Cal Poly @ PSU

I'm already pumped for this game. We haven't been 3-1 since 2006 (yeah, I know that two of the wins are versus lower division teams).

I think this should be a great game and I am excited that it will be on Root TV.

PSU's offense is impressive. I think it is fortunate for Cal Poly that they had a bye this week to try to figure a way to slow it down. I know we will not stop it, but I am hoping we can at least slow it down. It also helps the Mustangs that PSU has a short week to prepare for Cal Poly's triple/spread option attack.

Wow. The scheduling really stinks for PSU. Cal Poly will have had all this time to prep and little time for PSU. Ugh! Walsh will be ready to go.

At the risk of over stating the importance of a single game, I believe this is the most important game the Vikings have played in the Burton era. The team has gotten off to a good start, beating the teams it should have soundly, and lost a close one to a higher division team. This is a 50/50 game. It could go either way, as such, we will see where this program is headed. Can Burton get this team ready to play the first half? Will the team start sluggish and lose too much ground to come back? All indications are that PSU has some talented players, are they going to step up? If PSU wants to be a factor in the playoff run, this game counts plenty.

The Weber State game in 2011 was pretty big for Burton, as we probably would have been playoff bound at 8-3 if we'd won that game.

I do agree that this is a very, very important game for Burton as head coach here at PSU.

I knew that the issue of the possible playoff run a couple of years ago would come up. Not to discount that season, because it was a lot of fun, and that was a good team, but that wasn't Burton's team.

Most of the key players on this team are a product of Burton's vision as a recruiter. This is his team. In my mind this Thursday will be a turning point or another step back.

I have to disagree that the Viks would have made the playoffs with an 8-3 record that year, only 6 of those wins would have been against D-I teams and no team has ever made the playoffs w/o 7 D-I wins. Also the playoff field was only 16 that year vs. 20 last year and 24 this year, and I think they may have had only 1 top 25 win amongst those six.

Regardless, this is a huge game. It going to be tough to get a win @ Montana the following week, they've looked excellent so far, but with a win here makes that less critical.

The team hasn't been this fun to watch in a while, and hopefully we take care of business Thursday!

Vikings look to build on good start

VIKINGS REV UP FOR CONFERENCE

• Portland State's football team goes into the Big Sky Conference season on a high — having stomped UC Davis 41-10 Saturday in a nonconference road game.

The Vikings (3-1) will play host to nationally ranked Cal Poly at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Jeld-Wen Stadium.

The Mustangs, coached by former PSU coach Tim Walsh, are 1-2 and coming off a bye week. They were ranked 18th and 19th in the polls last week.

Portland State rolled up 427 rushing yards (11.2 per play) at Cal Davis. The school single-game record of 437 was set last year against Idaho State.

Cal Poly opened with a 38-16 home victory over San Diego, then lost on the road to FBS Mountain West Conference opponents Fresno State 41-25 and Colorado State 34-17.

Portland is looking for its first start of better than 3-2 since 2000, when the Vikings got to 6-0 en route to an 8-3 regular season and NCAA Division I-AA playoff berth under Walsh.

• Big Sky leaders from PSU:

-- Running back DJ Adams, with 122.8 rushing yards per game (12th in the nation) and touchdowns (seven). Adams had 14 carries for 208 yards and two TDs last week.

-- The PSU ground game (328.0 yards per game, also tops in FCS).

-- The PSU offense (612.0 yards per game, second in the nation).

-- Kyle Loomis, punter, 46.8-yard average (second in the nation).

-- Kasey Closs, second in receiving yards (123.2 per game, fourth in the nation). Closs is averaging 24.6 yards per catch and has scored five touchdowns.

-- The PSU defense, first in sacks with 17 and first in tackles for loss (10.8 per game, which also is second in the nation)

-- Defensive end Jeremy Boone, who is tied for the conference lead with two fumble recoveries.

-- PSU receivers, who lead the nation in yards per catch (19.9).

Not sure how this game will go. We seem to control the rushing game well, but are still about average in covering the pass. How's our backfield going to do against a team that uses the option and seems to be passing more this year? CP's defense is supposed to be good, but can they really stop our very effective offense? DJ, Shaq, Closs et al? My real questions are, will KM pull an early funk the way he did with Davis? And will we put up 100 yards of penalties? We seem to have cleared up the fumbling.
It should be a high scoring game. I'll stick my neck out and say PSU 42 Cal Poly 33.

Looking at the release notes from this week the following guys that had been at least somewhat in the rotation missed the game last week:

Cam Keizer, Caleb Worthington, Roston Tatum, Darnell Adams, Talalemotu, Tobias, and Cutter Baldock

I'm guessing that Worthington (the transfer from E. Washington) may have a serious injury because he had moved up to 2nd on the depth chart at LG the week, but is not listed at all now. Also Tobias moved down from 2nd to 3rd at strong side linebacker and is now listed behind Kawika Stant who played for the first time last week, it seems like he's not adjusting to the move to LB as quickly as hoped. Darnell Adams May be done for a while, he's not on the depth chart any more and Milhollin, who I think is taking a medical red-shirt this year, had taken his spot at the #3 Z-WR.

Edgerson was back last week and Nall still hasn't played, so it looks like he is red-shirting unless he's gets into a game in the next couple of weeks. Overall this isn't bad at all given the nature of injuries in football (although we lost Walen for the year, who probably would've been one our best players). Hopefully we can get Tatum back for this week, but given that he 'a already missed two games I'm not counting on it.

Just curious, what do Viking fans think of Walsh? As a Mustang fan I am a big fan. I have talked with Tim many times and he always has good things to say about Portland State. He is also very complimentary of Burton. He said in his press conference this week the Vikings are a top 3 or 4 team in the Big Sky this year and he expects them to be competing for Big Sky championships year in and year out under Burton.

Most longtime fans of PSU have high regard for Coach Walsh. From limited personal experience, but in speaking with other alum and boosters, he was always approachable. He was at PSU for a very long time, but just never seemed to be able to get PSU over the hump either record wise or attendance wise. The only real criticism I might have is that his personality may have been a little to low key and bland for the Portland market. Unfortunately, PSU is a tough sell, and has gotten tougher with the success of the programs further south. For PSU to be successful, the coach has to be a bigger personality, winning games won't be enough (ala Pokey Allen)

They are making a big push to put rear ends in the seats for Thursday's game when Walsh comes to town. PSU definitely wants to make a good showing, not out of spite but I really think out of respect and admiration.

Walsh is very well thought of in Portland. Like they say, he never got PSU over the hump. He was almost there with the Jimmy Blanchard/Chip Dunn team but wasn't able to continue that momentum.

I agree that a coach with telegenic personality would be helpful. But I disagree that a winning team alone wouldn't be enough. If PSU had Mr. Rogers as coach and had the success of a North Dakota State winning National Championships, attendance would not be a problem.

Lot's of former Vikings on the Cal Poly staff.

I didn't realize that Saga Tuitele had been promoted to OC.

I agree with GreenGiant in that Walsh just wasn't able to get us over the hump. Close, but no cigar.

Otherwise, Walsh is a great guy. He used to speak at my dad's Rotary group once a year. Always brought a couple of student athletes as well, and knew all about what their majors were, and what their GPA was. Other than when he faces us, I wish him all the best and hope he has success on the field.

Great game that could have gone either way. Your offense is scary with the one - two punch of Adams pounding the ball and Dean in the passing game. Dean looks unstoppable in the passing game. PSU is going to win a lot of games this year and is not a team I would want to see again in the playoffs. Best of luck the rest of the season.

Who's the conditioning coach?

You're going to heap blame on the defensive backfield for this, and it's not like they don't earn that...

...but cramps? Cramps last night?

The defensive discipline breakdowns, the types of injuries taking place, and where most of the team (NOT just the defense) was in the second half looked awfully systemic last night. Conditioning looked like an issue.

The sad part is that this isn't something that gets fixed in a week.

Cal Poly's RB Kristaan Ivory left the game for a while with cramps so it was not just PSU.
