Coaches Show

Since Larry offered to field questions here for the show, why not have a thread for it. I was planning on tuning in again yesterday, but about 15 til I completely blanked and got sidetracked (ADHD).

Larry, could you give us a recap? Will Taiwan be cleared to play this Saturday? What's the extent of Anthony Larry's leg/knee injury?

Here's a snippet from the weekly release on the GoEags site:

Injury Report: Just two injuries came from the Central Washington
game. Running back Taiwan Jones sat out the final 11:39 of the
game after getting tackled during a 65-yard drive that ended when
EWU came up empty on a fake field goal attempt. What was originally
thought to be a minor concussion was actually dehydration from the
game and being sick earlier in the day. The other injury was suffered
by freshman defensive end Anthony Larry, who made his first career
start against the Wildcats but suffered a slight knee injury early in the
game. He is questionable for this week, and Jones is probable.
“We wanted to be smart about it,” said Baldwin of the injury to
Jones. “He wanted to come right back in but at the time we thought it
might have been a slight concussion. You don’t mess with that, and we
weren’t going to put him back in with that kind of injury.”

Thanks joemon, I must've glazed past that. I still want to hear a summary of what was discussed on the Coaches show. :D

Better yet, Larry, can you tell us if we can find a recording of the show on line, like in an archive or something? I'm on the west side and can only hear it if I'm in front of a computer at the time it's on. Not likely during my commute, unfortunately...

Dozy, after looking at the espnnorthwest.com website earlier this afternoon it does not appear that they have podcasts up for any of their shows. I'll be seeing their people on Thursday at the turf dedication and will try to ask about it at that time, provided my memory is good.

A quick re-cap from yesterday's program: Taiwan will play. His injury was originally diagnosed as a concussion, but trainer Brian Norton thought it may have been related to illness. My understanding was Taiwan went through the concussion tests either Sunday or yesterday and was cleared to play and because of the results they don't believe there was any concussion suffered.

Anthony Larry is set for an MRI as soon as swelling lessens in his knee. He has a patella tendon injury and if the MRI shows no other damage, then he will be able to go as that tendon injury is similar to a sublexed joint and can be dealt with through a brace/wrapping.

Forgot to ask about Zach Johnson and whether Jason Harris will be cleared from his concussion this week. Will find out more Thursday when I go out.

Coach Baldwin says this is a different Montana offense than we have seen in recent years. Chase Reynolds has 18 carries in two games and that was a half to three quarters work for him in the past. They are throwing the ball much more this season (76 passes to 50 runs, counting sacks as passing plays) and it looks like more of an Oregon offense, which makes sense given where Coach Pflugrad came from. They have a number of big play receivers as well. O-line does not look as strong as in past years, but still are effective. Special teams are outstanding. Defense takes lots of chances and are comfortable leaving the corners on an island. Coach Baldwin feels Trumaine Johnson might be the best corner in all of FCS football, but EWU will not throw away from him. Boyce's post pattern TD last year was against Johnson, so they'll take some shots his way. RB coach Chris Hansen said Mario Brown may get some time at RB because of his explosiveness. Coach Baldwin believes the deep ball is coming around and they need to hit one on UM early. Montana is a very disciplined team and EWU has to match that discipline and their intensity at the start.

My comments now: QB play will be crucial in this game. BLM has to make some deep connections and the receivers can't drop key passes or run bad routes this week. That gets back to the discipline comments above. O-line has to pick up the blitz. D-line has to get pressure on UM and force their QB into some hurried passes. Secondary must tackle well in the open field as UM has slippery receivers who can make big plays. Special teams must stay in their lanes on coverage and somebody has to catch the ball on punts and stop letting them bounce. I think EWU has a lot left in their playbook we haven't seen. UM may too. Should be a helluva game.

That's exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for the info Larry, it's a big help.

I agree about having more up the sleeve in terms of the play calling. Other than the trick FG play, it looked fairly vanilla on Saturday. I hope to see some trick plays with Greg Herd like we saw in both the Spring and Fall camps. I also want to see us be more aggressive on defense, blitzing more than we have, especially against UM. Their line is weaker than it has been and with the switch to a pass-heavy offense, it only makes sense that we take advantage of that, especially early in the season like this before they can get a lot of experience and cohesion together. Can't wait until Saturday! GO EAGS!!!!

If the Eagles don't play those corners up tighter and blitz more often we will get blown out ! Same needs to be said about the offense clicking more on the passing game ! You need to stretch the field but at the same time make them respect the run ! And O by the way !!! Special teams could have alot to say about victory or defeat !! GOEAGS !!!

I agree about the play-calling and not having shown our whole hand in that regard yet. I had a feeling we would come out against CWU and play fairly vanilla, and that seems to have held true.

We aren't going to get blown out. This is the marquee game of the year, and you better believe that the team is going to be up to the task. I expect our Eagles to let it all hang out on Saturday against the Griz, it should be a good game. And great to know that TJ will go and that Larry's injury doesn't seem too severe! If we hadn't heard anything about Z Johnson, chances are he should be good to go as well!

Go Eags!

Larry, were you able to find out if archiving the show (even if only for a week until the next one) on their site is feasible? I usually have a calendar note on my phone remind me, but often I'll have something else that I have to take care of that keeps me from being able to listen in. It'd be a huge help to be able to just go to their website and listen to an archived mp3. Thanks in advance!

Bump.

After looking at their website, I don't see any podcasts or interviews available from any show on 700 ESPN The Ticket. They would replay the Shock coaches show prior to the Shock pre-game show. Don't know why they don't do that for EWU. Sorry I cannot be of more help...

Thanks for looking into it Larry.

With even old dudes like me listening to podcasts, this is something a station like 700 could do to stay ahead of the curve in the competition and sell additional advertising for. Plus, I don't think podcasts are very expensive to produce.
