San Bernardino Arroyo Valley receiver Damon Ogburn has chosen to attend Idaho State on a football scholarship, Hawks coach Marcus Soward said early Sunday (Jan. 31).

Soward received a text from Ogburn on Sunday morning and said he thought his standout two-way player made the choice early in the morning before boarding a plane back to Southern California.

"I couldn't be happier for him," Soward said. "He's a great kid. He's come a long way and has developed every year. I'm excited for him."

Ogburn is the second Hawk to accept a scholarship in the past five days. Linebacker Ofa Fifita chose to attend Fresno State on Wednesday.

Idaho State coach John Zamberlin visited Arroyo Valley on Thursday before Ogburn's official visit to Pocatello, Idaho this weekend, Soward said. Before that, Bengal coaches had also been through the west-side San Bernardino campus.

"He seemed real genuine," said Soward of Zamberlin. "He's academically oriented and that's good because Damon is an academics-first guy."

Zamberlin, whose contract was extended through 2011, has been under some fire throughout his three-year tenure which has produced just a 5-29 record. The Bengals have not had much on-field success, which has raised the ire of some fans, but the coach has raised graduation rates in the program -- perhaps by bringing in good student-athletes like Ogburn (3.0 GPA) and keeping a close eye on them.

Ogburn can also catch the ball and knows what to do with it afterward. He latched onto 50 passes this past season for 1,022 yards and 13 scores (15 touchdowns overall.)

On defense, he averaged four tackles per game and had two interceptions and also returned a fumble 55 yards.

The Bengal coaches will probably take a look at Ogburn on both sides of the ball, Soward indicated.

Arroyo Valley has had a nice record of players landing scholarships under Soward, as it did under previous coach Tony DiThomas. Besides Fifita and Ogburn, linemen Michael Philipp (Oregon State) and Chris Bradford (Montana) received rides last season and quarterback/defensive Robert Fuller and lineman Keenan Brown earned scholys two years ago.
