This future Vik had quite the freshman year at Clackamas Community College. I hope his verbal commitment to Portland State becomes a reality.

Tapscott is a 6'6" forward who plays the boards like a center, taking down something like 15 rebounds a game! And he averages about 15 points a game, with several 20 plus games. A great backup for Nelson. We'll have a strong bench next year. Bone can sure find them. Now if he can only find a center.

I really hope he can become eligible here. He would be a great addition. I'm not sure he'd play small forward given the group of players. I'd like to see him at the 4 so that the rebounding at that position improves.

Another great season for the future Viking:

Clackamas men repeat as NWAACC champs

KENNEWICK -- Chehales Tapscott has a certain joie de vivre about him as he runs around the basketball court.

He smiles at you when he swats your jump shot out of bounds. He laughs as he slams a roundhouse dunk on your head.

And Tuesday night, the 6-foot-6 forward was happiest of all holding the championship trophy after he and his Clackamas teammates destroyed Lower Columbia 72-49 in the NWAACC Championships at Toyota Center.

"This is fun," said Tapscott, whose 26 points and 21 rebounds capped an outstanding tournament performance that earned him MVP honors for the second straight year. "I could do this all day long."

Clackamas coach Clif Wegner could spend the entire day watching him too.

"He's one of the best to ever play in the NWAACC," said Wegner. "I love watching him play. He loves basketball and he's so full of joy."

Everyone on the Clackamas bench was in high spirits as the Cougars won their second straight NWAACC championship -- both times beating Lower Columbia in the finals.

This one was rarely in doubt.

Tapscott, who is headed to Portland State on a full-ride scholarship, scored the game's first basket 3:25 into the contest, and the Cougars would never trail.

The teams had met twice during the regular season, and the Red Devils won both by scores of 75-70 and 87-79.

But this time around, the Cougars kept Lower Columbia's offense out of whack as the Red Devils scored just 15 first-half points and trailed 28-15 at intermission.

"They got 15 offensive rebounds in the first half," said LC coach Jim Roffler. "We dug ourselves a hole in the first half and couldn't recover."

Jeff Dorman, who was also named to the all-tournament team, finished with 15 points for Clackamas.

Marcus Bell led Lower Columbia with 16 points and 15 rebounds.

2013 IBL MVP Chehales Tapscott Remains Hopeful Heading Into NBA D-League Draft

(Tapscott ended up as a 4th rd draft pick by the Maine Red Claws) Good Luck Chehales!

The 2013 IBL MVP, and 2012 IBL Rookie of the Year Chehales Tapscott is looking forward to Friday’s NBA D-League draft. After participating in yet another Idaho Stampede open tryout this fall, Tapscott feels like his game is ready for the NBA D-League stage.

Tapscott has put together two impressive seasons in the IBL, and could be a valuable addition to an NBADL squad if he’s drafted this Friday night. In 20 games for the Vancouver Volcanoes last season, Tapscott averaged 23.5 points and 14.9 rebounds in 36.1 minutes. Tapscott also set an IBL record this past season by recording 20-straight double-doubles. Tapscott would be the first player ever to be drafted from the IBL to the NBA D-League.

If Tapscott were to get drafted, it would be a solid step in the right direction for the IBL, as the league is looking to gain further recognition as a development league for the NBA D-League, especially for players right out of college who are looking to play professional basketball.

According to a source, Tapscott is on the Bakersfield Jam’s draft board.

Tapscott spoke with DleagueDigest.com, and shared his thoughts on the possibility of playing in the NBA D-League. “I felt like I’ve been overlooked my whole life, so if I get the chance to be on a D-League team roster, I’m going to take it and make something of it. Also, another really appealing thing about the NBADL is that it’s in America, my family and friends can watch and support me. There is nothing like having a great supporting cast behind you as it will boost my motivation even higher.”

Tapscott participated in the Idaho Stampede’s Portland, Oregon open tryout earlier this fall, and expressed how fortunate he was to do so again. “It was great to be invited back to the Stampede work out in Portland. I had a great experience working out with the Stampede and Blazers’ coaching staff. It was great to play against some of the pro talent that was there including my rival from the IBL Jared Cunningham. It’s always good to match your talent against others who want the same spot as you.”

After his dominating season in the IBL, and having experience playing overseas, Tapscott feels like he’s ready for the speed of the game found at the NBADL level.

“The IBL possesses some really good talent including D-League players, and I’ve held my own against them every time. Also, the speed of the IBL game is a little faster as the shot clock is 22 seconds. I adapted to the speed of the game, and learned how to use my athleticism to my advantage. I worked out with Coach John Bryant with the Jam, and Larry Lewis when he was with the D-Fenders, they pointed out parts of my game that can translate to success in the D-League. I just need a team to give me a chance.” Tapscott said.

If Tapscott is selected in the upcoming NBA D-League draft, he’ll be ready for whatever comes his way, including the grind commonly associated with the NBADL season. “I’ll take care of my body with ice baths and eating healthy, but I’ll also be mentally tough. I’ll always think positively, and that’s where my family and friends can help by pushing me to fight through it.” Tapscott concluded.
