What their publication provided: How BYU can be successful (Viking Offense): If BYU football can contain Josh Kraght and control the line of scrimmage, the Cougars defense should have a good game. The Vikings do not have a lot of offensive options to go to if Josh Kraght is contained. The Vikings will probably have a decent year offensively in their conference because of their dual-threat running quarterback and experienced offensive line, however against the big BYU defensive line, the Vikings may have struggles.
PSU Viking Strategy enhancement: Create reliable, unexpected offensive threats (perhaps in player combinations) in addition to Kraght.
What their publication provided: How BYU can be successful (Viking Defense): BYU should be able to run very well against the Vikings. With a depleted defensive line and no returning starting linebackers, the Cougars should be able to convert a lot of “3rd and short” plays. BYU football should also be able to pick apart the secondary with a lot of drop-off passes. The deep play and the trick-play options will not be as effective as the Cougars may like, so holding off until other opponents may be in their best interest.
PSU Viking Strategy enhancement: Practice up effective 3rd down and short combinations on defense. Play bend but don't break defensive strategy.
What their publication provided: How BYU can be successful (Viking Special Teams): Get a blocked kick. Last season, Jonathan Gonzales had two field goal attempts blocked. If BYU can get a block early, it could affect Gonzales the rest of the game. On punts, having good coverage can be huge. FBS schools love it when FCS schools have a great punter. It allows for big returns as the returning team is normally much bigger and faster than the coverage team.
PSU Viking Strategy enhancement: Just knowing this expectation of theirs is beneficial; thwarting it through full execution is key (execute kicking game fully); take a lesson from North Dakota State and not feel any intimidation from any opponent.
What I care about is we give them a run for their money. We play to our utmost on our upward path to ever improving.
