They will be joining as football members only! The great thing about this, we renew the rivalry with Poly and Causeway will be guaranteed to be the last game of the year!

“One source said that the addition of Cal Poly and UC Davis would not take place until 2012 at the earliest.”

There are a few things going through my mind regarding this move.
  • 1. This is great news for football. We are guaranteed to have at least one high attendance game per year and we will see a slight reduction in travel costs with 2 opponents being a bus ride away. This is a huge win for the fans.
    2. This is terrible news for all other sports. Sac State is now at a huge disadvantage as we will have to send our sports across the western US. If we are to be in the FCS for the long term, it would be wise to somehow, some way move all non-football sports to the Big West.
    3. This all may mean nothing if the move to the WAC is made. They join the BSC in 2012, which could very well be our first season in the WAC. I think this move was made in anticipation of the BSC losing a member or two to WAC expansion in the near future.
    4. “the farm extension” and cp clearly have no intentions of moving to the WAC within the near future which makes Sac State the number one CA school prospect for WAC expansion. This is great news for us WAC supporters.

Not possible. We field several sports that the Big West does not sponsor.

We also field sports that the BSC doesn’t sponsor (baseball, softball, gymnastics, men’s soccer, etc).

SD, how would it be hurting the other sports in the future if it isn't now? I don't think we will move to the BWC for the other sports. If we move conferences, it will be to the WAC.

I didn’t say it would hurt the other sports, just that it would be disadvantageous given that we would spend more budget in comparison to being in the BW for those sports. If the BSC is allowing football only membership why should we not pursue that option?

I think we have a great thing going with most of our sports in the conferences that they are in now, especially our conference titles.

We Aggie fans are thrilled to join the BSC. I for one can not wait for a year when the Causeway determines the BSC Champion. The rivalry just got better. Good luck this year, see you in November.

I agree. Lets hope the 2012 Causeway will be for the BSC crown!

Though on second thought, if we do indeed split into two 6-team divisions, that will mean no true outright conference champion will be crowned because I don't think there will be a BSC championship game.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but:

Sports not sponsored in Big West: Gymnastics, Rowing
Sports not sponsored in Big Sky: Gymnastics, Rowing, Baseball, Softball, Men's Soccer, Men's Golf

I did a quick lookover on the Big Sky and Hornet Sports website so I may not have caught them all.

Welcome gauchofire, you got them correct. We play baseball and gym in the WAC, but with Fresno, Nevada and Boise (gym) gone there goes a good thing.

Fullerton said he wanted to maintain the BSC's presence in California, to me, that's a hint that the BSC may be losing Sac State to some other conference. Why else would he allow associate members in football if not to save the conference after it's raided by another conference? Just sayin.

Thanks! I'm a UCSB alum in Sacramento so I'm kind of interested to see what effect this shakeup will have on the Big West Conference. It seems like it would make sense from a financial perspective, and allow Sac St. to consolidate more sports into one conference. It would also give me a few more away games to attend :) Not sure how the rest of the Big West would feel about the move, though.

I like the fact that UCFE and Cal Poly are in the sky but. It is a financial advantage for them if we aren't allowed to explore the option of the Big West for all other sports. Wouldnt be a fair thing to make us keep our other sports in the BSC. I'm sure this was discussed. There may still be some more news to come. Maybe the 12th member will be the new all sports member allowing Sacramento State to move it's sports to the Big West.

I think this puts to rest the WAC move. Without UC Davis or Cal Poly coming with us it wouldn't make sense.
The whole thought was to have regional rivalries with other FBS schools. That couldn't happen now without
the other 2 schools. Well at least in my opinion.

No, the point of moving to the WAC was not to go along with UCFE and Poly, don't know where you heard it, but that's incorrect.

Fullerton is trying to maintain a California presence, why would he need to "maintain" a presence he already has?!?! Sac State, if I'm not mistaken, is in California. This is a preemptive move to lessen the impact of next spring.

I am strongly in favor of moving the rest of our sports to the Big West instead of spreading the sports not offered by the Big Sky all over the place. If it screws up the Big Sky scheduling maybe they can add a non football school school such as U of Denver as has been rumored. The WAC (baseball and gymnastics) may or may not even exist soon, and if it does with only San Jose as the only remaining California member travel would be terrible.
Without Poly and/or davis in the mix I don't think the WAC is that desirable. With only San Jose of any interest, Utah State, Idaho, New Mexico, LA Tech and the potential Texas schools, are not too appealing.
I think that Hawaii will go independent. We might be better off staying put and build our programs and facilites. Down the road after the demise of the WAC maybe the Big Sky (or much of it) will go FBS as a conference.

More than once. This is great news for both Cal Poly and Davis. I am really looking forward to seeing Sac State back on the schedule on a regular basis. I will be one of the fans that will make every game that Cal Poly plays in Hornet Stadium. I think that it is good for Sac State because it add to the Causeway Classic and brings Cal Poly back to Hornet Stadium every other year which will be good for the gate.
