Coach Rahe's Career at Weber State University

Coach Rahe has coached 16 seasons at Weber. I split his career into the first 8 and the last 8. Currently, he has two seasons left on his 8 year contract.

Years 1 - 8:
177 - 87 (includes 13 cupcakes...little over 1.50 cupcakes per season: 164-87 DI record).
2 NCAA Tournaments
4 Big Sky Championships
5 Big Sky Championship game appearances
2 NIT
1 CBI
2 CIT: advancing to the title game the second time.

Years 9 - 16
147 - 104 (includes 19 cupcakes...little under 2.5 cupcakes per season: 128-104 DI record).
1 NCAA Tournament (season 9)
2 Big Sky Championship games (seasons 9 & 10).

The honorable thing would be for Coach to resign. The contract extension was twice as long as it should have been. Plus the pandemic has not helped the stagnation of the program.

Look at the difference between the first and second time we played conference teams. Once again, teams adjust to our playing style and we can't adapt or react. This may have been one our most talented teams on paper ever. Plain and simple. It's time to move on.

But life is good for Oldrunner, even if he and his family are alone watching games in the DEC.

stew and rahe sort of had similar careers. both at their school long term. both were great and loved by the fans with lots of success. stew's final 4 seasons were when they joined the mwc and they weren't winning like they were used to and they were wanting him to retire. they probably had hundreds putting on the pressure to the program whereas at wsu its 4-5 blokes. i believe stew may have retired a few seasons before his contract had ended. then his top assistant, rahe 2.0 took over. it only lasted 2-3 seasons then they upgraded to craig smith who had the most success really of any coach in usu history.

 :+1:

Actions speak louder than words...Coach Rahe at the end of this BSC post season: "they (team) deserved better...";"but that's the the way the ball bounces sometimes...". To this fan, the ball has bounced bad for his teams more often than not these last years of his 16.

I can understand that Coach Rahe was sincere in saying it really hurts & he's disappointed. But do something positive about it instead of continuing to shrug it off season to season & not taking any responsibility for it & making some changes. Maybe he just doesn't know how or is being his admitted stubborn self. The thought is, it's a sign of a coach on his way out (failing), by not realizing things are in a stagnant pattern for the program for a long while. I don't expect him to resign or retire at least till 2024, in fact dread that he'll be given an extension by doing "just enough".

To me, silence is complicity, so I post...enough said. :twocents:

Nothing against Coach. I really believe that he has done his best and is a man of character. The guys he recruits are good kids. They stay out of trouble and graduate. With Rahe Weber will never have to worry about NCAA sanctions or issues. He plays by the rules. He is really good guy and someone that I admire. His system worked for a while and took Weber, in some cases, farther than it had ever been before. Regrettably, athletics isn't about what you accomplished yesterday, but what you are doing today.

Coach Rahe needs to transfer out an assistant coach or two. He needs help. The guys he has aren't getting it done. Our players aren't developing. The bigs are terrible and can't rebound. Nobody can rebound except Jones. Without Jones, this team is sub 300.

If nothing big happens in the transfer portal, I could see Weber State being a sub .500 team next year.

Rahe was given the keys to the kingdom from Bovee and will leave a once proud program into a dumpster fire by the time his contract runs out. I don’t even think I’ll go to a game until he’s out. If he’s stubborn enough to keep making the same mistakes every year, I don’t want to support it with a single penny.

I know he’s a good guy…I’m a nice guy…I could use 300K plus and be as stubborn running a team with no adjustments.

I love the Purple Palace and loved going to games, but this malaise is making it tough for me to want to go. When the Wildcats got beat down by UVU in Ogden and were trash talked and disrespected and did NOTHING…that’s when it became a chore for me to go to games. I don’t see any energy or hunger coming until a new coach and staff are in place…might be too rough to right the ship in two more years. Weber State is now a Football Flagship…never thought that would be the case after two close sweet sixteen years.

Surprise on the retirement (but overdue in my opinion) so :thumb:

No surprise on Duft named HC, wish him good luck but expectations...???... so a sideways thumb sign -->

Hope it works out for a program needing a strong recharge. :coffee:

Please tell me Duft is only interim coach and a search will be done for the next season. Knowing the administration, they probably gave Duft an 8-year contract.

Barring health reasons I am not aware of, Rahe leaving like this only confirms he was going through the motions lately and sees the writing on the wall and decided to bail on the upcoming season. That is poor form to leave the way he did after the University took care of him the way they did.

Wildcats need to open a search for a new coach.

Extremely questionable timing.

I think it's the right decision 2 months too late. (More like two years too late). The cupboard is pretty bare.

I wonder how the three guys that don't go as high as they want in the NBA draft and are going to transfer here feel about this. I think Olds and his sources would have known about this.

Can I borrow one of those paper bags?

Think Rahe chose this time so Weber State would have no choice but to make Duft head coach. The fact that the administration would be stupid enough to make Duft permanent coach instead of interim coach is really depressing and shows they don’t care about winning titles but winning just enough games.

This will set the program back 3-4 more years than if they did a search now and found a qualified candidate. Weber State job although not as prestigious as it used to be, would still garner a lot of interest from quality coaches, but the administration would rather piss away 3-4 years on the “nice guy”. Lord save us.

I’m not putting a nickel into the program for tickets until a new staff is in place after a dedicated search for a new coach.

Seems the all-time winningest BSC coach retiring from Weber might make its own thread on the Weber basketball board!

Well……. You might be right. Maybe the emphasis should be on the Coach we lost and the dynamic new coach we hired? But……. Maybe it’s best to not have a Coach Duft thread? I think the news should be that with these two significant changes…… so far it’s a Ho hum moment. Honestly, I’m not sure what to think!
Has anybody checked on Olds😳

As a former player, I feel grateful for the time spent with Coach Rahe. He is a great human being and was a good coach despite his limitations as a X’s and O’s guy. With how downhill the program has gone the last few years it is upsetting to see that they hired Coach Duft tho. While he has coached for a long time he has little to no composure during games, he shakes in tense situations, isn’t a great motivator, stutters a lot when speaking to players before games, most of my teammates weren’t receptive to his almost belittling style of coaching which is relatively old school and doesn’t fit todays game and doesn’t take others opinions when they challenge his own. He may have also been the very reason so many players transferred out of here. Why do you think a select few former players congratulated him on being hired? I will gladly eat my words if he proves me wrong but I don’t think his tenure lasts long (unless is best friend crompton can’t grow a pair and fire him) and I don’t expect anything to be any different than it was the last few seasons.
