Candidate for OC

Wash St just announced that they have relieved Paul Wulff. He's available. I think he can make for a damn good OC. From what I've read and have heard, he did very well at EWU as their HC. I think Sperbeck should pick up the phone and schedule to interview him. What do you guys think?

The OC at Sac pays probably $45,000, Paul Wulff was making upwards of high six figures. Nice thought, but highly unrealistic. Maybe interview Wulff as the HC?

The OC role would probably pay more than that and the OC would more than likely double as a position coach. Anyone at OC would be better than the play calling we saw this season. First and foremost Sperbeck has to figure out if he is going to stick with this Pistol experiment, then find an OC that best understands whatever offense he is going to go with. Or he can bring in an OC and hand over the keys to the offense. Whatever it may be something needs to change.

I bet the pistol is one and done. I think we'll see a return to the 2010 offense.

He can use his earnings as from Wazzou as a nest. Sac St paycheck = bills money. :geek:  :twocents:

Given that I know his family here in Lodi, I would LOVE to get Paul Wulff at Sac. But GCM is correct about the salary situation.

My choice for OC is the Special Teams and Recruiting Coordinator at UCLA....

Sacramento State: Sources tell us Weber State offensive coordinator Matt Hammer interviewing for same position at Sac State.

Wow, looks like Sperbeck isn't wasting any time in fixing something he obviously saw as a need as well... Seems like he could be a good pick-up.

Matt Hammer enters his sixth season with the Wildcats coaching staff. The 2011 season will be his third season as Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator for the Wildcats. He also coaches the wide receivers.

Hammer came to Weber State in the spring of 2006. During the 2006 season he assisted Kevin Clune, working with the linebackers as a graduate assistant before being elevated to full-time status in 2007. Hammer was the WSU Recruiting Coordinator for three seasons with the Wildcats.

Since joining the staff he coached several Wildcats to prominence. He was instrumental in the development of running back Trevyn Smith, who became the first player in WSU history to rush for 1,000 yards or more for four straight seasons. Smith led the Big Sky in rushing three seasons and became just the third player in Big Sky Conference history to earn First Team All-Conference honors four times.

Hammer also coached fullback Marcus Mailei who was a two-time All-Big Sky First Team member and won a Super Bowl ring with the New Orleans Saints in 2010.

In 2010 Hammer coached the wide receiving group that included Joe Collins and Mike Phillips. Collins earned All-American honors in 2010.

Hammer graduated from Southern Utah in 2006, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education with a minor in Criminal Justice. He played both receiver and defensive back at Southern Utah under coaches Ray Gregory, current Utah State head coach Gary Anderson, and Wes Meier in his four seasons with the Thunderbirds.

He was a standout prep star at Clearfield High School where he earned two varsity letters in football and three in baseball.

Hammer and his wife Sheena are the parents of two children, Jagger and Skylee.

Sounds like Coach Hammer would be a good get. He was around WSU when they rose from the cellar and into the top of the BSC and into multiple playoff berths. WSU ran a balanced offense so that would most likely mean the Pistol would be thrown out. Also he was the recruiting coordinator and WSU has had some pretty amazing athletes the last handful of years. Very interesting.

Looks like Sperbeck is moving fast on this OC issue and that’s good, especially considering its recruiting crunch time. An experienced OC would be something to sell to potential recruits.

The WSU board said Hammer was only the OC for 2 years (since 09), and split those duties with another coach. He was the RB’s coach before then.

I sure hope this happens...whether it is this coach or another candidate.

I think Coach Sperbeck is doing a fine job as the HC, but the added duty of OC makes it tough. The change to the Pistol didn't quite work out this year, though I understand the reasoning. (Using Flemings running ability as a threat). I would love to see them move back to a spread team with a zone read.

We saw this years offense become less productive than the numbers that were put up in 2010. I think alot of that had to do with injuries. We basically went thorugh a starting QB, 4 running backs (which hurt us most IMO), and then most of the starting WR's suffered some sort of injury throughout the year. I was suprised that we didn't see either of the WR transfers play much, the UTAH transfer at all and only a few plays of the tall SF transfer.

On defense we had some moments we looked very good and others we look over matched. We allowed a few running backs to put up big numbers this year, and this will need to be addressed. Though we had a few injuries on the Defensise side of the ball, it was nothing compared to the Offense.

Looking forward, I think we will be OK with the QB situation. I like the 3 returners and see alot of potential. At WR I believe we are OK as well and in fact will be young and deep for a few years, provided 2 or 3 of last years recruiting class transition to players. OL I think we are young but with good size, maybe adding one JC kid here for experience. My biggest concern on Offense is depth at RB. We need to pull a JC kid here to add depth, or we will be going with a JR and RS freshman next year.

On Defense, I think we will need to recruit some size and depth up front. We ended up playing a true freshman "Castro" becuase we lacked size. I think going to the JC Well for depth here will help us tremendously. We need to find some kids that can occupy space so that our LB's can make tackles and put pressure on the run. I like both the LB and DB skill set, but we will be lacking depth net year. Adding a couple transfers here would help as well. One of hte LB's being a strong rush end to replace you know who...JMHO :coffee:

So sorry SDH...wasn't trying to steal away the recaps...I just starting rambling :)

I also realized that i need to review my posts before submission...my grammer and spelling sucked

No worries, great minds think alike. :thumb:

SSS finally caught onto this development and got a hold of Wanless for some informative comments.
Wanless:
We have talked about this in the past and at this point and time (Sperbeck) is looking at bringing aboard an offensive coordinator. The process is beginning. As you talk with people and you find out about those who are interested and those that you can attract, what are the qualifications that they bring with them is part of that process.”
“The end result is simply to make the football program better,” said Wanless, who added Sperbeck has his plate full as a quarterbacks coach, offensive coordinator and head coach. “If it means we adjust some of our coaching responsibilities, then that’s what we’ve done.

“When he was hired, he was brought on to be what he has been. … As the program has matured, he has found it challenging to do all of those responsibilities. It’s just a natural transition of our football program. As far as I know, we were the only football program in the Big Sky that did not have an offensive coordinator.”

For all the complaining and bitching that has gone on (a lot by me of course), it's good to see Wanless and Sperbeck taking a proactive approach to this shortcoming. Hopefully the right person can be found and brought in to improve the program.

OC position has an offer out:
Current Weber State offensive coordinator Matt Hammer has a job offer in hand from Big Sky rival Sacramento State, but sources around the program say he is waiting to see whether he will be retained by the incoming Wildcats coach, whoever it may be.

Hammer is waiting to see who WSU selects as its next coach before he makes a decision on the Sac State offer. WSU has said they plan to make a HC selection by next week. Sounds like we will have to wait until then.

This guy sounds like he would really like to stay in Utah if possible. I think we should pass and keep looking, there has to be more qualified candidates out there at this time of year.

Who's to say he doesn't. Look he is doing what all of us do in our own professional fields: evaluate all offers. In this case with WSU, he wants to know if the incoming coach has the same offensive philosophy, or even trying to see if he can get more money to boot. Who wouldn't do that? We all would like to stay in the same place for a while because you start to put down roots, hassles of moving, etc. But if the offer for us is too good to pass up, he will come.
