Cal Poly v. Weber State

This game should be a good measuring stick for the offense and the defense.

Cal Poly's QB had a good opening game. Weber showed what looked like another very good defense against SDSU. However, SDSU was largely unimpressive on offense.

Conversely, Weber really struggled on offense against a pretty good defense. Cal Poly looks very average on defense.

Cal Poly’s offense was hitting on on cylinders. They were up 52-15 when they subbed in their 2nd and 3rd team Offense and Defensive players. I think they needed to get those players experience. From what I’ve seen, their Starting D is Cal Poly’s strength. The Redshirt QB is the real deal. He reminds of Jonathan Daily who their record setting qb a few years back.
I look forward to the matchup - it should be a great measuring stick for both teams- I also believe it’s a non conference game for both teams.

SDSU had a really good defense last year, and Rocky Long always has them playing a tough defense, but the offense is lame for Weber State.

This will be a better indicator of where Weber State is at. If they lose this game, it could be a very long year, and that is no disrespect to Cal Poly, but the Wildcats have a tougher schedule this year and very well could end up under .500 should they drop this game as Nevada, UNI, Montana, and UC Davis are tough games. The Big Sky is a dog fight every week, so any other team could win, too.

As much as I love seeing the defense and Hill’s great strategy with it, it is painful seeing the pathetic offensive scheme and terrible play calling.

A defense will stack the line if the coach never makes them respect the pass over 5 yards forward. If you need to pass to open up the run, do it! Weber tried for one drive vs Maine on the first drive and marched down the field. Then, they refused to keep playing to how Maine was defending. EWU passed like crazy until Maine dropped back and then EWU had success running.

The manual on how to beat Weber State is out there. Don’t turn over the ball and don’t let the special teams have a chance at a return. Make Weber’s offense beat you. Even if a team is overmatched, they will be in the ballgame the entire game as Weber relies on a big play with several short series of possession otherwise.

I think Hill might need to start calling the offense too, or get another coach ready to take over for the season. If the ship isn’t turning by now...it never will.

I presume you are a Cal Poly fan?

Honestly, I have never heard of Jonathan Daily, but Cal Poly played a good game last week. However, I suspect USD does not have nearly as good a defense as Weber and this will be a much better test.

Not buying that Cal Poly's D is their strength. USD had 535 yds last week converted 10 of 16 3rd downs and won time of possession. I did not watch the game, but I presume the 3 turnovers and the Cal Poly running attack won the game.

No offense to Cal Poly, That was a nice win. However, I don't think they will end up in the top half of the league this year.

Agreed on two things. The play calling has been abysmal and this will be a better indicator of any progress the offense has made.

Last week and against Maine it was too conservative. Probably in an effort to not turn the ball over against good defenses. But at some point we have to stretch the field. We actually came out throwing it ok and then went conservative and the run game was non existent. Shaheed had a long reception where he out jumped the defender and then we had a poorly thrown ball on the same series that could have been a long gain. Constantine did not lead guys with his passes very well. Lots of short passes for minimal gains. We did have the one trick play which should have been successful, but it was a horrible pass and the receiver could not come back to the ball.

Hopefully, we see Jake Constantine play like he did against SEMO last year.

Actually pretty sure that was Cooley making that catch.

Although I have not been a fan of the play calling, maybe it's been conservative because we don't appear to have a QB who can consistently throw good balls. Almost every throw downfield from Constantine was a poorly thrown ball. Most were thrown short or lofted, including the ball that was intercepted.

You are correct it was Cooley. I too believe Weber is conservative because Constantine has been turn over prone and doesn't throw a good deep ball consistently.

I don’t want to sound like a certain type of fan that is always whining for a backup QB to come in at the first disappointing series, but Constantine is a seasoned QB. If he can’t throw a mid to long pass well, does Weber State move on and build for the future?

I’m not a pass happy fan either. If you can run the ball well, by all means do it. If they stack the line, you have to keep them honest. If he can’t pass, should they run a triple option or Air Force style? Anything to limit the many 3 and outs.

The defense and special teams need a little help from the offense.

Should be fun to see football at Stewart Stadium again!

I dunno, I went back and watched and I thought Constantine battled. It was clear the game plan was designed around quick throws. I don’t think we trusted the o-line to pick up their pressures. I didn’t really see many plays where he had open receivers. It was the same deal as last season where most of our pass plays came out on the spread and the receivers were being asked to win 1v1 with little time to develop their routes. Maybe 3 plays utilized a rollout or a stacked release. It looked identical to our game vs Maine. Our receivers aren’t creating separation immediately, especially when the play-action is ineffective.

Constantine made a few bad throws but I thought he looked poised and in control of the offense. There just wasn’t much for him to work with.

I did see Downs was suited up and holding his helmet in the 3rd Q so who knows what happened there.

I think we will see a Weber team with a little fire in their belly tomorrow. They know they had a winnable game in San Diego and just didn't put up points. Constantine needs to put up 200+ yards and the running backs need to get explosive gains. Defense just needs to be assignment sound against the option.

Weber 30 - Cal Poly 17

I think Weber State offense plays better and moves ball but still struggles to score. Defense and special teams account for 14 points.

Weber State 26 Cal Poly 13

Downs suited up but not starting again. No idea what’s going on there.

The false starts are out of control...

Hopefully Jake is okay, I don’t think we’d go very far without him.

The hit looked innocent enough, didn’t look like his knee got twisted. Hoping for the best.

Downs played in the backfield as an extra blocker on the series that ended with the fumbled punt attempt.

I thought Jenks looked pretty good other than two bad throws.

Hill said the one was the WR not running his route. Also thought Jenks played well. If he's our QB for awhile we'll be alright.

Solid win. Defense gave up a few big plays but shut down the triple option...which is tough to do. Offense looked better and responded when it got close.

Maybe Nevada is a chance at an upset FBS win. UNI looks tough. Two big games coming up!
