You're going to heap blame on the defensive backfield for this, and it's not like they don't earn that...
...but cramps? Cramps last night?
The defensive discipline breakdowns, the types of injuries taking place, and where most of the team (NOT just the defense) was in the second half looked awfully systemic last night. Conditioning looked like an issue.
The sad part is that this isn't something that gets fixed in a week.
I don't think conditioning per say is the issue. Did they run out of steam in the fourth? Absolutely. The safeties weren't getting to the edges as fast and the DL wasn't pushing through into the backfield as much. But we at least need to consider three very important factors.
1) The Viks had two less days of rest and recovery from the road game against UC Davis than they normally would have been afforded.
2) The Mustangs had two weeks to prepare for this contest.
3) Cal Poly's option/veer run offense is why they are a nationally ranked program. They have the horses (pun intended) to run you to death if you're not at full capacity.
With all that said, I still believe we were a few penalties away from grabbing this one.
