Bye-Week Blues: Most Underrated Player Ever?

My Pick: Harrison Nikolao.

A weightroom freak, this Polynesian beast received 2nd Team Big Sky honors in 2005 at nose tackle, but then switched to offensive guard his senior year (to help a young offensive line? A better pro fit?). He was a leader of the team during the rough 2006 season (Nichols' debut) but is widely regarded as one of the shaping forces of the younger generation (Nichols, Boyce, Peach etc.), predominently stemming from a players-only speech he gave which involved him back-handing an old overhead projecter half-way across the locker room with no more effort than if he were shooing a fly.

A good player and an evern better guy, Harry, IMHO, is an unsung hero.

Yeah the backhand to the projector is the stuff of legend. He also launched his helmet into orbit as time expired in the upset bid against Southern Illinois in the 2004 playoffs.

My vote is Brandon Nicholson AKA B Nichs. Dude was so fast and strong, he LITERALLY ran out of his skin. I mean his leg looked like a hot dog that was left in the microwave too long. Split along the length. Crazy.

I couldn't agree more with Harry as the pick. What I love most about him is his passion for our program. I'm certain he could suit up today and rally the troops to a win. Man, I loved Renard too. Can't think of another player who played with as much fire on the field.

We call that the ripper.

One of my all time favorite players was Joey Qwik. He was always very aggressive, and would get to the ball.

I agree, but it's very hard to consider Joey "Underrated".

You are correct, but it seems he has been forgotten over time. If you really want me to be honest, I think Craig McIntyre was extremely underrated as well. That guy seemed to have at least one big third down catch to save a drive every game.

That's a good call. And much like Kaufman, he seemed to play hurt a lot of the time.

Also, isn't it "Cwik?" As in Joey, and Chris Cwik. Maybe I am wrong in that one.

EWWURanger,
Joey Cwik and Chris are brothers. Haven't heard much about Joey lately, last time I spoke with Joey, he was in Medical School, becoming a Doctor. He worked a little out of Sacred Medical Center. Both of them went to Mead High. Chris is temporarily in the Academy for the Cheney fire department. Found that out the da the FB Team moved into the Field House because of the smoke from the Forrest Fires. Joey played hurt most of the time, he didn't want to leave the field unless he had to. Joey was an Outstanding LB. Heard today will be the last day of practice until next week Tuesday. Nice the Players are getting some time off. I saw many New Players out yesterday to practice. I think we can have as much as 100 Players now that school have started. Vic Wallace

EWUeag,
There was nothing underrated about Joey Cwik. That young man was an Outstanding Player. I would have like to see him and Ronnie Hamlin on the field together. I saw Joey play with blood all over his body/uniform, all he would do is have the injury taken care of, and back on the field. Hope he is still in Doctor School. Vic Wallace

Great pick! He was definitely clutch.

To All,
Attended practice on Wednesday, was very happy to see some of the injured practicing, which includes #20 - Sam McPherson, RB, #53 Jonah Jordan, DL, #28 Jalen Moore RB. We will be ready when we meet Cal Polly. Name of the young man from Cascade High, Leavenworth, WA Dennis Merritt, RB, he has very good break away speed. Checked out his film. I am very much impressed with his ability to run the ball. Heard that Todd Raynes got the clearance to start playing again, which will be a great help to our Defense. Nic Sblendorio said he will be ready for Cal Polly Game also. Vic Wallace

Hey Vic, that's a lot of good news. Hopefully all of our injured players are on the road to recovery and able to contribute to the team as we get into the mix of conference play.

Prepared Occasional Meal for some of the Players staying at EWU, since they are off until Tuesday. Prepared meals for 15 people, if they so desire to eat some "Outstanding Grub" ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) Letter turned into Compliance Officer. Friday 4 p.m. for the feed. Will wait until 5 p.m. since the Players have classes. I enjoyed doing this for our Athletes, Don't think I am going to be doing much longer, I am really getting tired, 81 years is nothing to shake a stick at ;) ;) ;) ;) ;). Lately had to stop and take a break, get very tired. Glad I have been able to help our Athletes. Vic Wallace

Vic, you're the best. We're really fortunate to have someone who has contributed so much for so long. God bless you.

93bird,
Thanks for the compliment. Like I have said many times, had my beautiful wife lived, I wouldn't have known our Athletes, they wouldn't have known me. Doing what I do or have done, isn't for anything in return, it really help myself and daughter to deal with mom leaving this world on Aug. 17th, 1999. They are my Daughters and Sons away from home. Again thanks for the compliment. Got to get some sleep. Good Morning! Vic Wallace

Vic... you are the man! We all appreciate your support of Eagle athletics...!

For most underrated players, I'll pick a couple of guys from a couple decades ago.

Rex Prescott is one of the best RBs Eastern has ever had, yet is seldom remembered in the same light as Taiwan Jones. People remember that great 97 team and think of Leons throwing to Ogden or Vijil. In truth, Prescott was the driving force of that offense (along with a superb OL). At about 5'7" 150, he looked more like a waterboy than a premier DI running back, yet he piled up almost 2,000 yards that year. And to make it even stranger, he wasn't a Taiwan-esque guy who made a couple of cuts and turned on the jets; instead, it was mostly zone plays where he found 5-8 yards at a time on first and second down.

The other guy I'd mention is Tommy Williams. He was renowned as a great player-- an all-time great at Eastern-- but never got the crazy stats of Greg Peach. That said, he was probably a more complete DE than Peach, equally capable of harrassing a QB as he was locking down the edge. Even people who remember that 92 team (arguably the best defense ever at Eastern) think more of Jason Marsh and his thousand or so tackles, but Williams was the best player on that team. I don't even think he was recruited as a DL as he was a thin-ish 235 or thereabouts and looked more basketball than football.

Again, both guys were sensational players that got a lot of attention, but for whatever reason, don't seem to get remembered in the same vain as some of their more recent counterparts.
