OK, that's the first time I've used that derogatory term for them. LOL.
Apparently, the school is shifting traditionally academic PE obligations to the athletic budget to the tune of almost $2M. That means that FOR THE TIME BEING they will have to cut funding to nine as-yet unidentified programs (and there's no word on what that means in terms of individual program partial loss of funding or outright dumping). Davis fields 27 varsity sports, far outpacing the Big West, which sponsors 18 and sees an average of 18.5 sports per school. The AD busted out the old military euphemism of "rightsizing," even though he foresees making up the current deficit in future years. I forget the rationale, but he claims that what school is essentially "taking away" in terms of funding of obligations is actually bigger than the school claims by quite a bit.
Not sure what this means in terms of Causeway, but I'm concerned that the gymnastics version will take it in the shorts; Davis usually has a decent program there, though clearly not up to the level of the Hornets. Clearly, they're not going to touch football or hoops, where the girls made the BW Tournament finals and may go dancing pending results this weekend.
Anyone care?
