OK, now that I've sobered up, I can think about this a little more clearly.
First, I'm pissed off. I think any time you hold a six-point advantage with less than a minute to go, and blow it, fans are within their right to be extremely disappointed.
Second, I'm grateful we even advanced to the championship game in the first place. We clearly were not the most talented team in the Big Sky this season, and despite the fact that the media picked us to win it in the preseason, I think we overachieved this season.
Third, just because Randy is paid MUCH more than any other Big Sky coach, and just because we have the best venue, facilities (and in my opinion, school and location, too), that does NOT guarantee a championship every season. I know it's an apples to oranges comparison, but look at the New York Yankees, who have a payroll that dwarfs every other team in baseball, yet they only win the whole thing less than 25 percent of the time. There's simply too much parity in sports these days when it comes to talent, especially at the mid-major level. It's unrealistic of us to think we'll win it ever year (or even every three years), although I have high hopes every season.
Fourth, all of that being said, Randy does have a track record of blowing big games. Yes, he's won a championship game for us three times, but he's also lost five of them (including the CIT tournament). Several of those came down to things relating to clock management and missed free throws. Simple, inexcusable things.
Overall, I'm still proud of this team. We'll probably be hosting a CIT game (or two) next week, and we'll get to watch our seniors play one more time. Despite our late-season slide and last night's disappointing finish, we got to watch Harding blossom into a young star during that span. He's going to be something special, and I'm already looking forward to next season.
The sun came up this morning, we still have the best basketball program in the Big Sky, and I still feel good about having Randy as our coach.
