The Tribune is by and far a solid weekly. No reason not to believe them.

If so, this is a good hire.

I'm shocked and pleasantly surprised that Chisholm would go out on a limb instead of taking the perceived safe choice. Very interested to see what Burton has planned for schemes and assistants.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised if you think he's that bad. OSU developed some really solid corners when he was there, and he's long been known as a great recruiter. Now--this doesn't mean much at a larger school where the HC doesn't recruit much, but it should make a huge difference at PSU. As I mentioned before, I think a lot of what he can do--both recruiting and on the field will depend on how he fills out the coaching staff, but youth almost always produces results. Young, unproven coaches like Pat Fitzgerald and Brett Bielema were in the same boat prior to their hires at big time programs, and have won consistently--and not all on the players of their predecessors. I am confident we'll see better energy from the players and entire coaching staff going forward, and more wins.

I'd be interested to see if there's going to be a quarterback controversy with Hubel coming off knee surgery.

Why is this a horrible hire? He was the coordinator for two years at Nevada in a conference that get's its noteriety for its offensive prowess and immediately improved their sacks, tackles for loss and double their previous year's interception total. He improved a hapless defense to 3rd in the conference in scoring defense and total defense anlong with leading the conference in rush defense. Not to mention the fact that all the places he has been the team has won.

Also why do you believe that this guy is unprepared? My little brother is on the team and the information from all the interviews is that he was definately the most prepared and most genuine about the opportunity to coach this team.

Not only that but Burton has had a prior stint coaching at PSU and knows the situation that he is getting into, with the resources, fans, and recruiting area. I usually don't write often but I was getting tired of you ripping every candidate besides Speckmen. Although Speckman in an amazing man and coach, he just wasn't what PSU was looking for. Now they have a younger, high-energy coach that can come in and demand more out of these players. Something that has been lacking for the last three years.

I am sorry if it seems I was ripping the other coaches, that certainly wasn't my aim. I simply saw one coach as being stronger than the others and Burtons resume to me didn't seem very strong. I also did concede though that there were things about him that if I knew more about I could support. If he is all that you guys say he is then AWESOME! I only want to see the Vikings do well, I am excited to see what this guy can do, yet am fearful that he is not prepared to be a head coach. I think it is a valid concern all things considered but if the players are behind him and he works his butt off I am sure he will do just fine. Maybe he could hire Speckman as his OC that would be the best of both worlds for me. The old sage offensive guru and the young gun recruiting extraordinaire. Either way GO VIKINGS!

Yeah, It'll be fun. Hubel? Engstrom? Somebody else? Will it matter whether or not the QB can run? Hangs on the prospective OC. But for that matter, will we go with 4-3 or 3-4? And will reruits signed with the tantalizing NFL connections of Glanville in mind hang tight? Lots to think and talk about this winter.

JG's own recruits had been bailing on him for a couple of years now, so I don't think that any defections can be blamed on the coaching change. If anything, maybe recruiting will improve as Burton may be more willing than JG to get "drop down" transfers or JC guys.

I don't mean to be argumentative but why in the world was he your first choice? He has been a coach for 9 years and has not had much success as a coordinator. He is not the best choice.

Hi Vikings,

I think you might have hired a diamond in the rough. I get tired of all the old recycled coaches and think PSU might have made a great hire. Of course, only time will tell, but look at how well a lot of young coaches have done lately. Turner Gill at Buffalo, Kevin Sumlin at Houston, Steve Sarkisian at UW, etc. Think Josh McDaniel and Sean Payton in the NFL. Burton's been mentored by Mike Riley and Chris Ault and they are both experienced and talented head coaches, so I think you might be very pleasntly surprised. Being young and very smart, he will likely be a great recruiter for Portland. And he's from Sacramento, so he'll be tapped into some good NorCal high schools for talent. I would say he's a high risk/high reward candidate, but you could have done much, much worse. By the way, I'm a PSU grad (who played at Sunset High School for Mouse way back in the day), but had two sons play for Sac State and one is the defensive line coach there now, so I'm a huge Big Sky supporter. Its time for Sac State and Portland State to rise up and become great rivals. I'd love to see us both beat up those Montana schools every year. :)

Good luck with the new coach except against the Hornets!

He has been a coach for 9 years and has not had much success
1) Success: Burton spent the last five seasons as cornerbacks coach, helping the Beavers to four bowl victories. He was a part of a staff that has enabled Oregon State to finish ranked in the top two of the Pac-10 Conference for defense in three of the last five seasons.

2) More Success: During his first season with the silver and blue in 2008, the Wolf Pack doubled its interception total from the year before and recorded 36 sacks and 100 tackles for losses, with both totals marking dramatic increases from the season before.

3) Physical Game Play: In the ’Dogs’ 52-14 embarrassing loss to Nevada, which hardly qualified as a football game, the nation’s leading rusher, Ryan Mathews, was knocked out. 8 carries for 32 yards.

4) Hot up comer: Burton's name came up in Sarkisian's first interview after being hired on Dec. 6, but only because Sarkisian said he remembered coaching against Burton when Burton was at Oregon State and Sarkisian was at USC.
UW has tried to hire Burton a couple of times over the past couple of years. His loyalty to Mike Riley kept him at OSU.

The next time the White House's new occupant searches for a metaphor about how it's possible for untested leadership to turn the tide, he might want to reflect on the NFL.

Vikman - I commend your latest post on the merits of Burton. As Marty points out over on goviks.com, since the search began a number of new posters appeared and have driven a hard not to say pushy agenda for Speckman and to a less extent Borges. These posters are new to the list, I repeat. One can only conclude that they appeared out of nowhere specifically to push their candidate. They've turned negative now that the choice has been made. They only thing they seem to have against him is lack of experience = 9 years instead of Speckman's what? 15? Borges' 12? The latter two might be longer, but you get the point. Sounds like they care more about their candidate than PSU football. Too bad.

Sunset High and PSU. You're tops in my book. :-)

His resume seems absolutely fine for us. Maybe not tops on the list of final five, but certainly more than good enough. But it's about more than just a resume. It's about vigor and youth and motivation and inspiration and recruiting. And on these "nonresume" factors, Burton looks great. Go Viks! I predict 6-2 in the Big Sky first year.
