BYU linebacker Ah You is transferring

Provo » Brigham Young football coach Bronco Mendenhall announced Monday night that inside linebacker Matt Ah You is transferring from BYU.

Ah You has one season of eligibility remaining. A BYU news release did not specify to which school Ah You is transferring, but it is believed to be Weber State.

The senior could not be reached for comment Monday.

Ah You can transfer to a NCAA Football Championship Subdivision school, such as Weber State, without having to sit out a year.

"Matt has made a decision to transfer to finish his final season of eligibility, and I have granted him a release," Mendenhall said. "I appreciate his contributions to our program and wish him the best as he pursues his personal goals."

Ah You graduated from Lone Peak High in northern Utah County and was a three-year letter winner at BYU. He played in 26 games in the 2003, 2004 and 2008 seasons.

In 2008, he played in all 13 games and started twice.

The 5-foot-11, 220-pound linebacker totaled 68 tackles, one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery in three seasons with the Cougars.

This is sad news on the WSU campus that a BYU'r may be joining our enrollment.

The bright side: He has seen the puple shaded light and will get to grow a beard and hair longer than military standards!

He might have a hard time after 3 yrs of 9am curfew, hopefully he can focus after the radical change! lol

Lol, I think that's great anytime we can get any one from fetching BYU to see the light and come to here.

Catcat, please be careful not to let your tongue get stuck permanently in your cheek. We don't want you to bite it off.

Can anybody confirm or deny that this kid is actually coming to WSU?

Since Matt only has one remaining year of eligibility, I don't think he is eligible to play if he transfers to another DI program. :(

It is assumed that he is going to come to Weber. He wants to stay close to home and family (Alpine Utah), and is looking for a program that has the best chance of success and can help him develop. Even with only a year of eligibililty Matt can still transfer to Weber. The NCAA allows FBS athletes to transfer to FCS without being penalized or having to sit out for a year. He could have a huge impact on the team automatically...

I do not doubt that Matt can transfer to Weber State, but based on the NCAA transfer rules, I do not see how he can play football, unless he was not a scholarship athlete

Excerpted from page 20:

Exceptions for Divisions I and II
If this is your first transfer …

...Note that in football you may be eligible to use this exception if:
a. You transfer from a Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) school to a football championship subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) school and have at least two seasons of competition remaining; ...

Note: If you do not qualify for this exception due to any of the conditions in Subsection 1 above, you may be able to use the exception if you were not recruited by your first four-year school and have never received an athletics scholarship...

P.S. - I hope I am WRONG and that Matt will be playing for the Wildcats next year!

Nice find Native... Awesome, as always...

However, I think I found an amendment... If the player graduates with eligibility remaining then the player can transfer and play as a grad student... Its very likely that he has graduated or will this summer. He played two years before his mission had a red-shirt and medical red-shirt (I believe) and then played another year. With that many years of school, he, most likely, has graduated, and can come to Weber as a grad student and play for the Cats with only one year of eligibility...

I sure hope you're right! Thanks for the reminder. Now that that you mention it, I do recall the graduate exception which came out a couple of years ago, but thought it had been rescinded after a firestorm of controversy.

So here is what I found from http://www.ncaa.org/wps/ncaa?ContentID=420 :

..."a student-athlete who has eligibility remaining and is within the specified five-year period may participate while enrolled in a graduate or professional school at a Division I college or university other than the institution at which he or she completed an undergraduate degree, provided he or she meets the criteria of the one-time transfer exception to the general transfer residence requirement. That exception is as follows:

•The student-athlete must be seeking to participate in a sport other than baseball, football, basketball and men's ice hockey, except that a student-athlete who seeks to participate in NCAA Football Championship Subdivision may use this exception only if transferring from a Football Bowl Subdivision program.

•The student-athlete may not have transferred previously from another four-year institution unless he or she transferred previously and received an exception to the transfer residence requirement because his or her institution either discontinued the sport or did not sponsor the sport in which the student-athlete is a participant.

•The student must have been in good academic standing and eligible to compete had he or she decided to remain at the previous institution.

•The student-athlete's previous institution must certify in writing that it has no objection to the student-athlete being granted an exception to the transfer residence requirement...."

As always, there is enough legaleze in any NCAA document to withold final judgment, but it looks like we may just have a new linebacker!

He isn't on our roster. I'm going out on a limb here and saying that he isn't going to be playing at Weber State. However, he could be a late addition or waiting on the NCAA to grant him an approval, or he could be redshirting.
There is also another possibility...maybe he is still a BYU student until the end of the summer and will enroll in a Weber State grad program. So until he graduates, he wont be on Weber's roster. I'm sure that is nothing but a chimerical statement.

Your "chimerical" statement is the one that makes the most sense.

I did check SUU's and Dixie States rosters... SUU didn't have him on their roster. Dixie State hasn't updated their roster. It still the 2008 roster, so I don't know if he will be playing in the South. I did try to find some info on him, but couldn't find anything. I asked a couple players, but they didn't really know.

Nice word huh, I'm studying for the GRE...words like "Chimerical" have been randomly showing up in my everyday speech.

WSU doesn't have an updated roster on the web yet. So the fact that you don't see his name on there doesn't mean anything.

Its the 2009 Roster... http://www.weberstatesports.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=8600&SPID=3468&SPSID=39323.. His name isn't on it. This is the pre-camp roster. Yes, some names could be added, but right now, this is the team.

Yeah, when I checked it the other day I was shocked to see that it was the updated roster.
