NAIA team coming to town, albeit an elite NAIA team. The Fighting Saints probably don't belong on the field with PSU. Here's hoping the Vikes knock them down early and often and don't give them any reasons for optimism. Give an underdog a glimmer of hope and it can lead to heartbreak.

For those with the patience and stomach for it, there is a thread on this subject on egriz

Griz fan here, and one who is sick of hearing about how the CC saints could compete with or even beat both the Griz, and much of the BSC. My co-worker is a CC alum, former player/coach, and is among the ranks of those who preach that gospel. I have made a wager with he and another of my co-workers, who also played at an NAIA school, in which I will buy both a round at a bar of their choosing IF CC can beat PSU or keep the game within two touchdowns. I am so SICK of the chest pumping from CC players as well as their fan base, and am looking to PSU to put to rest the notion that they are even close to the same caliber of the BSC's top tier teams. I am pulling for you guys, and NEED you to lay a beat-down of epic proportions on the saints of CC, and put an end to these endless discussions. :D GRACIAS in advance, because im sure this one will not be close.

It's just like most BCS vs FBS match ups. Depth. Sure, maybe you can match up in a couple positions early, the 2 and 3 deep guys are light years away from each other.

I suspect this should be a pretty big blowout.

My thoughts as well. Hard to compete with only 20-some scholorshipws vs. 63 or whatever it is we're allotted in the FCS.

I didn't think Carroll had access to scholarships. Maybe I'm wrong on that, but depth will be a huge issue for them come game day.

NAIA football programs are permitted 24 scholarships to be spread out as they choose (partial).

NCAA DIII does not have any scholarships.

These private schools also frequently hand out "academic" and "need based" scholarships for football players in addition to any athletic scholarships.

I just took a glance at the Carroll College roster. Leaving out the 20-some freshmen without numbers- presumably this year's recruits - you still have 48 freshmen, 27 sophomores, 15 juniors and 16 seniors. It's a young team. For QB you've got 1 junior and 4 freshmen. The junior is their QB - Stonehouse. He's 6'1", 205 and fast, a two-way QB. My guess is that our DL will give them trouble from the beginning. Their first string lines are nearly as big as ours, but it drops off quickly after that. Depth will definitely tell.

Interesting post on a board for their spring game:

'Pedestrian, rebuilding, uninspiring, average. I don't see playmakers on either side of the ball outside of a couple seniors on defense. I think this will be a very interesting year in the newly expanded Frontier Conference. Neither Demaris nor Rinker played at RB.'

Sounds like they may be down from years prior, but the big issue I have here is that I'm reading a NAIA football message board on a Sunday night in August.

Carroll 1 - 0, heading into the Portland State game:

Demarais, Carroll ‘D’ rise up in win over MSU-N

New season, same old Carroll College.

Reigning NAIA Player of the Year Chance Demarais picked up right where he left off, running for 142 yards, the Saints defense came up with a pair of turnovers and limited one of the best offenses in the Frontier Conference to 228 yards, and Carroll overcame a sluggish start to beat MSU-Northern 31-6 Friday night at Blue Pony Stadium.

After looking at the stats it's pretty obvious that Carroll's running game is their bread & butter. That is a good challenge for our DL, which needs to assert itself and force the QB into passing situations so our Defensive Ends can apply pressure and allow our DBs some much needed experience. 7 days and counting!

I had no idea that Havre, Montana even existed. I guess you do learn something new every day. ;-)

This should be a good test of our ability to stop the run.

as someone who watches and attends a lot of games for Mizzou, the Griz and the Saints, I don't expect this to be close.

CC is, IMHO, down a bit. There strengths have always been in the lines. The QB this year is athletic but not in a strong way...he's more quick and slippery. I was not overly impressed watching him last Saturday -- at least not at this stage of the season. The RB, Chance Demaris, is big and fast. There is a tendency to discount RBs from podunk towns, but honestly the line between Chance Demaris and the Griz' Chase Reynolds is not the big. Chance running behind the big Grizzly lines would excel.

PSU should be able to handle the line play and cruise. My biggest hope is that CC doesn't have injuries.

A few years back when CC was really strong they had Idaho State scheduled and I thought they would have competed well....ISU was wayyyyyy down and CC was at a peak. That's not the equation now. As for the Griz, I don't think I've seen a year where I thought CC would come within 3 TDs of the Griz. Much of the talk comes from a year or so there when the Bobcats were beaten by Central Washington. CC played CWU later that year...lost, but were more competitive. Then went on to beat CWU a couple of times.

Depth and overall team speed should be the difference. Carroll has exceptional coaching and will be where they always are at the end of the year....in the top 4, if not the top 2 playing for a title.

Viks 49, CC 7.
