Candidate for OC

We need a OC who can recruit and develop a QB. Not a JC or a transfor, but a good high school candidate. A candidate who can play three good years, When he graduates, have another kid come right after him.

Does Jake Geringer count? Will be a red shirt freshman next season, highly rated, groomed to be the heir apparent.
We are on the right track with Jake Geringer. Now the OC needs to develop him. Cross your fingers.

Bummer.

So again, I say Tom Craft of RCC should be interviewed.

Or Eric Tripp of Humboldt St. Don't know why that one didn't come up sooner. After all, DII HSU did something we couldn't do, beat UC Dorkus. Also, HSU won the GNAC title.

Damn. The sooner an OC is found and hired, the better. Sperbeck can’t afford to procrastinate with this.

I wouldn't expect anything to happen until Mid January. Remember most of the coaching changes (firings) occur during the XMas holidays...I'm just hoping we can fin some young upstart coach that will be here for 3 or 4 years.

PS

Paul Wulff should be interviewed if by New Years he hasn't landed another FBS gig. Yeah, he's gotten at taste of the big figures as a FBS HC, but he had already made six-figures as EWU HC. I'm sure if he is offer no other gig he would overlook salary consider/ take the OC gig at Sac St in order to stay relevant in cfb.

How is Sperbeck procrastinating? He did interviews last month, he offered the job, the offer was not accepted, back to square one. The last thing I want him to do is to rush and hire a unsuitable OC and have to live with the consequences. There are plenty of qualified coaches out there and will be in January and Feburary. As we approach spring camp that window will close. The priority now is recruiting recruiting, recruiting, until letter of intent day!

Procrastinate is probably the wrong word but I think an OC should be brought on sooner rather than later. Sperbeck should already know what kind of a coach/OC he is looking for (character, demeanor, capability, work ethic, etc.) and he should already know the type of offense he wants to run (unless he is going to completely hand over the keys). I’m expecting Sperbeck hires someone with a year or two of OC experience. I don’t see a well established person coming in (money) and a well established person wouldn’t be looking to be a Hornet long term (ambition). Maybe he is looking along the JC ranks. I really don’t care where the OC comes from so long as he has some OC experience and he is a good fit for this program. Sperbeck doesn’t have the time and Hornet fans don’t have the patience for an inexperienced OC to learn the job on the fly.

I feel the quicker this position is filled the better it will benefit recruiting. For one, the OC might have some recruiting ties which could help land recruits immediately. Secondly having an OC on board and knowing what type of offense will be used for 2012 can only add another pitch to sell potential recruits on Hornet football.

From Footballscoop.com

Sacramento State: Sources close to the program tell us that Northern Arizona offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Brian Lindgren has interviewed for the OC position and that Southern Utah quarterbacks / receivers coach Paul Peterson will interview tomorrow.

Two strong candidates for OC! I lean more toward Lindgren, NAU has a history of good offenses and QBs, and Lindgren is currently a OC Peterson isn't. Both look like a good picks! Lindgren and Peterson are more pass oriented while Hammer leaned more toward the run.

I agree. NAU’s Lindgren has OC experience. Plus I like what NAU does on offense: balanced attack, single back, some shotgun, lot of multiple TE & WR sets. Not to mention he is already familiar with BSC defenses. I think we have a roster that can easily move into that style of offense this offseason. Also NAU recruits SoCal VERY well and could have some connections down south.

Peterson sounds like it would be more of a “learn it on the fly” kind of situation but given the void at QB he could definitely help with QB development. Anyone know how involved with the play calling Peterson was at SUU?

QB Sorensen and a couple or the stud SUU WRs made Peterson look very good the last couple of years. I think his candidacy may be fool's gold.

I would absolutely love Lindgren. I know it's not all him, but it always seems like NAU QBs (second only to EWU over the past decade or so grooming QBs?) come out of nowhere to burn the BSC. Their defense has always been their weak point.

I can only imagine the damage we could do with a 4-year starter at QB with Lindgren calling the plays, Sperbeck managing a game, and our defense not blitzing itself out of every third play.

I like that Lindgren was an Asst. C at Redlands (DIII) in San Berdoo county. I think that ties with Redlands is why he has continued to recruit So Cal at NAU. SFV and Ventura are definitely filled with talent. So many HS in SFV. And St. Bona, Oaks Christ, and Westlake in VC are goldmines for recruiting fb talent. I leaning more towards him, but Peterson's O knowledge is good. LIke Sac St, they earned a lot of attention and respect when they defeated a FBS (UNLV) team this season. His QB played better than Haucks.

These guys came to SD and we had to play them my senior year of HS. They had a RB named Booker who later went on to play at Florida State (I think). They jumped on us early but we put up a fight. We got scorched by about 3 TD’s though. That team was deep.

I kind of feel the same way too. SUU had a disappointing season as well considering their talented passing game and huge OL.

I think NAU had the best overall defense in the BSC in 2009. For whatever reason they have always been around the 5/6 win mark under Sours for the past 7-8 years. I believe they did have a playoff appearance in the early 2000’s.

Good informative update on the OC search posted on SSS. Bradley got a hold of Sperbeck and we finally get something straight from the man himself:
* Weber State offensive coordinator will stay in Ogden, Utah, where he will work with new coach John L. Smith.

* He has not interviewed Northern Arizona offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren, contrary to a report from FootballScoop.com.

* He has interviewed Southern Utah passing-game coordinator Paul Peterson.

Sperbeck declined to name the other two candidates.

“I’d rather not talk about the candidates right now because some of them do have job situations they’re working through,” he said.

So much for Lindgren from NAU. He would have been a great steal but it would have been a lateral move on his behalf. If anything he could be using the Sac State position to leverage a raise out of NAU, oh well. Hopefully Sperbeck can find the right guy in the next 10 days.

Definitely, but poaching from your own conference is never good. At least with SUU, they're not officially part of the conference yet.

I say look hard in your back yard before you bring in a castoff from another program. You gotta take a good hard look at Aaron Ingram for this spot. He has really brought along the running game over his time there and would know how best to utilize the talent that is already there.

I watched the Yt clip (SUU at NAU) posted on SacStSports and both OC styles looked good. Peterson, if my analysis of the clip is accurate, appears to be a westcoast O type of OC. Saw lots of swing and short passes. A few play-action and deep balls were mixed, think I counted 4 passes that went beyond 15 yards in the air. I know that the emphasis of the clip is Peterson, but I like what I saw from jack O too. Either would work great for Sac St.

Ingram...you got to be kidding. We have to able to do better than that. What's his experience at OC, high school ? Considering the names that have been mentioned so far this would be a giant step backwards.
