With regard to Brees, he was demanding a big time contract while coming off a torn rotator cuff, and quite frankly had they signed Brees for the money he wanted, the Chargers would have simply had too much money wrapped up at the QB position. I was okay with the move to not sign Brees due to the injury. It was a risk and they went with Rivers, which obviously has worked. If my memory serves correct, Rivers was a rookie when Brees was in the final year of his contract. Not sure what other super bowl caliber QB you are talking about. If you are referring to Eli manning, it wasn’t Spanos that drove him away, rather it was father Manning who believed (and probably still believes) that playing for the Charger organization is below a Manning and isn’t acceptable to the family. Father Manning was the key reason the trade between Rivers and Manning happened, and quite frankly I believe the Chargers drafted Eli out of spite.
Rivers attitude is different, but it is far from Leaf like. Rivers has an extremely competitive attitude that drives him to excel on the field which has him come across as a jacka$$. Leaf was just a whiney little b!tch who wasn't ready for the pressures of the NFL.
With regard to how Rivers stacks up against Brees and Manning, yes Manning has led his team to a SB victory, something I believe wouldn’t have happened here in SD mainly because the Giants payroll is and always will be higher than the Chargers. With regard to Brees, he, like Rivers, led his team to their respective conference championships, one step short of the SB.
If this is a dis on Rivers, I highly recommend taking a look at the past 2 or 3 seasons of QB ratings and then tell me which one is better. IMO Brees and Rivers are comparable, both are top tier NFL QB’s, both will probably never win the SB, and both have amassed quite a few wins and have been very successful over the past few years.
Oh and I don’t know if you missed the game last night, but Rivers drove for a game winning TD with just over 2 minutes to go. As awful as the Chargers looked last night (some one please tell LT to retire), good teams find a way to win. (Even if you have to slip a referee a little cash to overturn a sure TD. j/k  )
PS: I’m not a Spanos fan at all so I am not defending him in anyway shape or form. I am just trying to enjoy the last few season the Chargers will be here in SD. The Chargers will be moving to any city that is stupid enough to give a multi-billion dollar NFL team owner and real-estate mogul a tax subsidized stadium…and gift him land for the stadium for pennies on the dollar. :ugeek:
