Ex-PSU, NFL star may challenge Murray

http://blog.oregonlive.com/mapesonpolitics/2009/11/ex-psu_nfl_star_may_challenge.html

What with former Trail Blazer Chris Dudley looking at the Oregon governor's race, I couldn't resist the news that another sports figure may run for the U.S. Senate in Washington state.

Clint Didier, a former Portland State University player who went on to play for eight seasons in the National Football League, recently launched an exploratory campaign for the Senate seat held by Democrat Patty Murray.

Didier announced his plans at a Tea Party rally in September in Richland. According to an account in the Tri-Cities Herald, Didier called for ousting President Obama and every congressional incumbent over the next six years. So that gives you an idea where he's coming from.

Didier is one of four Republicans looking at the seat, although he gives no indication of his party affiliation on his web site. He does devote a fair amount of space to explaining how an unheralded farm kid from Central Washington went to PSU - which is not exactly known as a pipeline to pro football - and wound up in the NFL.

As the story goes, legendary Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs came out to Portland to scout PSU quarterback Neil Lomax but came away more impressed with Didier. The Redskins drafted Didier in the 12th round in 1981 and he went on to play in three Super Bowls. (Lomax, it should be noted, also had an impressive pro football career).

After football, Didier returned to Central Washington and bought a farm north of Pasco. He also runs an earth-moving business and helped coach his old high school football team, which won a state championship in 2002.

Great stuff for a sports movie. He'll need equal heroics to have a chance against Murray, who has become a powerhouse in the Senate as the fourth-ranking member of the leadership team and a subcommittee chair on Appropriations. Last year, only two senators brought home more money in earmarks to their state than did Murray, according to a Seattle Weekly piece that nice chronicles her rise.

Murry has $4.6 million in her campaign fund, decent approval ratings and is widely thought within the political establishment to be a safe bet for re-election.
