Cal Poly

Maybe the best chance this team has at a win, this weekend at Cal Poly, a team that also was expecting good things this season, but like us have not tasted victory yet. Homecoming week of sorts for some of the Mustang coaches, led by former Vik coach Tim Walsh. Hard to believe that the Vikings are on their third coach in the 10 years since Walsh left. Walsh stayed at Portland State for 14 years before that, succeeding the immortal one, Pokey Allen. Late kickoff on this one from San Luis Obispo, 6:05 pm PDT. Right now, the weather people are saying temps should be in the 60's with a chance of rain.

But if you allow it, I could end up losing again!!

I guess I have enough to retire.

Pretty rugged season for both squads. Cal Poly has had decent offense, defense and special teams play this year but not all three(or often even two)in the same game. Should be a real competitive game in San Luis Obispo this Saturday night and it may very well rain.

Since 2007 we have never won less than 2 games. Get ready for a record of the decade +1. If we don't win at Poly, we're 0'fer!

Gotta love Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Terrific school.

Ever get the feeling both universities are being suppressed, oppressed, somehow depressed artificially? After our hearlded win at WSU, I can't believe that there is not something artificial blocking our progress. We need to find it, destroy it and wipe it cleanly and utterly out of out way. We need to both get up and out of this conference and make our gains.

Maybe Chris Miller out of West Linn High School would welcome some part-time work developing up our QBs.

Could he serve as a part-time offensive coach at PSU?

Since @BroadwayVik opened the door just a bit I will dive through...

There is something depressing and suppressing this football team. There is a solution. It is an age old formula that if you want to be a winner, find a winner to lead you. And best of all it will probably start at the right budget number this administration can live with...

I've had the same thought. His record thus far is very impressive.

I would go with someone who is a PSU alum who has shown they know how to win in the Big Sky, and nationally. Someone who has some baggage but would be eager for a second chance. Someone who knows the opponent does not get a fair shake in Missoula, Bozeman or Cheney. Someone who knows exactly what they are up against here.

Robin Pflugrad

My preference would be to take on Robin Pflugrad and keep the George Fox coach in place for the time being, he being such a good fit and hire for them. Pflugrad needs vindication: he needs to legally punish Jim O'Day for his illegitimate firing of him. Getting him installed at PSU may get him feeling good enough to do just that.

Robin Pflugrad -- a proven winner needing vindication PSU can offer him

Jim O'Day -- a shady accuser needing punishment, utterer of nonsequiturs

Given the storm Harvey Weinstein has created, Pflugrad is probably many years away from a head coaching position. Just imagine the frantic media coverage in Portland if he was even being considered.

Interesting @BroadwayVik @bigskyconf, I didn't know the whole Robin Pflugrad story. Good thoughts but sorry to say I might find myself slipping to the dark side with @Alan on the timing. Can't imagine this administration sticking out their necks during this time in our society. It would be bold and might have great odds of success but I can only imagine the student activists...

But on second thought you never know, any press might end up being good press especially if he turned the program around...

If I may say a few things on this, which is why I linked the article from Ken Goe. There has been a "culture" of such in Missoula, going on even before the hiring of Pflugrad. And, as seen recently, this "culture" did not go away after the firing of Pflugrad. Pflugrad came to Missoula and tried to change this "culture" and encountered resistance. Whenever someone comes in to an established "culture" and tries to change things, he can come across as fairly unpopular, and, even in generating success, he can be let go as a "scapegoat".

What more could Pflugrad have done at Missoula? He made the players attend lectures on drugs, alcohol, behavior, and sexual assault. He ended a freshman hazing ritual that put incoming players through all kinds of atrocious actions. Instead of being applauded for this in Missoula, he encountered pushbacks and resistance, basically being told to let the boys be boys. Therefore, when the feds came to town, direct them to the patsy, let him take the heat and the university emerges unscathed.

Ever since Walsh left, the football team has basically gone downhill. From what I'm hearing, no one cares about the team, from the city to the alums to the students to the fans. Granted, I am not advocating a coaching change, but I can't ignore what I'm hearing. Maybe a desperate coach seeking redemption at his alma mater is what PSU needs to breathe life into the program.

"What more could Pflugrad have done at Missoula?"

Reporting free legal representation from Montana football boosters for players accused of crimes would have helped.

Pflugrad was looking to parlay his time at the UM into a FBS head coach spot. I don't feel sorry that he was a bag holder when everything went down in Missoula and he pushed out the door.

We may be 0-8, but we also don't have a history of rape, duii, and assault.

This isn't about whether Mr. Pflugard is a good guy or a bad guy. It is also not about whether he was treated badly or appropriately at Montana. It is about whether or not given the the current outcry against sexual abuse, someone who was fired over charges of sexual abuse in the program for which he was responsible would be considered an acceptable choice for our football team's head coach. He might be able to produce a winner at PSU, but I don't think he would come close to getting that opportunity.

Hoping that the Rain will give the Vikings an advantage! This team really needs a win this season.

Most of the rain is supposed to occur tomorrow between 10:00AM and 3:00PM. After that nothing. However, Spanos Stadium natural turf does not always drain well. I doubt this will be anywhere near the field conditions of last years playoff loss to San Diego.

Sounds like the best choice for music tomorrow is Albert Hammond, "It Never Rains in Southern California".

No rain today please. we will pass to win and they will run to win. We need it dry. If our corners can lock down any receivers we can stack the box. Short pass plays with a new QB and we will have a new and more effective look. Wish this game was at home.
