What happened to the guy who was OC at Nevada and wanted to bring the pistol offense to PSU?

Chris Klenakis...

I think Osia Lewis (played at Oregon State in the 80's) applied for the Portland State vacancy last time, here's his bio:

We need to hire someone who comes from a winning program. We cant hire someone just based on their ties to the area. Hire a winner from a program that has won or a coach that has built a program from the bottom cause we are pretty close to the bottom now.

From footballscoop.com:

Portland State: We hear former Oregon wide receivers coach Robin Pflugrad is a top candidate to replace Jerry Glanville. Pflugrad is coaching at Montana this season. Williamette head coach Mark Speckman is another name coach Portland State will likely talk with. BYU assistant Jaime Hill and Nevada assistant Nigel Burton could get involved as well.

Willamette's Speckman would be a perfect fit at Portland State

Former Viking QB Eric Kiesau is the current OC at Colorado and would be a great candidate. The entire staff at CU may be let go.

The CU Head Coach Dan Hawkins may be let go as well. He'd be great at PSU since he won a bunch at Boise State.

Nigel Burton's profile from the University of Nevada's website:

Speckman would be a horrible fit here. The guy went 2-9 two years ago and 3-8 after that. He's been mediocre at the Division 3 level at best.

Hire a winner.

Canzano a few weeks ago:

PSU has a larger enrollment than any other institution in the state. It will hand out more degrees than Oregon or Oregon State next spring. It has a solid research budget. And PSU's economic impact to the state is estimated to be $1.1 billion annually.

Stay with me here...

Because tuition on the campus is still affordable by college standards ($5,700 annually for in-state students). And the campus is gorgeous. And based on the statistics that show an astounding number of you have been in a classroom on the campus, it's clear that either you took a class at PSU or someone you know (and love?) did.

I only bring this up because Portland State is playing a home football game on Saturday against Northern Arizona. And PSU will start Connor Kavanaugh (Lincoln HS) at quarterback. And if you sift through the team roster, you'll find a large number of athletes who played prep football at area high schools.

Note to you: This is your team.

Canzano today:

They have a commuter campus. The players are leftovers. The fan base is fickle. There isn't an abundance of resources or facilities. Which is only to say that Portland State University needs to get real with itself before it hires its next football coach.

Oh boy...

What kind of pictures does Speckman have on Canzano? Weiden and Kennedy couldn't give him this kind of publicity, and I happen to know that he was never seriously considered last time around. Winning at a D-III school is a far cry from winning in D-I, and he hasn't even done that much winning!

A correction: forestgreen didn't write that, forestgreen posted the link to Canzano's article, which this was the headline.

What about Tim Camp from NAIA Eastern Oregon. He took over a team that went 1-10 in 2007 I beleive and in his first year (with the same team, and what I imagine as not a very strong recruiting class) he turned the team around to 5 wins in 2008. In his second year (this current season 2009) his team nearly made the playoffs and pushed conference and national powerhouse Carroll college for the conference title. This season his team finished in the top 25 and from what I hear had they not had a huge let down and been upset by a team they had already beaten once very convincingly, they would be in the first round of the playoffs this week.

P.S. He is a graduate and former player from OSU and grew up in the Portland/Vancouver area if my facts are correct. He has was an assistant at Bucknell before coming to EOU and I beleive there was a few other East coast stops he made a long the way.

Just throwin' his name out there. TIM CAMP

Tim Camp could be a good choice, but there is only one name to dip into the NAIA ranks for.

The name is MIke Van Diest.

He only has the #2 team in the country in Carroll College at the NAIA level and has won five national championships at that level.

The guy knows how to recruit and is a defensive mastermind.

My thought is if he wins a national championship again this season then Portland State would make a lot of sense for the next step because Hauck and Ash are pretty entrenched at Montana and Montana State.

Someone asked if Mike Kramer was still toxic and I would say no, but as a second choice to Van Diest.

If you Viking fans really want to dream make Belotti would give up the AD job at the U of O and lead PSU if he missed coaching badly.

MIke Van Diest was also an assistant at Wyoming under Joe Tiller. If PSU can get him, he'll take PSU to places i.e., playoffs and Big Sky titles!

Lets take a special look at the coaches that would probably be interested in the program and have experience in winning football games or building a winning football program:

Jay Locey (Assistant HC Oregon State):
http://www.osubeavers.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/locey_jay00.html
Pro's:
Earns $160,000 at Oregon State (Possible pay raise in coming to Portland)
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2009-coaches-contracts-database.htm
Had tons of success at Linfield
DI experience last few years in Corvalis
Local Ties, Etc.
Con's:
Might not want to move "down" to FCS?
May be looking for a better paying HC job?

Jeff Tisdel (HC at Sierra College -CA)
http://www.sierracollege.edu/Programs/divisions/HealthPERA/football/coaches.html
Pros:
Former Nevada-Reno HC
Won Las Vegas Bowl in 1996?
Has built Sierra College into one of the best JUCO programs in CA (37 game win streak)
Was a finalist for the Sacramento job a few years back (probably looking for a new job still?)
Recruiting ties in NV, CA etc.
Con's:
Might not be willing to move to Oregon?

Nigel Burton (DC at Nevada Reno)
http://www.nevadawolfpack.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10000&ATCLID=1546910
Pro's:
Young, experienced recruiter
Ties to Oregon recruiting
Con's:
No HC expierience
Very little experience coordinating
Might not be willing to move down to FCS?

Frankly I am not that impressed with Speckman's record at Willamette. He is marginally over .500 in winning percentage with a losing record to Linfield. Not exactly the credentials I would like to see in our next head coach.

Speckman would be a feel good story, but we need someone who has a background in the allocation of scholarships. DIII teams don't give scholarships.

There was a good point on The Fan yesterday as well. It wasn't about Speckman per se, but it was about DIII football. Brett Elliot had made the comment to Suke that practice starts at 2pm, or 2:30pm, depending on when everyone gets there. When everyone gets there? Not to sound like that Dan Hawkins rant a couple of years ago, but this is division I football. Practice doesn't start when you get there, but it starts at a set time and if you're late, there will be discipline. This is just a small example, but DI (albeit FCS) is very different than that of DIII, and we should make our choice accordingly.

What is there to correct? I understood that everything was Canzano's, which is why I asked what kind of pictures Speckman had on Canzano, not forestgreen.

I hope that you guys do get a guy like Justin Wilcox or Bryan Harsin here at BSU. But I don't know if Bryan will ever leave Boise. He played HS and collegiate FB here and has always stayed here. He wouldn't even take the head OC job at Alabama under Saban a couple years ago for a lot more money. Maybe he's determined to eventually get the head job at BSU if Peterson ever leaves. In any event, best of luck in your coaching search!!!!
