That is beautifully Pro-Active.

I've looked a little more closely at Carroll's roster. They've got 4 seniors running around 290 on their O line to break holes for the running back, Chance Demarais (a senior) to get loose through. He's relatively big - 6' 230. Simplistically put, that's their running game. They use it to great effect against smaller lines (Pioneer Conference). Their QB can run too. If in the beginning we can stop the running game, they haven't got much in passing. Our offense should take them apart handily. This week MSU-N held them to one touchdown for the first two quarters; we should be able to hold them for 4. No pushover, but we should win comfortably.

Hats off to Carroll College. They played a hell of a game tonight. They also had a great showing of fan support on the west side. How many plays did that kid in the yellow shoes play tonight for them? I think it was Norbeck. Both ways. Tough kid. Carroll has great heart and some great linebackers.

Some observations:

*Penalties:
Not an issue tonight, I repeat, not an issue. :-)

Offense:

*Great tempo.

*The McDonagh era has begun. There appears to be no juke in this kid, as he'll just lower his head on whoever comes up to him. While I like that, it may not bode well later. He lowered the boom on a couple guys tonight, but then again, it was an NAIA team. Big Sky linebackers pack a bit more punch.

*Adams runs very hard.

*Damn you Carroll College for the late hit on our All American kicker. I hear that it's a sprain, but it wasn't good to see Brown down for that long.

Defense:

* Jackson on the D line. Beast. This guy is going to be good.

* I've been critical of Michael Williams in the past at corner, but I think he's found a home at safety. I thought he played well tonight.

*We should never, ever give up 100+ yards to a NAIA team on the ground. I don't care what offense they run.

*I have a feeling that the pick-6 will be a game standard this season.

All in all I was disappointed. This was basically fall scrimmage #3. We shall see what the UND game yields.

Still, as good as you might expect with a true freshman quarterback starting. And yes, the rushing yardage is troubling. UND plays essentially the same game. With more depth, they could be a handful.

Frustrating that we are not further along in our development on both sides of the ball. We will have to improve a lot this week to have a chance against UND.

Some quick and random thoughts:

*Give Carroll credit, very disciplined and well coached team. I was surprised their O and D-lines played as well as they did.

*Duyndam has to get his punts off quicker or this will be an issue later on.

*McDonagh shows great potential, but agree with Marty, he may not want to impersonate a fullback while running for his long term health.

*Running back and Linebackers will be the strength of this team, especially early on.

*The worst part of the game has to be Brown's injury, I hope it's not serious!

*Defense's performance in the first half should have them running many lines this upcoming week.

*Thomas Carter could be a real surprise at Wide Receiver.

*Take the win, learn from it, and get ready for a tough game at North Dakota.

Go Viks!

I agree. This game was a real slugfest, and I give Carroll a lot of credit for hanging with us. We really need to kick things into gear if we're to repeat or improve on last season.

The best things this game did was show where PSU's weaknesses are. Maybe they can fix a good portion of them quickly, or we may take a bit of a step back this year.

I can't imagine Carroll losing many games this year.

After one game, I'm huge a DJ Adams fan. Gotta love a kid who is asked about his 46 yard touchdown run where he had to hurdle a tackler and juke a couple others, and in the video he gives all the credit to the o-line. Love it when guys come off really well in interviews.

Oh, and one more thing...

I'd been concerned about snaps to the QB and long snaps on special teams during fall camp. Didn't seem to be much of an issue yesterday, so hopefully that's a sign of how things will go this season.

You mean other than the snafu on the first possession ?

I agree that this fall it has been a concern, but long snaps don't seem to have been too big an issue (I don't think) - but just the regular snaps, and because in the pistol virtually every snap is not from under center, this has to be locked down. Hopefully Mitch and Kieran will develop that chemistry.

I'd say overall. Yes, there was an issue in the first drive, but for the most part it was ok.

This. Love this guy.

I wanted to give PSU fans a big thank you for the hospitality you showed the Carroll fans at your great city! I am also thankful that your Athletic Director who gave us a chance to play 'up' and compete against a much bigger league. I am sure after the game you realized why um and msu won't play Carroll! Their fans think it is because um and msu are too good for Carroll, but the real reason is because there has been many years Carroll would give them all that they can handle and every year they know we have a great chance of beating them. This is a somewhat down year for Carroll, but they still are able to show that the gap between Carroll and the bigsky is not that big. Matter of fact, I am one of the Carroll faithful that thinks Carroll played the best team in the bigsky and they would have beaten any other team in the conference, including the 'mighty griz' and the ' 4th ranked cats'!

Thanks again for a great weekend and enjoy your season!

Griz fan here, and one who is sick of hearing about how the CC saints could compete with or even beat both the Griz, and much of the BSC. My co-worker is a CC alum, former player/coach, and is among the ranks of those who preach that gospel. I have made a wager with he and another of my co-workers, who also played at an NAIA school, in which I will buy both a round at a bar of their choosing IF CC can beat PSU or keep the game within two touchdowns. I am so SICK of the chest pumping from CC players as well as their fan base, and am looking to PSU to put to rest the notion that they are even close to the same caliber of the BSC's top tier teams. I am pulling for you guys, and NEED you to lay a beat-down of epic proportions on the saints of CC, and put an end to these endless discussions. :D GRACIAS in advance, because im sure this one will not be close.

Hey hm.grwn.fan,

I think we probably work together, and now I can say I told you so! You have always been a pompous ass talking about how "mighty" your Griz are, and how you think you are 'worldbeaters'. Let me tell you a little secret, the Griz may have 40 more scholarships and 25,000 bandwagon fans, but we still have Van Diest and we can still come into your stadium and give you all that you can handle. Call your AD, whoever it is this week, and lets have a game, so you can shut me up!

Thanks for letting me use your forum to let this rant out!!
