Cal game

Congratulations on your first win of the season. The Bears were also fortunate week #1 to beat UNC at Chapel Hill last Saturday. We are looking forward to hosting the Wildcats this weekend at Berkeley and would love to hear your thoughts on our upcoming game. Looking at your roster and stats from your first game,I feel it is going to be competitive. The Wildcats have some weapons and are talented. How do you look at how we line up offensively and defensively and special teams? I imagine the Wildcats are motivated to beat a Pac 12 team. This season, the Bears are learning a new defense and offense under first year coach Justin Wilcox and new coordinators. Our first game success has us very optimistic about the season! How many fans are you bringing out? And how many may live here in the Bay Area? Looking for a great, injury free game!

I'm sure that Cal is expected to win big in this one. With 20+ more scholarship players and attracting a higher level of athlete at the PAC12 level, it doesn't stack up to be a good matchup for us. It's a money game for us. We've had a good defense at the FCS level for the last few years and that should not change this year. We have a lot of experience and depth on that side of the ball. Our offense hasn't had a true test yet. We are a little short on experience on the offensive line. Once again, we have some good athletes on offense for the FCS level. How that translates to a game against a good FBS program is the real question. My experience has been that we can often stay with a team like yours for a quarter or two, but your depth and superior athletes will wear us down and make the second half a little less interesting. Every once in a while a FCS team will sneak out a win against a FBS team. It's just not likely. :coffee:

Oldrunner - Thanks for your thoughts on our game. Yes, we have had trouble in the past with FCS teams, most recently our pass defense. If you use our defensive statistics the last few years, your Wildcats may find some holes, and some success! Our new defensive coordinator has shaken things up a bit, so we may show some improvement. Our running game vs UNC was not all that positive, which could be either us, or UNC - I am curious to see how they do this Saturday! Our Bay Area Bears can help your fans if you need any help navigating the area and/or the game itself! Will you be able to watch the game? We are being televised by the Pac 10 Network which has been challenging for some who do not line up with the right cable company. Are you able to view or stream the game?

Welcome to the board 72calbear!

Though I would love a Weber State win, I don't see us having much of a chance, Im worried about our Offensive line against the bigger, stronger Cal Defense. Our O-line didn't necessarily dominate UM Western as most of our rushing yards came from bouncing it outside where our speed took over and was too much for UM Western. We did have good pass protection however, Cantwell only got sacked once and when the protection did break down he made good decisions with the ball and choose when he needed to run or throw the ball away.

I do think our defense will play well for at least half the game, but our offense will at least have to sustain some drives to keep the defense off the field. I don't see us scoring many points but if we can hold Cal to a few less touchdowns it will help our offense out.

Cal will be stoked after their huge win last week and the stadium will be rocking. It'll be interesting to see how Weber handles it. Cal may be the best FBS team we have played since Arizona State in 2014.

Yes this team did look very good against UM Western, but now comes the real test. The Best team we will play all year. Maybe it was good to play a game at home first, to help us work out the kinks of a first game and maybe we can go into Cal and put in a good showing.

I have Cal winning easily as they pull away in the second half. 45-17

I don't get the Pac 12 network so I wont be able to watch it, but I also may be hunting this weekend so I wouldn't be able to watch it anyway.

GO WILDCATS

I don't get the PAC12 network either. If I want to watch it will be at my local sports bar. There will be a hand full of fans show up for the game, I'm sure. Just how many alumni are in the Bay area, I couldn't tell you. However, our alumni association usually reaches out to them and has some sort of a reception and ticket deal. That happened when I have traveled for some games in the past. I would love to travel for this game, but it just isn't in the budget for this one.

One thing I can tell you about our team, they won't lay down for anyone. We may not have a great chance at a win but they are going to play 60 minutes of football. They know all about the depth and matchup problems. That isn't going to stop them from laying it all out on the turf. We will play hard.

Welcome to the Weber State fans forum 72Calbear! Hell of a win last Saturday over UNC. I was cheering for the Golden Bears in that one and I will throughout the season. Except, of course, next Saturday. No matter, I am hoping for a clean, injury free, and competitive game next week.

As for Weber State, we really don't know what we have. However, whenever you beat a team 76-0, no matter how bad the competition, you know you have a good team. Are we as good as a PAC-12 team? I'm not going to say yes, but I think we are a good FCS team. Regardless, winning on Saturday would be a Herculaneum accomplishment for the Cats. We know your OC really well and understand his game planning. Cal fans are going to have a lot of fun watching his offense. He is an offensive genius!

As for fans in the bay area. Sir.Velo, the fan formerly known as catcat, could attend the game, probably won't, but could. He has been to past functions sponsored by WSU Alumni and says there is a really strong and large alumni group in the bay area. I have a feeling that a decent contingent of Wildcat fans will be in Berkeley on Saturday. Wish I could be one, but I will hopefully be watching it on TV.

WILDCATS OPEN SEASON WITH 76-0 WIN OVER MONTANA WESTERN
Weber State started the season with a win for the first time in four years as the Wildcats rolled to a 76-0 route of Montana Western Saturday night at Stewart Stadium. WSU had 485 yards of total offense, scored 10 touchdowns and forced five turnovers against Montana Western, an NAIA school out of Dillon, Montana.
The Wildcats had eight rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns in the win. WSU also had four interceptions and forced one fumble.

MANY RECORDS SET IN SEASON-OPENING WIN
The Wildcats set a new Weber State school record with 76 points in the win Saturday, breaking the old record of 74 points set in 1965. The 76 points was the second most points scored in a game in all of Division I last week.
The win is also the largest margin of victory in school history and was the first shutout for Weber State in 10 seasons.

JORDAN PREATOR WITH TWO INTERCEPTIONS IN OPENER
Several players contributed and saw significant playing time in Saturday's win. On defense, junior Jordan Preator led the way with two interceptions and one sack. Both interceptions came in the first half and both led to WSU touchdowns. He returned the first interception 16 yards and the second pick 21 yards. He also had three tackles, including a sack for a seven-yard loss. He was one of just four players in the nation with two interceptions in the week one games.
Keilan Benjamin and Breckin Gunter also each had interceptions.

OFFENSE SHINES
The Wildcats scored on its first nine possessions with seven of them coming as touchdowns. WSU was also a perfect 9-of-9 in the red zone with seven touchdowns in the game, and had 23 first downs and was 12-of-16 on third down conversions.

On the ground the Wildcats had eight rushing touchdowns by seven different players. Sophomore Kevin Smith had two touchdown runs in the second quarter and finished with 61 yards. Freshman David Jones led the way with 86 yards and a touchdown. WSU also had rushing touchdowns by Treshawn Garrett, Stefan Cantwell, Rashid Shaheed, Brady May and Clay Moss.
Freshman kicker Trey Tuttle, in his first career game, was a perfect 10-of-10 on extra point attempts and was 2-of-2 on field goals, connecting on a 26-yard and 30-yard field goals.

WILDCATS MOVE UP IN NATIONAL POLLS
After the season-opening win, the Wildcats have moved up in the national polls. WSU is now ranked 20th in the FCS Coaches poll and 25th in the STATS FCS poll.

A LOOK BACK AT 2016
Weber State is coming off a 7-5 record in 2016 in which the Wildcats finished third in the Big Sky at 6-2. WSU was also selected to the FCS Playoffs for the first time in seven years, where the 'Cats fell at No. 9 Chattanooga in the first round. The Wildcats had 13 players earn Big Sky All-Conference honors.

WEBER STATE PICKED FIFTH IN BIG SKY PRESEASON POLLS
This year Weber State was selected to finish fifth in the Big Sky preseason media and coaches polls. North Dakota was picked to finish first in both polls, followed by Eastern Washington, Northern Arizona and Cal Poly. The Wildcats were fifth with Montana sixth and Southern Utah seventh.

THREE WILDCATS EARN PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA HONORS
Three Wildcats received preseason honors and were named to the STATS FCS Al-America Preseason team. Senior tight end Andrew Vollert was named to the Second Team, while senior punter Jacob DeMaio and senior cornerback Taron Johnson were named to the Third Team. Vollert earned Third Team All-America honors last season.
All three players were also named to the Big Sky Preseason All-Conference list, in addition to junior linebacker Landon Stice

COACHING STAFF
Jay Hill returns for his fourth season at the helm of the Wildcats. He has led WSU to a 16-20 overall record and a 13-11 record in Big Sky play. Hill will also serve as defensive coordinator for the Wildcats this season.
Fesi Sitake is in his fourth year at Weber State and his second season as offensive coordinator for the Wildcats.
Associate head coach Brent Myers returns for his fourth season at Weber State. Also returning are assistant coaches Kite Afeaki (defensive line), Kelly Bills (wide receivers), Quinton Ganther (running backs), Preston Hadley (secondary) and Colton Swan (special teams, outside linebackers). New assistant coaches this year are Grant Duff (inside linebackers) and former Wildcat All-American Al Pupunu (tight ends). Ryan Milus (cornerbacks) and Skyler Ridley (offense) are graduate assistants and Derrick Luken is the Director of Football Operations.

TEAM CAPTAINS
Coach Hill has named five captains for the Wildcats for this season, two on offense and three on defense. The two offensive captains are senior quarterback Stefan Cantwell and senior tight end Andrew Vollert. The three defensive captains are senior cornerback Taron Johnson, senior defensive tackle McKay Murphy and junior linebacker LeGrand Toia.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA
The California Golden Bears are also 1-0 after opening the season with a 35-30 win at North Carolina last Saturday. The Bears trailed 24-21 entering the fourth quarter but scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to seal the win. Cal had 469 yards of total offense in the game, with 363 coming in the passing game. Sophomore quarterback Ross Bowers, in his first career start, was 24-of-38 passing for 363 yards and four touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Vic Wharton III had five catches for 156 yards and a touchdown. Senior Devante Downs led the defense with 13 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble. For his performance, Downs was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week.
Cal is coming off a 5-7 overall record last season and finished 3-6 in Pac-12 play, tied for fourth in the north division. The Bears were picked to finish sixth in the Pac-12 north division in the preseason media poll.
Cal has 15 starters returning off last year's squad. The Bears also have 11 players named to preseason watch lists.

HEAD COACH JUSTIN WILCOX
The Bears are coached by first-year head coach Justin Wilcox who took over at Cal last December, replacing Jeff Tedford. Wilcox, a native of Junction City, Oregon, came to Cal after leading some of the top defenses in the country as an FBS defensive coordinator for the last 11 seasons.
He played football at Oregon, helping the Ducks to three bowl games. He started his coaching career at Boise State, then spent three seasons as linebackers coach at Cal. He then returned to Boise State where he spent four seasons as defensive coordinator, before working as coordinator at Tennessee, Washington, USC and Wisconsin.
The new offensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the Bears is someone very familiar with Weber State. Beau Baldwin is in his first season at Cal after spending the last nine years as the head coach at Eastern Washington in the Big Sky. He led the Eagles to the 2010 FCS national title and five Big Sky titles.

SERIES HISTORY
This is the first-ever meeting between Weber State and California. It marks the fourth time in the last four years the Wildcats have played a team from the Pac-12 Conference. Weber State lost at Utah in 2013, at Arizona State in 2014 and at Oregon State in 2015.
The Wildcats are 0-5 all-time against teams in a Power 5 conference. Weber State's last win over an FBS team came in 1993, when the Wildcats beat Nevada 47-30 in Reno.

CALIFORNIA CONNECTIONS
Weber State has 22 players on this year's roster from the state of California. In addition, 12 players hail from northern California with nine come from the Bay Area. Wildcat assistant coach Quinton Ganther is a native of Fairfield, California. He played at Fairfield High School and the University of Utah before a six-year career in the NFL.

LOOKING AHEAD
After Saturday's game, the Wildcats will be right back in northern California as they head to Sacramento State to take on the Hornets next Saturday. The game will be a non-conference game and will not count in the Big Sky standings.

LeGrand Toia did not play last week. Injured? Weber isn't giving any injury reports. Anyone know if Landon Stice or Arnold Lopez plan to play this week? Lopez is from San Jose so I'm sure he'd love to play if possible.

Gotta be able to contain Cal's Beau Baldwin passing attack. 363 yards through the air last week. Should help that Weber is very familiar with Baldwin.

No surprise, but not too much talk about this game yet but I did find a couple comments.

From our friend 72CalBear:

"Somebody else can do the research, but Weber State has got a very good program going this season with some veteran players returning. Need I mention problems we have had in the past with programs like this (Sac State, Portland State, UCD, etc) and how the Bears will simply need to focus and practice like it's USC coming in next week. Go Bears!"

And from FuzzyWuzzy:

"Weber State ended up winning 76-0 today.

I knew nothing about Weber State so I did some cursory research and will share it here. WSU is a public school located in Ogden, Utah, about 40 miles north of Salt Lake City. They are in the Big Sky Conference with E. Wash, UC Davis, Sac State, Cal Poly, etc. They are picked to finish fifth in league out of 12 schools this year. The kettle-style charcoal grill was invented by the school's namesake, Charles C. Weber, thus the nickname "BBQ State."*

Many P12 schools played Big Sky schools this week. The top tier P12 schools generally had no problem. But Oregon State needed some missed extra points and missed field goals to squeak by Portland State, which is picked to finish 8th in conference. So, yeah, a Big Sky opponent can bite you in the ass if you don't bring it.

* Just kidding."

Gotta get pressure on their quarterback to force him to make bad throws. We cannot allow him to sit in the pocket and pick us apart.

Offensively we need to make sure Cantwell is protected and not running for his life, winning the turnover battle is huge as well.

Here's hoping Cal is overlooking us, but I'm sure Baldwin is preaching to his kids to know better.

With 22 players on our roster from California, there should be some good support in Cal wearing purple.

We are all very proud of Charles C. Weber. He was the father of enlightenment who also invented basketball shoes.

Was it after the Colorado State debacle or the Wyoming Part II Crap Fest? You had to sit next to bangelhater for a lot of hours that day (CSU) Thank goodness we got free grub for the WCC.

I thought Charles invented the tampon and his brother Rastus discovered the Weber river, the river that WSU is named after. Their sister, Shemiqua, had the county named after her. It's all in the alt history books.

I really haven't had a chance to look into this game very deeply, but I'll try to put down some opinions now. Granted, we can't look into Preseason polls that much, and we both have only played 1 game (Weber's was a glorified scrimmage that made us feel good). However, based off of polls Cal was ranked last in the PAC-12 and Weber a workmanlike #5. What does that mean? Nothing...it still means that Cal should beat an FCS Big Sky school. They have far more resources, scholarships, and talent than what a Big Sky School should have. If we were talking about the Sun Belt, MAC, CUSA, or even the MW, yes, we could be talking about a Weber upset or even an outright Weber win. There isn't that much separating the Big Sky from the GO5. But, Cal is a PAC-12 School that should beat FCS programs.

AS for the game each team has played. What does that tell us? For Weber, absolutely nothing. FOr Cal, a lot. They beat UNC on the road. To me, a major win for Cal. I'm going to trash UNC now, but no matter, still a major win for Cal. UNC is a team that is in the middle of a rebuild. To some, ranked waaaay too high (of course, I was talking to Duke fans about UNC preseason ranking) and being given too much credit. My buddy, the unofficial expert of ACC football, said that UNC will be lucky to win 2 games this season. Offensively UNC is a shell of what they once were and defensively, they are just plain bad. UNC's best way of winning games is to out score opponents.

Now Weber...well, we know we beat a team 76-0 who beat the College of Idaho the week before 16-14. So, we don't know much. :) Regardless, last time we beat Western Montana, we ended up being Co-Champs of the Big Sky (2008) and played two FBS teams tough (Utah, who went 13-0 and beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, and Hawaii who had played in a BCS Bowl game the season before). But this is 2017, a whole new year. For Weber to be competitive (not like last years flub against USU) they have to play their absolute best. No Turnovers, limit penalties, and sustain drives. Yes, our defense is our best asset, but not if they are constantly on the field. Weber has to grow up fast on the offensive line and give Cantwell plenty of protection. If Weber does these things, I think the Cats will compete and give the Bears a scare. If not, we get USU 2016 all over again.

Can Weber win...YES, of course. That is why we play the game
