Coach Andy Thompson - New HC

Lots of players throwing support behind the Thompson selection and retaining Richardson and Fresques. Including…. skatt…

Great choice, nice boost that Fresques and Richardson are staying around as well.

 at all the dooming going around prior to the hire. Nelsen and Orr were never going to let this program implode.

Thompson's defenses have accounted for the top two scoring averages in the school's Div. I era. During his first year (2019), the Hornets allowed 22.5 points per game and gave up 132 fewer yards per game than the previous season. The unit recorded 44 sacks — the second most in program history — and were led by All-American defensive end George Obinna, defensive tackle Dariyn Choates and cornerback Daron Bland who each earned first team all-Big Sky honors. Sacramento State also led the Big Sky in defensive pass efficiency, red zone defense and first downs allowed.

The 2021 team set the school record by allowing 19.1 points per game and was even stingier in Big Sky play, limiting the opposition to 15.3 ppg. That season, defensive end Josiah Erickson was named first team all-Big Sky after leading the team with 18.5 tackles-for-loss and 10 sacks.

This past season, nickelback Marte Mapu and linebacker Armon Bailey were named first team all-league. Mapu also was named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year, becoming just the second player in school history to earn the honor. The defense also played a large role in Sacramento State's historic 12-1 season, recording stops on potential game-winning or tying drives in the final two minutes in four games.

The school’s highest ranked recruit ever, QB Carson Conklin showed his support for the staff yesterday, leading me to believe he’ll still be signing on the dotted line next week!

There was lots of coverage on social media and live on local TV, huge difference from 4 years ago.

Overall, gotta love that they moved this fast, that most of the staff was there to support, etc.

Thompson is going to be more of an emotional, rah-rah guy than Taylor was. TT was so level headed, it was almost hard to tell if we won or lost in his postgame (although there were only a handful of losses). Thompson seems genuine and self-aware. The most interesting parts of the Q and A were when he had to navigate the “did you talk to TT about going with him to Stanford?” question, and when he talked about being completely hands off with the offense other than slapping a WR on the butt when they make a good play. It’s pretty much the reverse of what TT said with regard to his involvement with defense, just disconcerting when the other way worked so well… lol… hopefully this strategy empowers Fresques, who will be a first time play caller…

Orr did his thing, and man, won’t be surprised if we lose him soon too. He’s a steady hand, and so much more involved than I ever saw Terry Winless.

Also, freaking kudos to Nelsen for his legitimate support of the program, mentioning keeping players out of the portal, actually caring about this team and Hornet Sports, hampered as he may be by budgets and bureaucracy. Let’s all hold our breath and hope Perez is really succeeding Nelsen, and that he can follow in his footsteps.

K, this is how a competent D-1 athletic department is supposed to function. A thing of beauty, ain't it. 8-)

Great coverage of Thompson's presser. Keeping Richardson and Fresques alongside Thompson is the best case scenario following the aftermath of Taylor's departure. The continuity of the program has been secured, now it's on the staff and these players to continue execution and we'll keep stacking up wins and BSC titles.

Great idea get a low energy low motivation coach for the RB room. Don’t know who they will get but I hope Gould is not the coach.

My bad, the sarcasm didn’t come through. Field Gould would not be a good choice for us.
