Cal Poly scouting

Hello. I'm a fan of Sam Houston, and we play Cal Poly in the playoffs. I am impressed that you guys knocked off Cal Poly this season. In fact, it looks you gave EWU and Montana State everything they could handle as well. Clearly (to me) the Big Sky playoff teams had tough battles when they faced Sacramento State.

I enjoyed SDHornet's writeup on Cal Poly in the thread http://hornets.bigskyfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1788" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

Now, in retrospect, would you mind sharing your thoughts about how you beat Cal Poly and how you might approach the game similarly or differently if you had to face them again? I see they are an awesome running team. I presume they have a top offensive line. But as an average fan, I'd love to know what to watch for on game day.

Take care,
KatFan

The way to beat Cal Poly and the triple option is assignment football on defense. As long as the defensive guys wait an extra .5 second to see who has the ball and not bite on the fake, they will be fine. CP's pass defense is atrocious. Pound the rock when you can, but their DB's were torched against us.

Good luck but I will be rooting for CP since they are a fellow CSU/Big Sky member.

Welcome and good luck KatFan. Unfortunately for you guys I too will be cheering for fellow BSC and CA rival CP. Defensive discipline is what will slow them down. They will still move the ball no matter what but the trick is to limit the big plays and make them earn every inch. As SHA has said, their weakness is the defensive secondary and their front 7 has solid pursuit and tackles well.

Good luck to both teams, this looks to be a good matchup.

Thank you Gentlemen,

Yes, you should root for your conference. Looking at Cal Poly, their running stats are truly impressive. But what also jumps out to me is they are #1 in the nation in 3rd down conversions. I think we will have our hands full.

It looks to me like you guys might have only been a couple plays from the playoffs yourself. You guys knocked off Cal Poly. Then, to only lose by 3 points to Montana State & Eastern Washington looks like you might have been 2 or 3 plays from sweeping those opponents.
