In the FCS Huddle: FBS-to-FCS transfers to watch

A transfer energizes a fanbase like little else during the offseason in the Football Championship Subdivision.

If their favorite school is willing to take on such a newcomer from a Bowl Subdivision program, fans reason that he must be a special player and will make an impact without any doubt.

Many times, it pans out that way. Last year's Walter Payton Award winner, Eastern Washington quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, who also led the Eagles to the 2010 FCS national championship, was the epitome of what a school can gain in a highly regarded transfer.

Not all transfers will be hits, of course - some will be a swing-and-a-miss for a school.

At this time of the year, though, fans came dream big with their team's new addition.

Following are FBS-to-FCS transfers to watch this season:

D.J. Adams, RB, Portland State :D (from Maryland) - Graduation depleted the Vikings' running game, but they hope Adams is an immediate cure. He scored 11 touchdowns for a Maryland freshman record in 2010, but his playing time decreased last year under first-year Terrapins coach Randy Edsall (only 40 carries). At 5-foot-10, 220 pounds, Adams was often used in short-yardage situations, but his power style fits the Vikings' system, and that will increase his touches.

An article in The Oregonian about D.J. Adams by our very own Ian Ruder:

DJ Adams Named Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week

Senior running back DJ Adams rushed for 208 yards on 14 carries, scoring two touchdowns and leading the Vikings to a 41-10 at UC Davis last Saturday. For his performance, Adams was named the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Portland State rolled up 601 yards of total offense on 60 plays, averaging 10 yards per play against UC Davis. With 427 rushing yards on only 38 carries, the Vikings averaged 11.2 yards per rush. Adams was even better, averaging 14.9 yards per carry. He had a career-long 85-yard touchdown run, and a 27-yard touchdown run in the game. The Vikings came within 10 yards of the PSU single-game rushing record (437 vs. Idaho State, 2012).

Adams now leads the Big Sky Conference in rushing and ranks 12th in the nation at 122.8 yards per game. His seven touchdowns also lead the league. Adams has scored 19 rushing touchdowns in 15 career games at PSU to rank 11th all-time.

In the Viking running game at UCD, PSU's quarterbacks were effective as well with redshirt freshman Paris Penn gaining 74 rushing yards on three carries and sophomore Kieran McDonagh rushing for 57 yards on eight carries with two touchdowns. Junior running back Shaq Richard added five carries for 44 yards and freshman Nate Tago had eight carries for 44 yards. Remarkably, all five runners had at least one carry of 22 yards or more.

PSU now averages 328.0 rushing yards per game to lead the NCAA I FCS level. PSU's 612.0 yards of offense per game ranks second in the nation. The Vikings are averaging 42.8 points per game to rank 11th in the country.

The Big Sky's Defensive Player of the Week is Anders Battle of Northern Arizona. The Special Teams Player of the Week is Montana kicker Ben Worst.layer of the Week

I recently had another visit from PSU's international affairs office here in Suzhou. The last time they were here, I asked for a PSU ball cap to go with my PSU jersey and polo shirt, but about a couple weeks before they came I tweeted DJ a request for a autographed picture. I am happy to say DJ was glad to oblige.

pics are too big to post here, check them out on my twitter feed at https://twitter.com/Caseyorourke

DJ's twitter seems to indicate he has been picked up by San Diego, but I haven't seen anything official yet. Disregard, I saw a tweet from PSU Vikings says DJ was signed as a free agent by SD

Cowboys to work out RB

http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4731440/cowboys-to-work-out-rb" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

With Ben Malena expected to miss significant time with a quadriceps injury suffered in Thursday’s preseason loss to the San Diego Chargers, the Dallas Cowboys will work out running back D.J. Adams, according to a source.

Malena, an undrafted free agent from Texas A&M, was hurt in the second half and was on crutches after the game. He faced an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster, but the Cowboys liked his versatility and ability to play special teams.

Adams will work out later today for the coaches and could sign. He signed with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent out of Portland State and was cut in June. He ran for 1,600 yards and 19 touchdowns last season.

Cowboys sign RB D.J. Adams

The Cowboys signed running back D. J. Adams, and he is expected to be at the afternoon practice.

Adams, an undrafted rookie from Portland State, is needed to bolster a running back corps thinned by a quad injury to rookie Ben Malena. Malena was injured in Thursday’s 27-7 preseason-opening loss to the San Diego Chargers and was placed on the no-recall waivers with the waived/injured designation.

“We don’t tihnk it’s good,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said of Malena’s injury. “He hurt his quad and his tendon and probably a pretty serious injury. So he’s going to be out for a little bit. He’s done a really good job up to this point. We wanted to see him play. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen this preseason. At some point, we might want to give him a chance again.”

Adams signed with the Chargers after the draft but was cut in June. He began is college career at Maryland before transferring to Portland State, rushing for 1,600 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior.

The Cowboys also are expected to sign a kicker Saturday.
