Cory McCaffrey

Frustrating to be a Vik fan because unlike OU where we can read about the James injury and the Thomas injury all the time, or OSU where there was constant coverage of the Agnew injury and the Rogers injury, we can't even hear whether our top guy is out for the season.

Yeah, this is all we've heard....

10/17/11 - Portland State team doctors are not optimistic injured running back Cory McCaffrey, the leading scorer in the Football Championship Subdivision, will return this season from an ankle injury. McCaffrey, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound senior, was injured during the fourth quarter of Saturday's 30-24 Big Sky loss at Montana. His lower left leg has been placed in a boot and he is walking with crutches. McCaffrey leads the FCS with 13 touchdowns and 15.6 points per game through five games. He missed one game in Portland State's 3-3 season. He has rushed for 731 yards on 122 carries. Freshman running back Shaquille Richard, who has rushed for 226 yards and one touchdown on 59 carries, stands to pick up some of the lost production. - The Sports Network

That's because, as far as the Oregonian is concerned, we barely even exist.

Another player who should see extended playing time is freshman running back Shaquille Richard. Richard should see the majority of the snaps that went to senior Cory McCaffrey before he sustained a season-ending injury last week at Montana.

Guess that's a wrap on McCaffrey running the ball at PSU. :-(

Five games, 146.2 per game, and 13 TDs. Not too shabby, but it would have been nice to see some PSU records fall.... I think the TDs in a season record is 21, and that would have been beaten.

Heck, he wouldn't even need to play today and still could have hit 21. Very hard to see this happen, because he was on the right track to maybe lead the nation in rushing yards (not to mention that losing him hurts our chances of winning games).

I think he stands a good chance to get a medical redshirt. If a player has not had a normal redshirt season that makes them far more likely to be granted the medical RS. I think James Rodgers played about as many games last year as McCaffrey has and he got the extra year primarily because he had not redshirted before.

Wow, this would be incredible. Anyone who knows anything else about the possibility of a redshirt for CM, let's hear what you know. He deserves it. In both of those Glanville years, he was hardly on the field.

Ditto. Getting another year with McCaffrey in the backfield would be exciting. :)

I don't claim to know a ton about this, but I did look into it when there was talk of James Rodgers getting a medical redshirt.

This was from OSU's website after the decision was made:

He qualified for a medical hardship per NCAA rules - 14.2.4 - "a student-athlete is eligibile if he/she has participated in a maximum of 30 percent of the scheduled games" - Rodgers participated in four of the team's first five games which is actually 33 percent, but the NCAA rounds up the total games to make it four competitions allowed - he missed the Oct. 2 Arizona State game with a concussion. The medical hardship was granted by the Pac-10 Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee.

If this is what it is based on, it doesn't look promising. Cory played in 5 games as a freshman, 5 games as a sophomore, 11 games as a junior, and six this year. All are over that 30% mark. Of course, I'm absolutely hoping I'm wrong.

Can we tell them that JG didn't know what the hell he was doing in CM's is freshman year? :-p

For the medical redshirt, it depends on the length of time missed and severity of the injury. Pretty sure Hubel and Tygue Howland only got theirs because of season-ending injuries. Cory's injury is season-ending as well, but that's because we're halfway through the season already, and it's not like he tore his ACL.
