breakers. If we win today we'll be tied with Montana for second. SOMEHOW, that hangs on the UNC/MSU game. I looked on the Big Sky site and can't find the tie breakers rules. Can someone help here?

The tiebreaker in the case of PSU and UM finishing tied at 11-5 is how the teams did against the other teams, starting at the top. Both were swept by my :D humble :D Wildcats (1 seed), split against each other (2/3 seed), and also split against ISU (4 seed). So it comes down to the 5th and 6th place teams -- UNC and MSU -- assuming PSU beats EWU.

If PSU beats EWU and UNC beats MSU (and I think that's the most likely outcome of those 2 games), then UNC sweeps MSU and finishs ahead of the Bobcats, so PSU gets the 2 seed and the tiebreaker over UM beause PSU swept UNC and UM split with the Bears. If MSU wins at UNC and finishes ahead of da Bears, then UM gets the 2 seed because they swept MSU and PSU split.

Did that help?

That's pretty much correct, but the reason it comes down to UNC or MSU is because the first few tiebreakers don't resolve the situation. The first tie breaker if your conference record is the same is head-to-head record, PSU and UM split their two games. The next tie breaker is how both teams did against the team with best remaining conference record in the league. That is Weber, but both teams were swept so that doesn't resolve it. The next best conference record after that is Idaho State, both teams split with ISU, so that doesn't resolve it. So then it comes down to who did the best against the team that finishes 5th, which could be MSU or UNC.

Got it. If split with UNC, then what? Flip of the coin? All of this goes to show just how tight the conference has been this year. Except for Weber State, of course. :-)

So we've got a little more rest time. Dont know if that's good or bad. Given how erratically we've been playing, I hope it'll give us time to settle down. With Nelson scoring more, Jones doing his thing, and JD, Mara, and Waters et al sinking the threes, we've got a good chance.

Geez, espn.com had listed the game at 9 EST. Missed it on Big Sky TV.

Oh well. Number 2 seed. Not too shabby.

Part of me wanted another home game, but it's always nice to be ahead of Montana:

PSU lands No. 2 seed, berth in Big Sky semis

http://www.oregonlive.com/vikings/index.ssf/2009/03/psu_lands_no_2_seed_berth_in_b.html

Portland State claimed the No. 2 seed for the Big Sky Conference tournament after Northern Colorado defeated Montana Sate 77-50 Sunday in Greeley, Colo., setting the match-ups in the six-team playoff field.

The Vikings earned a berth into the March 10 semifinals at the Dee Events Center in Ogden, Utah, putting them on the opposite side of the tournament bracket from top-seeded Weber State.

PSU defeated Eastern Washington 66-62 in overtime Saturday to finish tied with Montana for second place, then got the help it need from Northern Colorado on Sunday to earn the tie-breaker and relegate Montana to the No. 3 seed.

Sunday's decision means the Vikings have nine days to prepare for its first playoff game against the highest seed to advance from the quarterfinals.

In next Saturday's quarterfinals, Montana State will play at Montana, and Northern Colorado will travel to Idaho State, with the winners advancing to Ogden for a shot at the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.

You didn't miss anything, Marty. The frame froze up part way through the first half and we had only the audio the rest of the way. UNC really did blow them away. Don't know what happened to MSU - they're better than that.
