Change is needed

Baldwin's staff has become complacent. We will never get back to the promised land trotting out the same tired defenses year after year after year. Rotate positional coaches or hire a newer defensive staff whole sale. We also need to change our philosophy about not bringing in JC transfers or P5 shopping around for P5 dropdowns.

Interesting thing to think about, but we're down 50-9 right now to a team that is one win +.500. We need to get this deficit down to even have a shot at the playoffs with a win next week. We've been blown out two weeks in a row. 7-4 might not be enough even if we beat PSU.

That said, hard to imagine how we beat Portland State next week.

I haven't said anything earlier, but since you've posted it, I think we've seen enough to know this isn't working. I think Graham does a good job with the linebackers. You'd be hard pressed to tell me what Sawyer or Schemdding are doing to continue confidently with them working DL and DBs.

Sawyer is especially concerning. The only impact guy he recruited for DT is Katoa. The 2010 guys came from the previous regime, and Pulu was a transfer. The last two years have been scary bad on DL. Honestly, after last year, I was shocked we didn't bring in some defensive transfers.

   , but it's not the players- it's the process.

I would never call for anyone's job, but change is definitely needed.

I'd be surprised to see Baldwin fire anyone anyone. Maybe change things up with the current staff, yeah, but doubt he fires anyone.

Disagree, he has fired an assistant before.

We tried that last year. It didn't work at all. It's not like our D is middle of the pack in the Big Sky, we're dead last in a conference full of bad defenses.

Change isn't always bad or painful. Look at WSU, the fact they can play a little defense this year has completely breathed new life into that program with darn near the exact same guys on the field.

Not happy to take a loss like this, but sometimes having a season like this is good for a program. Look at 2009 and 2012.

Not sure about this... we went 8-4 in 2009 and were national semifinalists in 2012.

The only team to spank us in either of those two years was Cal, who was a top 10 FBS team.

I agree. I suspect after we give up over 50 next week, I wouldn't be surprised at wholesale changes on Defence with outside new blood. Expspecliy if we finish as the worst defense in D1- which may happen.

That's what I mean. 2008 and 2011 were poor seasons. In a way, I think the OP has a point about complacency. We have ruled the roost for so long, sometimes it's ok to have a "down" year to get things back into perspective. We need to get back to playing with a chip on the shoulder. Or maybe a boulder, like we used to have.

Also time to get back to recruiting some blue collar kids from rural WA that can play some defense. Recruiting "speed" has done nothing for this defense.

Gotcha. My mistake.

That said, without looking it up, I don't remember the 2008 or 2011 teams taking a beatings like this. That's what is so shocking about the last two games, it's like we've just checked out mentally... like we've quit. I mean, we've looked like we just didn't want to be on the field over the last two weeks.

NAU and Montana are decent, but we're not talking about dominant teams. Montana needed pure luck to beat Idaho State last week, and NAU got beat by UC Davis. How do you go out and get run off the field by teams of that quality?

That's what I was saying! Seems like the guys are just going through the motions. Something is up where it looks like everyone quit on this year.

This team ? That seems to be missing this year. No leaders on O or D, no chip on their shoulders, honestly, looks like the coaching sucked this year across all levels !

I think a large part of the problem is that we've played down to the level of our opponent so often in the last few years, that we haven't learned to play a complete game. We always try to do the bare minimum and win. We don't put the throttle down and beat teams us, and we always seem to be on the losing end of physical matchups. You can see this in the sheer volume of injuries we sustain every year.

Over the last 3 years, we've had enough talent to get away with it. We could play absolutely rank defense and give up tons of yards and points and our offense would compensate. We don't have the talent to do it anymore, but the team hasn't modified to play harder, they've just kept rolling with the bad habits.

What pisses me off so bad is that we really came out and played our asses off against Oregon. Yeah, we got beat, but we seemed to play every down with a sense of urgency. You felt the fire and the fight. But since that game, it's just disappeared. We conjured up enough fortitude to win some close ones by simply having a drive or two, but now we can't even do that. And what is really odd is that this is the healthiest we've been since week one, and we still get our butts kicked all over the field. Hell, we can't even convert extra points.
