Conference Realignment

Sam Houston State and Jacksonville State leaving FCS for Conference USA.

Most interesting not affecting Hornets is that FBS independent New Mexico State is leaving the WAC and joining Conference USA as a full member. This has huge impact on Hornet Baseball.

Been saying this for a long time. Baseball should go back to the Big West. We might not win as many games but if our program is a good as it advertised itself to be, then it shouldn’t be a problem. Reduce that travel cost, play against natural rivals and in a better conference. If BigWest takes us, should be a no brainer here

Big West for OLY! FBS Independent! Lol

Big West for OLY! FBS Independent! Lol

  100%!

There’s been talks about the NCAA restructuring where P5 will split off on their own and G5 and top half of FCS will merge. If that’s the case, stay in the BigSky. But heck, majority of SacState fans see no difference between Montana and New Mexico State, so C-USA, need a new member? Lol football only and Oly in Big West! Lol

C-USA would take Sac City over Sac State. Look at that ridiculous DI gym!
No conference will accept this program with the lack of facilities, or leadership vision to make it happen. Bank it. If there is a poster picture most appropriate for representing Kalifornia Soclialism it is Sac State.

For 50yrs. this school has done nothing but collect welfare for its existence from the state and now it is behind the eight ball for having not developed the strong bonds with business, which operate on Capitalism, to supply partnership's to the school. Why is there no Blue Diamond Stadium? Or how about the Tomato Growers Assoc. Bowl?
Sac State leadership is sitting there waiting for somebody to give them a handout instead of beating down doors. Same with mask mandate BS, who cares how many show up?

With the # of students, athletic budget $$$ and market exclusivity, it is almost criminal Sac State is not Fresno State or SDSU level.

Nah, Golden1 would be used. No way the Nest is a hold up for any plausible FBS invite with G1 as a viable alternative.

That said, CUSA is the last lifeboat out of FCS. With pending news of MTSU and WKU going to the MAC, CUSA desperation to stay an FBS conference will force them to invite any FCS program even thinking about FBS.

Kinda like how PSU uses Hillsboro stadium?

I dont realistically see that happening, here is why:

1. Queens have sucked for so long, more than Hornets BB, that Golden1 management would be fearful of the Hornets catching fire and providing D1 competition. Not good to show up your hosts.
2. G1 is expensive, they will want the concessions/parking/% of gate. Cant turn an ROI with 895 people showing up. Not to mention laughable volumes of open seats.
3. Perpetual scheduling nightmares. Again, look at PSU and getting kicked out of Providence Park by the pro soccer team.
4. No existing arrangement exists today, if I am vetting the Hornets they get a F as this should be done by now and playing 1/2 games there.

We’re never going to get the “EC” from the WREC - at this point I would be happy following the Stott Center remodel strategy that PSU used, with hopefully a little more capacity by widening the footprint in the yosemite hall area…

Looking deeper, You gotta demo all of Yosemite Hall, the pool, and the ropes course (that can go anywhere).

Use that footprint to build something multilevel, with new softball, volleyball, soccer, and basketball locker rooms and offices. There is plenty of parking, adjacent parking structures, access roads, and could be a beautiful complex as you drive around the campus. Keep some classrooms in there for kinesiology, etc to make that crowd happy.

While we’re at it, let’s buildout the baseball clubhouse between the field and the road with awesome hornet branding. We gotta spend all that ARA money! Lol

I was thinking exactly the same thing!!!

I'm ready to concede that after seven years of false hope, I fear the event center is a dead issue. In fact, I'm planning to adopt a new screen name to reflect the non-existent relationship between Sac State and the Sacramento community. :tothehand: I don't know how an expanded capacity to the Hornets Nest site is going to work, but at this point, I would hope Robert Nelsen and "No Kevin Johnson" Mark Orr would look into it. Beyond that, the disconnect between the campus and Sacramento lives on. :ohno:

I still feel swindled by the vote from 2004. I still go to games, but have held on to my pledge to NOT pledge money until there is a firm event center plan in place.

Nothing like the PSU - Hillsboro situation. G1 is a state of the art NBA venue. Hillsboro is a state of the art rec center/complex.

I've heard from multiple folks in the AD that there is a standing offer from the Kings/G1 to play more games there. I have no idea what the terms would be, but it's in the Kings/City's best interests to host as many games/events as possible. Also not sure why Katz doesn't want to play more games there as he is the reason the offer has not been acted upon. We'll see if the next MBB HC acts on it.

And  at the idea of the Kings being worried about a bottom tier program like Sac State outshining them. That's just comical. Even if Sac State was a high mid major program, they'd still not be worried about that.

Agree on all points here.

Home games at G1 would indeed be the solution if a move up offer came Sac State's way.

The football stadium, with all it's needs for upgrades, at least meets the necessary seating capacity for FBS.

What ever happened to the Power of 1,000 Hornets fund raising campaign for an events center. The first million dollars got raised and then no news, no updates, no continued marketing efforts for the past 6 years or more . Just a very old link on hornetsports.com

Thought the athletic dept. had fundraising employees in place but perhaps that is not so .

Somewhat related. If (when) Sam Houston moved to CUSA, does that mean that Sac State for the first time ever, will host an FBS at Hornet Stadium?

I wonder if there’s a “buy out” clause for the home - and - home agreement with Sam Houston. Might even just be a “cancel” clause. They’ll be playing with more scholarship by 2023, the first scheduled meeting, so definitely disadvantage there straight off the bat.

Watching the Sac State /Portland State volleyball match on ESPN plus right now
The remodel and expansion of the Portland State arena looks great.

And the soon to open Idaho Credit Union arena at the University of Idaho looks beautiful Great athletic facility improvement at a small college in a small town in a small state.

I didn’t think of this. They would likely buy us out and get a cupcake at home to kick off their FBS tenure.

If they’re going to buy us out, it would have to be around to 250-400k range. How much it usually cost for the Hornets to go to a “play-up” G5 game instead of a home-and-home. Wonder if Sam Houston would pony up.

Does the WAC have FBS intentions? If so, let’s become full time members with UCD - doubt they’ll want to leave their sweet big west/big sky arrangement…

I think WAC FBS intentions took a huge hit with Sam Houston and New Mexico St. going to CUSA. Those two were the main drivers of the conversation. Plus, G5 would just poach (as CUSA) if any Conference in the FCS thinks of moving up. G5 doesn’t make enough from CFP to split the pie with another conference.

I still don’t know why Admin has not pushed more for us to be in the BWC. Our best chance was taken by Cal State Bakersfield. BWC would have gladly took us/UCSD rather than CSUB/UCSD

Not comparing the actual facility, comparing the private ownership of a facility that can quickly turn sour and eviction can happen.
