Cal State Fullerton @ Portland State

Cal State Fullerton (3-6) at Portland State (5-2)
By Sports Network

GAME NOTES: The Portland State Vikings try to run their home win streak to five in a row today as they entertain the Cal State Fullerton Titans in non- conference action at the Stott Center.

PSU has obviously won all three home dates so far in 2010-11, but the team has yet to be truly challenged by a threatening adversary. On Thursday night the squad topped visiting George Fox by a final of 92-58 to boost some stats and capture their fourth win in the last five outings overall.

As for the Titans, who have home dates against both Occidental and Montana coming up over the next 10 days, they have lacked any real consistency over the last few weeks, alternating wins and losses for seven games. Last Wednesday night, the program again shot for back-to-back wins for the first time this season and again was denied in a 73-62 loss at Arizona.

With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Titans are ahead of PSU by a count of 4-2, although each team won on their home floor back in 2008 when the rivalry was renewed after laying dormant since 1980-81.

Devon Peltier tallied a team-best 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field for the Titans, but still the team came up small in the double-digit loss to the Wildcats at the McKale Center. Orane Chin chipped in 14 points and Jer'Vaughn Johnson added 13 for a team that finished the outing shooting as well from three-point range (.538) as it did at the free-throw line in the outing. Johnson, the only returning starter from last year's squad, did not appear in the first four games of the season for the Titans, but since returning to the lineup he has really been a threat on offense. Outside of the three-point effort versus USC in his first game of the season, Johnson has stepped up to tally double digits in every outing and because of that Orlando Brown has watched his playing time diminish considerably from almost 30 minutes per game to just 17 per over the last three contest during which he has tallied a combined seven points and six rebounds. Peltier has assumed the scoring lead for the Titans with his 16.0 ppg right now.

Against an opponent like George Fox, a program that operates at the Division III level, you would expect to see the Vikings rule and that's exactly what happened earlier this week in the 34-point decision. Chehales Tapscott recorded a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Nate Lozeau had one of his own with 16 points and 10 boards as well for the Vikings. Charles Odum posted a team-best 20 points and Chris Harriel another 15 as the squad shot 50.7 percent from the field for the game. Harriel, who has made good on 27-of-30 at the free-throw line thus far, is producing a team-best 14.9 ppg over seven games, followed by Melvin Jones (13.0 ppg), Tapscott (11.9 ppg) and Odum (11.6 ppg), but even with that balanced attack the Vikings are still having trouble posting comfortable victory margins. Granted, PSU did win by 34 the other night, but still that means the group is being foes by an average of just 3.3 ppg.

There's nothing like padding a few stats when the opportunity presents itself, but still the Vikings should have enough talent to take care of Fullerton at home today anyway.

A game the Viks were somewhat lucky to win, not that Cal St-Fullerton was a better team, but PSU did not play well for the majority of the game. Stayed close enough to win it down the stretch. Odum made 6 straight tough free throws down the stretch and Harriel had an amazing second half. Chris is becoming a clutch player and the team leader.

We played like crap and seemed to wake up with enough time in the second half to win.

Where in the hell did they get these yahoo officials from? Uh, we can call a timeout when we don't have possession of the basketball? Coaches can come out to mid court to bitch about calls and not get a T? Both teams were hosed by the officials tonight.

Cal State-F's three shooting was unreal for a quite a while, and that made it a game. Oh,and our interior defense sucked rocks.

Hey Dane Johnson, put up the effing three ball when you're wide open.

Odum: Well done. Iced the game for us tonight from the line. Your play to penetrate to the basket didn't hurt either.

That guy Chin for CSF is a player. I was glad to see him exit on fouls.

Onward Vikings!

I agree it was not pretty, but there were also a lot of positives. Dane Johnson had 7 assists and 0 turnovers, not bad. Harriel has sure shown the ability to knock down jumpers this season, to add to his slashing to the hoop. And it's nice to see a guy like Odum who really seems to want the ball in clutch situations, and can come through.

Can't wait to add Phil into the mix.

The better conference PSU joins, the better the television coverage. The better the television coverage, the more the officiating is seen by the viewing public. The more the officiating is seen by the viewing public, the more they are held accountable and cannot get away with the kind of nonsense they do in the big sky conference.

I still recall conference tournament games against Weber State in which officiating was clearly biased in their favor near the game's end. But the officials feared no reprisal and thus did not even bother to hold themselves accountable. It is highly unlikely things will change in this conference. A leopard does not change its spots. Moving up then also benefits the spirit of the game, helps with the purity of the game as the officiating is held much more accountable than in leagues like the bigskY.
