Yeah, the high was 5 I believe. They brought warm clothes that they all wore, sideline coats, etc. I believe they were drinking warm chicken broth and had a warm change of clothes for the second half too. The Griz were playing the macho card and came out in short sleeves, said the cold wouldn't affect them, etc. The Coastal Carolina team accepted the fact that 5 degree weather would affect their athletic performance, and planned accordingly. Bad decision on the Griz part. Your body doesn't function well in 5 degrees in a t-shirt. I believe they're coach did all the research and bought the extra cold weather gear himself, smart move.
There's an even better post in that thread, the low that day was 6F... Now suddenly griz fans remember it being -35F, talk about delusional.

From the Missoulian

"In fact, the stadium recorded a temperature of minus 5 degrees with a Hellgate wind chill of minus 22, beating the previous record of 6 degrees, when the Griz kicked off at 10 a.m. against Stephen F. Austin in December of 1995".

Perhaps not -35 but certainly colder than your claim of 6F.

So we know it was cold, but the real question is- was it loud?

Excellent. Simply excellent.

FWIW, 6 Fahrenheit is really damn cold. Kick up a little wind, and you're talking brutal cold.

It was brutally cold today, and we aren't even there yet. I found myself wondering what it would be like for anyone on the sidelines in particular. They need to do whatever is necessary to stay warm, not be tough guys. Cold muscles are tight muscles. Thankfully, I think the coaches are too smart to not make every preparation necessary to excel in the conditions. Hopefully, wind is minimal as that at least helps.

A few years ago Coastal Carolina went into Msla during playoffs in very cold conditions and whipped the Griz partially due to better preparation. The Griz players thought Montana boys are tough and don't need to dress right and the Chanticleers stocked up on under garments that kept exposed skin covered. As I recall they also had warm drinks of some sort on the sidelines to keep core temps up. Was it chicken soup? Anybody else remember that?

http://missoulian.com/sports/college/montana/football/coastal-carolina-knocks-out-montana/article_fd32c1e2-5f69-11e3-97ea-001a4bcf887a.html

Disappointing loss = correct. Your recollection = not so accurate. Very good CCU performance, Wind, failed 4th down plays, QB wearing gloves and inaccuracy factors were more relevant than clothing or chicken soup. just my :twocents:

Once upon a time, long, long, ago.......

The tv said 21` but that was at the airport, game was at 1` when done.

Warm chicken broth, dry half time clothes, warm dry extremities.

Zenner was one tough dude but always had a guy on the sideline covering him asap on sidelines.

Anyway looks like you guys have a high around 6` with sun. Good luck.

Just a post from a bored Bobcat fan helping you fill in time for those of you spinning your wheels.

We only had 7 or 8000. Hope you guys fill it up . I love cold snow games!

I certainly hope the coaches and equipment staff are heeding the weather forecast and preparing.

Note;
Moglia and Pelini are acquaintances
I expect the Penguins will be as prepared as possible.

Much like your stadium throughout the playoffs. Talk about dismal attendance. Have there even been 5k there?

Sorry, you brought it up and I couldn't help myself ;) For real though, it's crazy to see how small the attendance figures are at a lot of these games, including EWU. I'm guessing with the cold those numbers aren't going up this weekend?

Actually just looked it up

6085 at first one, followed by 5150. You guys are probably doing better than some but what is that, 50% capacity?

I’m pretty sure there will be a “Best Stadium and Fan Base” award presented at half time in Frisco.

Capacity is 8600. Griz math... I'll give you a pass.

I could have sworn I've seen folks on this board saying there were 10k at this game, or 10k at that game. Had no idea capacity was only 8600. Hope it fills up this weekend.

The Penguins have the luxury of an indoor practice facility, looks nice.

With temporary bleachers and club level areas, capacity is bumped up to above 10k. However, NCAA doesn't allow those things for playoffs, so official capacity is 8,600. With frigid temps and no students this Saturday, I'll be happy if we reach 7k. It's just the nature of the beast.

That's correct. Season average during the regular season was above 10k with crowds for the ISU and Montana games close to 11k, but that's with additional seating.

We're basically averaging 40-50% below our regular season attendance during the playoffs. School being out doesn't help, but the biggest thing has been the weather.

Thanks for the info. I was starting to think I imagined that number. Some defensive folks for sure. Good luck Saturday. I always root for the big sky. I'm hoping the cold doesn't hurt the passing game as YSU is probably thrilled with the weather.

I'm showing high of 8 on Saturday with low of -2. That is really cold. However, it's not the worst thing in the world as long as there is no wind. Any word on wind conditions?

It may wind up being revised higher as 8 is 6 degrees higher than what was projected for Saturday as of yesterday.

You start adding wind to that ambient temperature and you start getting into a health hazard.
