After the game Coach Rahe said we were "getting closer." That is worrisome. I love the guy, but if he thinks we are close to being a good team, he is drunk. The turnovers at the start of the game, the missed shots, players scared shitless, etc. UVU gave the Aggies a game tonight. We'll be lucky to beat them next week. God help us.

I liked the lineup change! Thought Hajek put up a great effort inside. Weber has a long way to go.

He also said he doesn't care about wins and losses, just about getting better. :wall: And that Weber has the hardest schedule in the conference, which isn't true.

Positives:
The new starting line-up looks like it has potential. Hajek looked better than he has all season. Nice little left-handed hook. They need him to be a low-post presence.
Senglin continues to improve. 5 assists, 2 turnovers. Plus he was able to get to the rim on numerous occasions.
In the second half Hill was able to get some open looks from the 3 point line and he knocked them down. Someone is going to have to make 3s for this team.
Hunter continues to demonstrate potential at the point
Defensive intensity looked good (after the first 5 minutes or so)

Negatives:
I really thought Golden was going to be a high percentage shooter from 3. He wasn't even close on many of his shots. He seems to have trouble getting himself set.
Johnson-Coston provided a bit of a spark off the bench in the first half, but on the whole he demonstrated no shooting touch. Too many shots around the rim that he couldn't knock down.
Turnovers at the start of the game due to just plain dumb passes.
Rebounding - our guards need to get to the glass better.

But on the whole, I walked away from last night's game seeing more good than bad. I'm with Rahe, the team is improving. And that is the name of the game right now. I know this frustrates many on this forum, but be realistic - this team was not going to waltz through the OOC schedule with 8 or 9 wins. They don't have the talent or experience. Weber has lost a lot of talent in the last two years and had a recruiting class that would have been seniors this year go bust. Give it some time.

The new starting line-up looks awesome! I think going forward it gives WSU a chance to win. I will go as far to say that if this line up started against Utah State that Weber would've won that game. I'm confident we be better prepared for conference play if Rahe wasn't so stubborn! One of the few times this year we didn't get dominated inside! Hajek looked great and did what he needed to do to help the team. Weber needs him as a low-post presence. I hope Rahe's smaller line up experiment is over and Joel stays at the 4! James did miss some easy shots, but overall for Weber was the player of the game. I could only wonder what our bigs can do there next year.

The biggest Weber problem going forward is their lack of an identity on offense! Dribble, pass, dribble until the shot clock winds down and then jack up an ill advised shot. It might be time to go back to the inside out game and open up some lanes for uncontested shots. Can't do that with joel in the middle because he can't handle the ball. He makes more turnovers than the Pillsbury doughboy!

Coach Rahe's press conferences mean nothing because all he says all the right things. He actually says nothing at all! BYU was the better team by far....... They have an identity and they embrace it. I think Rahe has this team so confused that they struggle playing basketball. It might be time to let your horses run and quit pulling on the bridle. Play to your strengths versus trying to look like EWU or other teams as Olds said earlier in the year. Funny the best post of the year might be from Sacstate warning us about the intoxicating nature of Purple kool aid! I thought going smaller then was dumb then and I think it's even dumber now! :twocents:

I agree that starting Hajek should continue. Golden is giving us nothing and shouldn't be starting. For supposedly being our best pure shooter, Golden has looked awful all year. Not that surprising though when you look at his JC shooting percentages.

We have 3 OOC games left to get ready for conference play and last night was a great start. I know we got our butts kicked, but with Hajek in the middle I think we will be a match up problem going forward! The wizard of Ogden should've stuck to the basics and not move so many players around this year. Van Pelt is struggling, but he also might provide some positive minutes backing up Hajek !

Olds, might be a good time to go talk to Rahe. Go back to using OUR strengths. Hajek did a great job last night. He's not Tresnak, but it'll free up Joel later to do more...... It was nice to have a presence in the post last night!

I don't want anyone to choke on their milk this morning, but Weber has more assist than turnovers last night and Joel had ONE turnover!
The team is making progress, it's a coaches primary responsibility to put the team in a position to win. I don't think that Rahe has done a good job with that! Rahe has actually maybe been part of the problem. Hopefully he's figuring it out!

I agree that the team is better when Hajek & Bolomboy are both in the game. But don't fool yourself. BYU has no inside game and we still had problems there. Hajek is a below average center by any standard outside the Big Sky, but I think he can compete in the Sky. Bolomboy is a freak athlete but definitely not at the same level as a basketball player. We can count on him for a 2-3 blocks, 10+ rebounds, 10+ points and lots of turnovers. If he could pass, the collapsing on him would create opportunities for easy baskets from his teammates. Unfortunately he has below average passing skills. The two of them together will do well in the Big Sky but not against higher level competition.

The best that we can hope for from Golden is about 30% on three's, an occasional drive to the hoop where he gets blocked more often than not. So why should he be starting? At best he is a decent backup. He isn't exceptionally quick, he is not a great 3-pointer and he is really the size of a point (6'1") but can't play there.

Jonathan Johnson-Coston has no shot. Can't even dunk it consistently if he has even a modicum of defense on him. We are lucky if he can somewhat consistently make a lay up. He plays OK defense but isn't big enough to play it against 6'8"+ power forwards. I bet that in his bare feet he doesn't even measure 6"5". He will be able to play in the Big Sky as a decent backup but doesn't have the skill to be a starter, make a difference in a game or compete at a higher level.

Hayden Hunter should have been red-shirted. He is not ready to add anything consistently at this point. I think he will develop into an adequate point with modest shooting ability. The same goes for Ryan Richardson. He should have been red-shirted. I think he will end up being a great shooter/scorer hopefully
playing at the 2, his natural position. He is not a rebounder, nor a guy who can take it to the hoop or mix it up inside. He is a two and can develop into a very good one if used correctly. It is a shame that Rahe has wasted one of his years of eligibility. He never plays meaningful minutes so why wasn't he redshirted?

I think Rahe knew that his incoming recruits this year were not ready to be productive players. Once he realized that he got a little desperate and went out and hastily recruited two very lightly recruited JC's in Coston and Golden to try to fill in the blanks. Unfortunately they aren't good enough to close the gap.

Rahe has become obsessed with recruiting athletes. Unfortunately many of them are not very skilled as basketball players. i.e., Coston, Golden, Hunter, Gittens and Hill. Each of these guys are without specific skills needed to be Div I bballers with enough skills to take Weber to the next level. The verdict is still out on whether Braxton, Richardson and Jefferson will turn out to be athletic basketball players or just good athletes. Hopefully they will prove to be both.

I agree with many posts here. Rahe doesn't seem flexible enough to adjust in games to defenses. To implement offenses to handle different defensive sets. I watched last nights game and was disgusted how many times Weber came down the floor against the same zone defense and never changed their approach as to how they attacked it. Insanity - doing the same thing expecting different results…

We have to be realistic about this season. It is going to be a long and disappointing one. We are going to lose a lot of games that we never expected to lose. We will make the Big Sky playoffs but that is where the season will end. I don't think we even have the team to even earn a spot in the lowly CBI.

We aren't particularly quick Our defense could not handle the quick passing outside shooting offense of BYU. BYU always got a man open for a good shot. Sometimes so open that even Olds could have hit the 3 pointer. We have no inside game and thus the outside game struggles. We have no outside game thus the inside game struggles. We are just not a well put together team. Too many players lacking specific skills, not enough shooting ability, not enough ball handling skills.

For me, unlike many posters here, the bright spot on the team in Senglin, getting better every game. Bolomboy seems to be regressing. Hill just doesn't have it but is slightly better than Coston and Golden. Hajek has a low ceiling, Richardson and Hunter are not ready. Thats the eight who play. Too many shortcomings in that group. Results - a long and disappointing season. There will be at least 4 teams in the Sky who are better than we are. We will be lucky if we end the season at 500! But next year...

Agree with everything!
Johnson Coston, man :wall: he could have easily been in double figures. Missed dunk missed layups and hook shots. My goodness he has no touch. But he is the only one who would post up on the foul line and get the ball into the interior of the 2-3 zone. Other than that we would dribble pass dribble pass, oh sh!t shoot. I liked his effort but man oh man...
James looked good. Defiantly missed too many easy lay ups but I liked his effort.

Senglin got some easy driving layups off the bounce because he was in control and wasnt alway looking to get to the rim and crashing into people. I dont want to say this after one game but it looks as if he is learning.

BYU had more turnovers than us! Amazing.

I have been calling for that line up from the beginning and I think they showed flashes as to what they could be with that line up. James looked good and he will get better but I will say it again, he is a senior but not a with a lot of game experience. It is hard to get that sitting on the bench injured there is a huge difference and he has never been someone we have expected to score so give Hume time now that he is in the starting line. I think that the old line up hurt Joel, Hill, and Golden the most because they struggled to figure out what to do beginning out of position and in Golden case coming from JC with lesser competition to D1. After thinking about though I have to wonder if Rahe did that on purpose though, if you go with that starting line up the whole time it gives the BSC time to prepare and a lot more film to watch. Maybe just a thought.

Something's that new group have got to work on though is Joel and James passing out of the double and not forcing things, Gittens being more consistent (10pts, 4r, 4a a gm), Hill staying out of early foul trouble (but he was guarding a possible NBA shooter). Hill has got to give us (10p, 7r, 3a a gm) and then Joel and Jeremy continuing to improve. Our bench has got to help Coslton has got to hit those easy shots that our guards create for him, Golden has got to do what Gittens did last yrs off the bench, Hunter's confidence has to improve (shoot the ball), and play the other 2 some more just to help. Coach please let them run, please.!

Oh if you don't think we have the toughest schedule check again and we still haven't played OU yet. Indiana is not the old Indiana and USC has been a joke for yrs. They don't compete on any level at all. EWU lost last night to Illinios St at home and the 13 pt final was as close as it got. We had our chances late against them and lost by 9 on a neutral floor. Just wait

EWU didn't play Illinois St last night....they play Washington today....don't know where you get your info...maybe lay off the Kool-aid

Sorry '3Wildcats' but someone must temper your optimism (your earlier post of calling a Weber win vs BYU) & your latest post...the EWU loss to Illinois St. was in the FCS FOOTBALL playoffs! EWU has played arguably as tough of a OOC schedule as Weber St (with more success I'd say).

Don't want to throw cold water onto the purple Kool-Aid drinkers, so I'll ease of my rants until Big Sky play starts--the REAL BASKETBALL season to our Coach Rahe & many others. :kisswink:

EWU did play Illinois St last night. 3Wildcats just has the wrong sport.
The EWU - Illinois St game was a football game. the 59-46 score might've thrown him.

1) you give Rahe too much credit
2) EWU didn't play ISU last night
3) we don't have anywhere near the toughest OOC schedule!

Youngguns and others my fault just saw the scroll on espn however younguns it is tougher. Illinios St from the toughest mid major conference, Wichita St #11 and a #1 seed last yr. Northern Iowa, top 25, and Illinois St is picked 3rd or 4th in that league. LSU from the SEC with a kid that is possible one and done in Mickey and they go on the road and beat West Virginia #16 in WVU. I warned you all about UTA before the game they give #8 UT a problem at home, ORU should win there conference or at least top 3, and OU is top #20 team on a roll still to play. BYU had a chance against Utah they are a good team

I will say it again Indiana isn't even close to the old IU of the past they are playing a lot of freshmen. USC they are a joke of a program guys are quitting at the beginning of the season

What is this F-O-O-T-B-A-L-L you speak of?????? College basketball is the only sport that counts (lucky for you Weber fans)........BTW I don't see ANYONE holding EWU to 46pts this year

207. That will improve after today's game at unbeaten and 17th ranked Washington.
