i just read on the poly site that they have a whole new coaching staff and 7 new players on offense. do we know anything about their talent, and are they switching up their offensive strategy with this new coaching staff, or going with what has worked for the past few years?

also i read they've switched up their defensive alignment from a 3-4 to a 4-3. don't know if we can exploit this change since they've got 8 returning starters on defense...

i listened to the unlv game which was frustrating, and read the recent posts. if i had attended, i am sure i would have been one of those fans yelling at our coaches to open up the play book and mix it up. it seems that we did establish the run, but need to develop the other half of the offense to complement it.
regardless if the unlv was was meaningless, a warmup, a don'tshowthemwhatwehave game, the season is here and NOW. as they say, "make hay when the sun shines."

would love to hear what the board has to say about this game. we are 15-15 in the series, so this is the tiebreaker!

heard Carlo Trinchero is back, but is on double secret probation. won't play at Poly, but will be available for play for EWU.
 
I recall reading somewhere that the new coach is going to stick with the triple option style of offense. I have no idea who they have filling the voids left by their graduated players. I do know that they landed a UCLA transfer at WR.

Not sure why they are making the move from a 3-4 to a 4-3. Maybe they have more depth at DL than LB. But either way I think Sac State holds the advantage in the trenches on both sides of the ball. And as I said before, if the DL plays like they did in Vegas, they will give cal poly some fits this Saturday.

I think this is a game we win on our home turf, but I'm afraid that we'll still be working out some of the offensive kinks on the road. Dailey goes for 100+, Smith throws a TD and a pick, Wilkins busts a run of 20+ yards, but also fumbles.

i'm thinking that the 'stangs will be rusty and hesitant, especially with the coaching changes and new players on offense. and the hornets just plain pissed off and wanting to establish their identity. plus hopefully the playbook will be opened up.

Cal Poly is sticking with the triple option, but with a few new twist. Cal Poly lost a lot of talent on the offensive side (Dally, Mole, Noble, Barden and Tolver), but they also have some good young players ready to step up. They do return three RB that rushed for about 350 yards each and averaged from 6 to 8 yards a carry and four starters returning on the O-line. They also have a WR transfer from UCLA who started 6 games for the Bruins last season so that should help. How well they do on offense will have a lot to do with how our new QB Tony Smith (transfer from Utah) does. I was not overly impressed with him this spring, but he has made huge strides this fall. He is a better runner than passer, but he has a decent arm and some fast but inexperienced WR to throw to.

On defense they are making the switch to the 4-3 and we may take a few lumps there because the D-line were recruited more for speed than size. I think that may hurt us in the rushing game, but help us with the passing game where Ellerson left the corners in man coverage 90% of the time. We return all four DBs, two LBs and three D-linemen. Our D-coordinator, Greg Lupfer, was Walsh's D-coordinator at Portland State and his defenses were usally at or near the top of the defenses in the Big Sky so I think we are in good hands on that side of the ball.

One big thing in the Hornets favor is that this is your second game and this is Cal Poly's first.

Looking forward to the game hope we see the Hornets on the schedule every year.

Hahahahahaha, wow...you've gleamed all this from summer practice? Your new coach is a genius, your new quarterback is the second coming of Tim Tebow, your RB's are really fast and ours are just learning, and there is no comparison between receiving corps....

Go suck on a tri tip and come back when you think you can be somewhat impartial...

Who cares who this JA is! After the Hornets upset Cal Poly he'll run back into the barn he came from.

I think we catch a big break having already played a game - most coaches agree that teams make their biggest improvement from week 1 to week 2. It doesn't matter how much talent Cal Poly has, they won't be nearly as talented as UNLV. I think this weekend showed the MWC is a very tough conference, and my guess is UNLV finishes 4th behind BYU, Utah, and TCU (8-4 or 7-5 and a bowl bid).

I was thinking it was going to be close given it’s on the road following a rough loss against a talented team, but screw it. I think the Hornets dominate with the run game and burn cal poly with the play action pass. The defense keeps the inexperienced cal poly offense in check and maintains pressure all game long. :twisted:
