Cal Poly v. Weber State

I didn't expect 41 points from the offense. I thought Jenks looked decent, it seems like for whatever reason the passing game is more effective with him on the field. He throws with more velocity and maybe arguably is more accurate. I was not a fan of him giving up his body on that scamper to the 1 yard line. Josh Davis and an o-lineman went out dinged up too, any word on them?

I'm a little worried about how weak the D was on the edges, at least with this option offense. I hope they can get the job done @Nevada and vs UNI

I agree that Jenks looked more confident and the offense looked more dangerous with him in there.

Davis and Tapusoa both came back a few plays later. Davis looked like he had the wind knocked out of him. Not sure what happened to Tapusoa.

Solid win. Defense gave up a few big plays but shut down the triple option...which is tough to do. Offense looked better and responded when it got close.

Maybe Nevada is a chance at an upset FBS win. UNI looks tough. Two big games coming up!
We score 41 points and, clearly, we still have a lot to clean up on both sides of the ball.

I'm confident that this coaching staff will keep these guys improving throughout the season. The best is yet to come.

Have you all noticed that nobody wants to kick to any of our return guys? I really don't blame them. I wouldn't do it. :coffee:

It’s definitely encouraging and a step in the right direction. I think the mid-range passes helped keep Cal Poly honest. If you need to pass first to open up the running game or even pass until they finally drop off the line, I will be fine...even with losses if execution isn’t there.. I just don’t like the establish the run no matter what philosophy and run into a wall all game. Play calling did improve.

Next two weeks will be a good indicator. SDSU held UCLA to 14 at Rose Bowl, so they have even a stronger defense than I thought. Cal Poly might not be too strong defensively, so I don’t want to get too excited.

As for our special teams...I wouldn’t kick to our returners either. I still think Weber State got hosed last week on a very questionable call on the TD return. They definitely can put 6 points on the board in a hurry. No team wants to play with that fire.

I hope Constantine is okay, but I think Jenks fits into the scheme better...and he looked good coming off the bench after the near disaster pass. Weber State should be fine with either QB.

Anyone know who is 3rd in case of injuries?

Excited for next week. Go Wildcats!

Solid win against the triple option. I always hate facing that.

Offense - B plus
We absolutely owned the line of scrimmage. 2 100 yard rushers both with insanely high rushing averages. QB play was better. Not enough deeper passes, but the routes look better and the throws were mostly on target. We still struggle to run when we are pinned against our own end zone, but most teams do. Most importantly we had good ball security. Cal Poly should have picked off the one missed connection by Jenks and his receiver. Play calling was improved dramatically. I dislike the called QB runs with Constantine in at QB. I realize he got hurt on a scramble, but he is not a running QB like Cantwell was. Hope Constantine is ok, but I have lots of confidence in Jenks as well. Key stats 11 of 18 on 3rd down conversions and 5 for 5 in the red zone.

Defense - B plus
Defending this offense is difficult. But we stopped almost every run between the tackles and only missed on couple outside runs. Front 7 were dominant all game long regardless of who was subbed in. Defensive backs were vulnerable. The option offense puts alot of pressure on them by design. Hard to be on an island and also responsible for run support. However, we played very soft against the pass and took poor routes to the ball several times which resulted in a extra yards. We also need to be better at turning and looking for the ball.

Special Teams - B minus
Not a lot of positives or negatives here. Tuttle was reliable as usual. Also as usual we only had one chance at a return which was nullified by a questionable call behind the play and a no call on a hit out of bounds. The bad snap in the end zone was made worse by a poor decision to try and not take the safety. This really hurt since we had just made a fourth and goal stop minutes earlier. Punting was solid otherwise. The muffed punt was a nice gift from Cal Poly.

Injuries
Looked like Constantine was the only significant injury. Davis went down for a couple plays as did Tapusoa. Both returned to the game. Shaheed looked like he injured his hand at one point but stayed in the game. I believe Burke went out with a stinger in the first half but was back a series later. Downs did not start but did play as an extra blocker when we were pinned deep. All others who missed the first game were back in the lineup.

Penalties
7 penalties for 55 yds. Still too many false starts. Seems like we are trying to draw the defense off with a hard count, but it only results in us jumping or looking out of sync. The early pass interference was declined and the facemask on the QB sack was blatant but otherwise it was a pretty clean game by the defense.

Downs suited up but not starting again. No idea what’s going on there.

The false starts are out of control...

Downs played in the backfield as an extra blocker on the series that ended with the fumbled punt attempt.

Brett Hein reports that Downs has an ongoing knee injury.
