Coaching NEWS

"LeTs IgNoRe ThE sUcCeSs AnDy AnD tHiS sTaFf HaD bEcAuSe It DoEsNt FiT mY nArRaTiVe!"

First off, the '23 playoff win is meaningful as it proved all the doomers and detractors wrong both in our fanbase and for those claiming we didn't belong in the postseason. The road playoff win put that argument to bed for good. Why anyone, let alone Hornet fans, would want to discount our 2nd playoff win in D1 history to advocate for a coaching change is quite egregious.

Secondly, who from that '23 season quit that had a big impact on this season? What other roster changes/losses had on the field impacts? Sorry, your efforts to frame the narrative by viewing it from a vacuum from 2+ years ago by ignoring all the changes (both foreseen and unforeseen) makes the whole "coaching change" argument unpalatable.

We'll see what Coach Thompson does with this staff, if anything, but keeping Conklin here is the priority.

You were very concerned about our having a coaching change for our team.
Many of us thought we needed to make some changes. Coach Andy T. Made a great move for himself and a great move for Sac State Football as well in my opinion. It’s all working itself out as destiny does in the end.

The credit then transitions to AD Mark Orr whom I think is one of the best AD’s in the business. His support from Pres Wood is awesome and in synchronicity as they have recruited and retained next level FB Leadership for our program.

I personally couldn’t be more happy with what I’m seeing. The future looks bright with our program, 🏆

The building of the family of new coaches and players is his next step. But with what I’ve see thus far I feel confident this locker room and staff will be cohesive and electric to watch!

Sorry.., I’m about to say something that some might get mad at me about. But we need to raise those FB Ticket prices at least $5 seat! Just saying fellas!

I also proposed to SAC12 they should discuss having ready upon completion of our NEW FB Stadium a SAC STATE Based FBS Bowl Game called the “Capitol City Bowl!” The Bowl Game would be based in our New Stadium. Nice revenue generator for our facilities and community.
Go Big or Go Home!
Go Hornets!

If you are not on twitter today, the entire coaching staff is being introduced, and there seems to be some coordinated hashtags and graphics being shared by all committed players!
Interesting that Merchant is listed as OC/QB coach… so where does that leave Fresques since he’s said to have been retained? Recruiting Coordinator?

Ball Boy Assistant to QB Coach & OC

Just kidding. Seriously

For his ego etc and since he’s on contract. I think they will give him some type of “quality role” with QB’s. Maybe Analyst Role.

Truthfully. I like Bobby. But he ego burned him down. He never invested in himself to improve and he learned very little under TT. I was shocked at how basic he made our offense after TT left.

I lost a ton of faith in him as an OC. Hopefully he can be productive and help this new administration.

I’m not trolling. You guys are acting like coach is changing the structure of our coaching staff, when so far it’s been almost EXACTLY how our previous staff was setup.

I just don’t understand
He’s changing people because maybe he didn’t feel a sense of urgency from our staff? Maybe he thought he had some people w better ideas that might connect better with our team?
HC takes responsibility for his team. If you don’t let them make changes then we can’t hold them responsible for results.

Going with HC choices on his staff is what I would do as well. He saw KR as OL coach was delivering high quality work and results.Retained him. That was a good move IMO.

I’m excited and hoping that 25’ season will be exciting and deliver great results and FBS invitation.

You’re misconstruing.

He’s talking about the positional titles. The defensive passing game coordinator role has been in place at Sac State ever since Troy Taylor took over the program. Cherokee Valeria held that title until Darren Walls was recently named as his replacement.

The coaching staff roster on the Hornets website is up to date… no Fresques and haven’t filled out all the “GA” roles or assistant support staff that we had prior in regards to recruiting and interns.

But we have a new hire that many D1 schools have gone towards with a General Manager title. This screams NIL/Portal manager.

And just like that, this might be the biggest “clue” yet as to what is coming…

I would have been fine with Coach Thompson and the gang (with some staffing adjustments) returning as I think the talent was there to rebound in their third year. Folks saw the 3-9 record and in typical modern fandom era had a massive overreaction and meltdown to the lack of results, and understandably so. There are just too many resources invested in Hornet football for a 3 win season to be acceptable.

That said, with the departure of Coach Thompson Hornet football is getting a hard reset and I think Dr. Wood and Orr hit it out of the park with the Coach Marion hire. Coach Marion is obviously in tune with the modern day culture and on goings in college football as evident by nationwide talent and experienced staff he is bringing into the program. I'm excited about the direction Hornet football is headed.

NIL money is contingent on getting to FBS, right? We can all connect the dots.

No way people this smart and this accomplished make mistakes like hiring for positions that may not be needed, or taking positions that set their careers backwards when they were on the rise.

There's been some speculation on Twitter that we'd be joining CUSA. I hope that's not the case. I feel the west coast regional matchups would be way more appealing, whether it's MW or PAC.

If CUSA, I guess this is how our conference would look:

Florida Int'l
Jax State
Kennesaw State
Liberty
Louisiana Tech
Middle Tennessee State
NM State
Sam Houston State
Western KY
Sac State

Will be a killer travel schedule.
However, CUSA is a stepping stone FBS conference and I think PAC at a reported $18-20M per school, seems high, might be a bridge too far out of the gate. Navigate FBS reclassification and 3-4 years be in a position to 'upgrade'?
I saw a tweet, that Sac is projected to have a $60M budget, we are at $36M now, so the $20M is in line with what the PAC is projecting in the tweet. What is the CUSA payout currently?

I thought CUSA was gunning for Tarleton, and they still might be?
Does CUSA have the same panache for the $75M NIL contingent?

The plot thickens.

I responded to one of those rumors/posts with a not interested. Cool to be FBS, wouldn’t be excited to have NM State as our closest conference regional rival and big potential for lack of opposing fan travel to our “new stadium”. And also from the student athlete perspective not a fan of that length of travel possibly every other week or back to back weeks. Imagine getting a bad schedule draw and having to fly to FIU and Liberty on back to back weeks. And anything better is only like an hour closer.

Hope it's all speculation because people are anxious.
