I find it rather ironic that at PSU, you have a big football coach hired, who really is a press blow-hard...always wanting to be quoted, always over stating the teams reality,,("we will play both UofO and OSU and own the state!")..and then the rather humbling results....then there is the basketball program...a worthy coach hired, but expectations were never over blown and the quotes were always about work and progress being made. Coach Bone has taken this program to another level,,and in reality PSU could own the weak BSC in hoops if the school can keep him. With all the bball talent in this state and his programs positive attitude, they could continue great success,,,after a reality busting 52 point loss at my college home turf..it became very evident that this basketball program really has come a long, long, ways and will continue to,,,be proud of the teams effort yesterday, I thought they had some very good moments, just an ugly seed. That is the error of the entire BSC and all schools must elevate their programs? Will it happen? hopefully ...congrats to PSU on a great roundball season in both mens & ladies basketball....but, will be seeing you in the fall,,,when the hot-air express gets deflated back to the new? turf! Viking basketball has woke Up,,and may have woke up the entire city as to it's potential...Congrats!

The BSC does need to get better as a whole in hoops to elevate the seed of the team that gets the auto bid. Fullerton seems to be pushing for that with demands for better scheduling. Will it pan out? Maybe. Maybe not. :-\

Yeah, I think Fullerton gets it and knows what needs to be done. However, part of the scheduling problem is teams not having quality arenas that would allow for hosting big name schools. That is on individual schools like PSU and Sac St., and there isn't much Fullerton can do about it.
Again, I'll point to UP and the WCC as an example of what can happen when even slight or moderate improvements to arenas are made. UP has a 5,000 seat arena that is nice, but not fancy, and they manage to consistently bring in Pac-10 schools (Oregon and OSU) for home and home matchups, as well as decent WAC programs (Nevada and Boise St.) that can attract a few fans and build RPI numbers. There is absolutely no reason that a school like PSU could not do as well or better with a replacement for the Stott.

Your comments on the basketball program are noted and received with gratitude.

Your comments on the football program, however, are rejected wholesale but can be understood. You likely don't know the history of this program, of the state's fiscal brutality to Portland State and of Portland's indifference.

Mouse Davis is an excellent coach and program developer. One thing he did not have back in the latter 1970s was a media face for his program. Now he has one. Jerry Glanville has said, "You don't take yourself seriously---you take your job seriously." Your name-calling is inappropriate.

The two coaches, Glanville and Davis, began to develop their program using Tim Walsh's recruits. The approach to the game of Walsh and Lupfer was entirely different and they recruited players for their system, not the current one. Without their own set of players installed, one can say that Glanville started his campaign at Year Zero. About 10 percent of the players were appropriate for the style of play they envisioned. Among these include Andy Shantz on defense and Drew Hubel on offense. They adjusted well to the new system. Most did not.

This past year, 25 seniors have graduated and 30 new recruits have been added. The new recruits were recruited specifically for the new system. Of the approximately 70 players returning from last season, perhaps 15 percent are adept to the system (maybe 10-11 players) and of the new 30 players, perhaps a few (4-5) will be tuned-in sufficiently well come Fall.

The season will be a developmental season and will be the first season Glanville and Davis recruits have been added to the new system. My guess is that the year following this upcoming season we should see some real improvements. So I think you're being unwittingly premature in your assessments of the football program. Nevertheless, I do Montana will fall to Portland State this fall in PGE Park.

Hard to believe that of the returning 70 players only 15% will have adapted to the Glanville program. They will have had last year's experience and all of this year to think about it and if necessary learn. Or do you mean they're physically not big enough or fast enough to play what they've learned? I figure we'll be in the upper third of the BSC next year.

I agree; let's not get our hopes up to high this time, they way we did last year. But at the same time, let's be realistic.
