Cal Poly

Homecoming week for us, as well as Walsh and a few other Cal Poly coaches. Sounding like a broken record but the Mustangs had last week off. They feature the triple option, but this year their QB, Graves, can throw the ball as well. They've lost to North Dakota on the road, and also to FBS Nevada in overtime. They already have a couple impressive wins, at home against Montana and on the road at Mo Valley power South Dakota State. No doubt they would love to get this game. We are going to have our hands full this weekend.

I wonder which Viking team will show up on Saturday. The one that plays well at home or the one that loses games they should have won? Viks are capable of winning, but so is Cal Poly. I'd say the betting line would be in favor of Cal Poly by about a TD.

Looks like Saturday is going to be wet and windy.

I'd say the over/under on total rushes by both teams is about 110.

This "glass half empty" guy does not have a good feeling about this one. Our season is developing as the exact opposite of 2015.

At least Sacramento State is on the schedule.

That's a lot of missed defensive assignments.

A lot of miscommunication on offense as well. Its mid-October. It is kind of late to be having all these mistakes.

Why do I even bother to go to Providence Park. This wasn't a good football game. There was only team playing and it wasn't PSU. We have real coaching problems. Northern Colorado?

Defense? Aren't we going to play defense anymore? It is like we're playing offense with the defense members playing with one arm tied behind their backs. Whatever happened to our defense?

Program has taken a real step back. It's too bad. I just hope that Barnum will be able to effectively recruit after this season. He said he's going to rely on FBS drop downs to fill gaps, that will be harder to sell if he can't guarantee success. I'm not going to start throwing stones, but you can't keep saying you are young. All teams are young from season to season. EWU, Montana, UND; the key is developing your young players quickly to fill gaps left by graduation. If you are constantly filling your roster with drop down players, I'm not sure if you ever fill the pipeline.

Don't be too hard on your defense. Cal Poly put 601 yards and 38 points up on South Dakota State's defense. South Dakota State just knocked off #1 NDSU yesterday and held them to 17 points and 304 yards.

Coaching is teaching. Teaching how to shed blocks. Teaching how to tackle. Teaching how to calculate pursuit angles. Teaching how to ....

As an aside, in rainy Ellensburg yesterday D2 Central Washington played D2 Western Oregon before 4,063 football fans. Our gallant lads played Cal Poly before an announced crowd of D2 proportions, 4,019. Mon Dieu!

I'll state the obvious, right now we are not a good football team. Too many mistakes on both sides of the ball. Good football teams are not trying to fix this halfway through the season. Good football teams do not miss assignments this late in the season. Good football teams only have to "tweak" their system every week, not worry if the team is all on the same page or not, play after play after play.

What was up with Seisay not seeing any action? He was suited up but I don't think he even played a down.

Bruised shin heading into the game, according to Mike Lund. Unclear as to when it exactly happened.

It is definitely hard not to feel some discouragement. The crowd was small (hoping that was related to the weather). Honestly our offense didn't look too bad. We put up 35 points and moved the ball effectively. The line actually looked as good as they have all year. I still don't get some of our play calling but overall I'd give us a B.

Defense really is a mess. Tackling is getting worse. And you would think after getting burned on basically the same two plays we should figure out how to bounce a LB outside and keep two deep for cover. I'm trying to be patient given we lost virtually all our starters from defense last year. But we are not improving. @Alan has it right. Good coaching is good teaching. I know we struggle with good teaching on the offensive side with so many first year coaches. We must be struggling with teaching on defense as well.

What was hard to hear Saturday was people in the crowd saying it looks like PSU football is actually worse than it has been for the last few years and they may not be back to watch...

Here's hoping for minor miracles during our buy week...

Well my wife and I have no intention of sitting through something like that again. Maybe game one next year. They already have our money for this year. Next year one game at a time. I don't believe we will have any trouble getting tickets.

With the Ducks having a bye week, it would have helped for us to have better weather. But we had such a buzz around town last season that we needed another good season to keep it going. I don't want us to lose what we had last season.

Thinking like a true rivalry, however, I'm beginning to want a win over EWU the last game of the year to regenerate some of the buzz heading in to next season. EWU quite possibly could be #1 going in to that game.

Has our coach of the year explained what is happening here? Has he indicate to the faithful what he is doing to correct the situation? Is anyone being held responsible?

Taking the team to the zoo does not teach them how to tackle!

Actually, I find this simply amazing.
