Just heard on the radio that Jackson and PSU will part ways.

Wow. Two games into the season?

I guess we'll see pretty soon if it makes a difference! Nigel to assume DC responsibilities for time being.

Portland State fires defensive coordinator

In kind of an odd twist to Saturday's Washington-Portland State game, Portland State has just announced that defensive coordinator Eric Jackson has been fired.

Here is the release from the school:

Portland State Football Coach Nigel Burton has announced that Defensive Coordinator Eric Jackson has been relieved of his duties, effective Wednesday.
Jackson has been the Vikings defensive coordinator since Burton came to Portland State in 2010. PSU struggled defensively that season, but showed improvement in 2011. However, a step back early this season led Burton to decide that a change was necessary.

Burton will begin immediately seeking a replacement for Jackson, but there is no timeline on when a new defensive coordinator will be hired.

Portland State allowed 32.5 points and 372 yards per game in its first two games of 2012.

My only concern is the last time we had a head coach that was the DC.

That didn't go so well.

We have good athletes, but they didn't do well, to put it mildly.Burton must think he can turn it around fast. Hard to believe he can do it, but we'll see. He does have a lot of experience at DC.

It has been brought up by someone in one of these threads but does anyone know why the hell don't we have a DB coach?

Nigel is and has been the DB coach (or more specifically cornerbacks coach).

Oh, the gloomy mental state of most Portlanders. Good thing you methodically build ships.

Chin up. Stiff upper lip. All that rot.

Jerry Glanville was a lovable hotdog college coach who was a bit over the hill as a head coach, but who also developed Jordan Senn into an NFL player. He was "Mr. NFL" through and through, a visiting ambassador for the League.

Don't you remember what Nigel Burton was doing before coming here? He was the DC at Nevada, and the Wolf Pack are doing very well, having beaten the Pac-12's Cal Golden Bears. How great it is to have Nevada's most recent DC as the Portland State Viking interim DC!
Uh- oh. Not good. Hope this doesn't indicate bad karma going on.

Why, man? This is great news! Try good karma. Very good karma. Courage to overcome sentiment and go with the right decision. I feel for Coach Jackson and wish good for him. But it isn't here and it isn't now. Now Portland State can go forward and progress! This will be news during the broadcast. We're getting the wrong people off the bus in order to get the right people on the bus. I hope Coach Jackson will gain a good placement in a right good place where he fits. Back to the Ivy League?
Slim pickings for a new DC this time of year. Somebody call Greg Lupfer.
Very good idea. He may appreciate an apology, though, for our going for JG when he was right there as interim HC. I think he would understand PSU's getting swept up in all the media hype. He's matured nicely.

Okay. He should hire someone to be the DB/CB coach because it doesn't look like he has spent much time with them.
