Daddy ball

Just heard from several players that Knipp's daddy called Boyer 3 weeks ago and told him if he doesn't start, that little Jakey is transferring. I was wondering why Newsome was so abruptly removed from each game and now never gets a chance to sniff the field even when Knipp has played so poorly - now I know why:

Start 1 at S Utah - lost 30-3 to a 3-9 team from last year
Start 2 vs Weber State - down 31-0 at half at HOME and Knipp stayed in. They were 2-10 last year!
Start 3 at Sac State - scored 2 FG's against a team that could be worst team in FCS vs pass. If not for turnovers and 100 yard return, would have lost 34-6. This team was made up of mostly freshman playing per the announcer.

Start 4 vs UC Davis at home - another tough game for Knipp, these guys were 2-9 last year. Maybe he can lead us to a score in the first half and keep his job in this HIGH POWERED UP TEMPO OFFENSE.

Kudos to daddy Knipp for getting his boy playing time - took a chance and it paid off.

Even if that did happen, is there any evidence that Coach Collins would have benched him without the call? Maybe he was going to play him anyway.

Just from my watching the games on the Internet, I think Knipp does a better job than Newsome was doing. They both seem to be struggling and I hope we get some better play from the receivers to help them out.

After watching the scrimmages, it was clear to me that Knipp is the future. Maybe this is an indication that Collins got a vote of confidence from Dunn to start the kid and that this year's lumps could lead to next year's success. . . . Just a theory but it is as verifiable as the "daddy phone call" claim.

From what I've seen, Newsom and Knipp have been about equal this season, and when that's the case I say go with the frosh and give him a chance to develop instead of the senior who, well, won't.

Being a former coach for over 34 years, I find it hard to believe that Coach Collins would take a threat from a parent. That said, I agree that Knipp has talent, however, I believe that Newsome might be the better QB for this "unfocused" team. For instance, at least twice a game, Boyer has elected to slow down the tempo on crucial 3rd down (and a couple of 4th down plays) plays in which we have been called for delay of game. I believe that because Newsome has more experience, he would have "on his own" called a timeout. Instead Knipp just waits for the call and because it comes in late (thanks Boyer) we get a penalty. This is just one example of why I think Newsome would be better at this time. Another reason is because I think Newsome would hold up better under the constant beatings.
Btw, I wrote a letter to both Coach Collins and Coach Boyer on Monday and suggested that they ditch the no huddle Tempo scheme and go back to huddling. It will: 1. cut down on mistakes because the players will have more time to settle down and focus on their assignments, 2. give more rest for our talented but struggling defense, and 3. allow the players to remember that execution and being prepared winds games, not out-scheming the other team and over-thinking the play calling. I also gave them two keys to follow:
1. Coach the player, not the scheme.
2. It's better to have a poorly called play executed perfectly, than a perfect play executed poorly. In other words, Boyer is over-thinking the play calling.
A No Huddle Tempo scheme might work in the future, but for whatever reasons (and they have been mentioned many times on this message board by all of you), this team is un-focused and is rarely prepared to play. The playyers have the talent and heart. Go Bears!

The way things have played out this season it sure looks like this is an accurate account. Regardless of who we think is a better player, this is a lowly Pop Warner move. Something like this should never be acceptable. I haven't seen or heard absolute proof of it, but the majority of the players believe it happened. These young men are very observant and are usually well aware of the happenings.

Well put. You wouldn't happen to know coach Kay Dalton by any chance would you kaydee? It would be interesting to get his take on things.

Calling bullshit on that claim that Jacob's Dad called Boyer. Great family, humble to a fault...that phone call is about as likely as Collins shouldering the blame for a loss and not throwing his players under the bus. Jacob was tremendous high school athlete at Ralston Valley...good work ethic, SMART. He doesn't need Dad to pick up the phone.

I agree, sounds more like a rumor started by someone loyal to Newsome IMO.
