Defense

Now that I'm back to being obsessed with football....

Here is the defensive depth chart as I see it at this point. CB and SS/FS depth may be an issue. Injuries could really impact us. The front seven appears stacked.

RC: Stanley Jackson, Deshawn Shead
ROLB: Ryan Pederson, Jake Fetzer
RILB: Andy Schantz, Dallas Smith, Sam Gordon
RE: Joe Ma'aseia, AJ Nielsen, Jordon Spence
DT: Johnathan B-N, Lloyd Talakai, Jermaine Jacobs
LE: Josh Evans, John Shackford, Travis Beckley
LILB: Ronnie Fa'avae, Logan Dose, Erik Pedersen
LOLB: KJ McCrae, David Pedersen
LC: Reggie Jones, Tristan Patin, Onu Onu
FS: Jordon Brown, Matt Bramow
SS: Aaron Dickson, Michael Wightman

*Colton Russi to redshirt
*Either Pick or Patnode will see some snaps in the safety position.

I don't want to make assumptions at LE given that Shackford didn't play in the spring game, so he could swap with Evans.

Thoughts?

You are overlooking SOPH ILB #91 Rory Richards...He was second string last year and played over all the other linebackers except for Schantz in the Sping for the first team. He played really well at the first two short scrimmages but didn't see much of him in the spring game.

Also I see Dickson and and Mike Wightman starting at the two safety spots.

And Jonathan B-N is too small to play DT in a 3-4 defense... great motor guy, great intensity, but he'll have to settle for rotating as a completmentery DE in passing situations.

i disagree, i feel that Johnathan B-N could start at defensive end and do very well. Why make someone with intensity and a motor be a back up. Have you seen him in person? He is 6'3 260, I think this guy just carries his weight well. Him and shackford are almost identical in terms of build

I'd love to see J B-N play alot...anyone with his intensity is a guy you want on the field. All I meant is that the coaches seem to be soooo high on the guys that THEY brought in that J B-N, a smaller sized DE for a 3-4 defense, may be reduced to a rotational player.

The coaching staff can be as high as they want on the players that they brought in, but let us not forget what the Run & Shoot does to defensive rotations. The days of the Walsh Run/Run/Pass offense are gone. How many times did the Run & Shoot push our defense into 85-100 downs per game last year? Regardless of who starts, 'rotational' players will see major downs and contribute. It's not the talent of our starters on defense that will make or break some games next year, but the depth of our entire defense...

You guys are absolutely correct. I just hope the guys who where here before Glanville get a fair opportunity to play. It's kind of disheartening to watch those players who have put 3-5 years of their time, energy, blood, sweat and tears into a program, just to sit or stand on our sideline. All because a coach wants to play HIS recruits. Last year we saw the entire dynamics of a team change, but talent is talent, and we shouldn't pass up on the boys who have been in Portland State pads for more than 1 season.

I have to agree with both of you as the Run and Shoot does put alot of pressure on the conditioning of the defense. Rotation is especially important along the D Line as they are the key to the defense occupying bkockers and establishing a pass rush. Along these lines Walsh did bring in alot of good players and it was sad to watch last year as players who had been in the program for 4-5 years and had spent alot of time on the field like Matt Nelson stand on the sideline for their senior seasons. Hopefully these players get a fair shake in the fall when Glanvilles first recruiting class comes in.
