This should have been a bigger win than than the close game that we ended up with.

Hey Geving. Tell your squad to get a freaking body on somebody in the paint to get some boards.

Fundamentals.

This will kill us if we don't correct it. I'm not asking to out-rebound teams. I'm asking for fundamental basketball. Yes, we will be undersized in many games this year. However, that's not an excuse for bad basketball.

Yeah, the missed block outs were pretty frustrating to watch... but after this football season, it sure felt nice to see a VIKING VICTORY!!!!

Let me remind you that this is a new team. Chances are it'll take all of the pre-conference season to get them playing together, knowing each other's idiosyncracies, automatically adjusting to each other. You've got two freshmen out there playing pretty long minutes, a couple of transfers. Add, these are students not professionals, with classes to pass; they can't practice and think basketball 24 hours a day. Let's keep the expectations reasonable. Against Cal Poly we played a pretty good game, all things considered. Look at the stats; shooting was excellent, threes were fine, free throws - we need work there. Blocking was poor, getting to the boards terrible, defense was tentative, not to say lackadaisical. They should watch the women's team; talk about scrambling! And assists - this is very weak. This is still a team of individuals. No one has emerged yet to pull the team together, feeding assists. Lots to work on. Geving's probably frustrated, but he's got to be patient. It takes time. The coaches thought we'd be around fourth in conference. I still think we'll be better than that. Check back again in a couple weeks.

Some good observations, but I think Waters might have shown last night he is the leader and "go to guy" on this team. He was very calm down the stretch and lead the Viks to victory. Someone needs to light a fire under Nelson who is extremely talented, but too lackadaisical. A victory over Stanford would be huge for this team.

Portland State 92, Cal Poly 83: Waters scores 32 in home opener as Vikings men earn first victory

A victory over Stanford? I think last year's squad was equal to the task, but this team doesn't seem to have anywhere near the strength needed inside to compete with a Pac 10 team. Then again, if Waters has another big game, and they can get more than 10-15 points apiece from Nelson and the Jones boys, a different story may emerge. If anyone's gonna feast on Stanford, this is probably the last year to do it.
