I saw the same thing in the Tribune. TV coverage of road games would be huge for PSU. If they put any home games on TV (I remember a couple being on FSNW a few years ago), they should be sure that the cameras are placed on the east side (by the MAX line) so that the crowd shows up in the picture. Otherwise, you have the cameras facing that visiting sideline with no fans and gives a poor representation of the gameday atmosphere.

Only when the sun has set.

I saw what happened with Timbers broadcasts when they tried to do that- picture trying to watch a game in the midst of the glare of a nuclear blast.

Frank Geske Named Running Backs Coach

http://www.goviks.com/release.asp?RELEASE_ID=2742

Portland State Football Coach Jerry Glanville has named Frank Geske as his new running backs coach. A student and practitioner of the Run-and-Shoot offense while a high school head coach, Geske will now work with its’ mastermind, Offensive Coordinator Mouse Davis.

Geske began his career at Portland State in 2005 as the running backs coach and will continue in that role. He is the third and final holdover from former Coach Tim Walsh’s staff.

“Frank’s overall strength in the interview process was not only his coaching of football, but his knowledge of high school players in the Portland area,” said Glanville. “Everyone knows Frank can coach, but now it’s time to tell the world he knows who can play at this level from this area. That will be his plus with us.”

When Geske took over as the Vikings’ running backs coach, he had immediate results. Geske guided senior Joe Rubin to a 1,702-yard season - the second best in PSU history – in 2005. Rubin earned first team All-American honors. He was led in the backfield by multi-talented fullback Allen Kennett. Both players were named first team All-Big Sky as the Vikings led the league in rushing for the second straight year.

As Portland State incorporates the Run-and-Shoot for 2007, Geske will be very familiar with the scheme. “Our passing game for 20 years while I coached at the high school level was based on Mouse’s philosophies,” he said.

Geske will work with the Vikings’ new full-time, one-back set, called the fullback or s-back. He will have a variety of talent to work with in Mu’Ammar Ali, Bobby McClintock, Olaniyi Sobomehin, James Magee and Kyley McCrae.

"Representing Portland State and getting a chance to coach with Coach Glanville and Mouse Davis I have yet to fully appreciate,” Geske said. “Soaking up what Coach Glanville has to say is going to benefit me personally as well as the program.”

Geske spent 26 years in Oregon high school coaching, the last nine of which were as Head Coach at Tigard High School. Tigard was 9-2 in 2004, winning the Pac-9 league title. Geske led Tigard to a 2003 OSAA 4A State Championship. He was league Coach of the Year seven times and state coach of the year once. Geske was 72-29, winning two league titles in nine years at Tigard. The Tigers program had been 3-24 in the three seasons prior to Geske’s arrival.

During his tenure at Tigard, no other team in the state had a longer streak of playoff appearances with the exception of Jesuit High School. Geske coached seven straight league Offensive Players of the Year at Tigard.

Geske was the Head Coach at Franklin High School in Portland from 1985 to 1995. His teams went 57-49 and won a first-ever playoff game in school history.

Geske holds the distinction of winning the most games as Head Coach at both Tigard and Franklin. He also coached in five Les Schwab/Shrine Bowl games. In 1992, Geske was named Oregon Humanitarian Coach of the Year.

A 1978 graduate of Pacific University in Forest Grove, Geske has a degree in Education. He played four seasons as a slot back and running back for Head Coach Frank Buckiewicz.

Geske will be the last holdover from Walsh's staff.

You think so? any clue who the others that would be hired will be? JG mentioned looking all over the country but I haven't heard many names

Like i said in one of the posts is that alot of players were out on the newly improved rec field with play sheets two weeks ago so I'm very sure that all the QB's are studyin the new play books when there not studyin for finals! I also would not garauntee that White gets the starting roll. I would not be suprised who will get the for sure job until the third week of fall practice. None of you really got to see Tyge play, however I watched the kid play in practice before he got hurt and the kid is extremely talented! Throws the purest pass I have ever seen in a kid his age too. If he ever threw a bad pass it was off mark but was never thown badly! I'm really glad that we have both White and Howland competeing for the position because they are both good!

Very true, ask anyone that's knows the the R&S offense, it isn't about which QB is better but which QB got a better grasp of the offense, this spring should be interesting.

I cant wait either! I will do my best to make it over to the stott rec field to take some picks to post here on the forum. Also Within the next two weeks I will make my way over to the newly improved rec field to take some picks to post on here as well for you all who are out of state.

I really like that fact that the starting QB position is unknown for both for the fact that it will drive them to work harder on the off season to make themselves better and more competitive for the position. That being said for our case creates a more formidable leader and talented starting QB.

I don't think so. It says so in the press release. If JG is looking all over the country, the staff may not get filled out very fast. The candidates have to be flown out here and then salaries negotiated, etc.

Brian Smith Selected As Offensive Line Coach

Brian Smith
Brian Smith is the latest assistant football coach to be hired at Portland State University. Head Coach Jerry Glanville announced Smith as his new offensive line coach as he rounds out his staff prior to the start of spring football.

“The strength of our coaching interviews was the quality of offensive line coaches that we talked to,” said Glanville. “But there are only three line coaches in the country that have the knowledge of our pass protection and blocking schemes that we use in the running game. Brian’s past history with the Run-and-Shoot puts us two years ahead of anyone else we could have hired.

“Brian not only played in the system at Hawai’i, but was recommended by the two best quarterback coaches in the United States: Mouse Davis and June Jones.”

“He’s familiar as both a player and a coach with what we do on the offensive line,” said Davis, the Vikings’ new offensive coordinator, who worked previously at Hawai’i and is the creator of the modern Run-and-Shoot offense. “Brian’s had an excellent opportunity to learn now as a coach and combines that with being an excellent technician of the position and having overall knowledge of the game.”

Smith looks forward to getting started at Portland State: “This is a great opportunity for me to work for two coaches that are as experienced as Coach Glanville and Mouse. I am looking forward to working for Mouse again and continuing my development as a coach in the Run- and-Shoot offense.”

Smith comes to Portland State after working as a graduate assistant at Oregon State in 2006. The year prior he was an assistant coach at California Lutheran.

A four-year letterman (1998-2001) as a center at the University of Hawai’i, Smith helped the Warriors capture a share of the Western Athletic Conference title and the Oahu Bowl in 1999. Smith graduated from Hawai’i with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies.

Smith was in the summer training camps of the Baltimore Ravens in 2002 and the Green Bay Packers in 2003 as a player. He began his coaching career during the 2003-04 school year as an assistant football coach at Royal High School in Simi Valley, Calif., and as an assistant wrestling coach at Agoura High School in Agoura Hills, Calif.
