Defensive Lineman Honors

I find it amazing that our defensive line has had two of its members named Big Sky Defensive Player of the week for two out of three weeks.

Christian Clark won the honor for his efforts last Saturday and Zack Nash won the honor for the first game of the season. Considering that Clark is only a sophomore and Nash is a RS Freshman, this bodes well for the future of the program. Congratulations to these two young men.

OGDEN, Utah — Sacramento State sophomore Christian Clark was named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced today. The honor is the first for Clark during his career. He is the second Hornet defensive lineman to earn the award this season, joining Zack Nash who was honored following the first game.

Against Southern Oregon, Clark registered a career high six tackles, including 2.5 for loss. The Los Angeles native also had two sacks, forced a fumble and blocked an extra point in the 27-16 victory over the Raiders. Clark’s sack and forced fumble in the second quarter led directly to Evander Wilkins’ 9-yard touchdown run on the following play to give Sacramento State a 21-3 lead.

This season, Clark leads all Hornet defensive linemen and ranks fourth on the team with 15 total tackles. His 3.5 tackles-for-loss and 2.5 sacks are second on the team only behind All-America linebacker Mike Brannon (4.5 TFL, 3.0 sacks).

Weber State quarterback Cameron Higgins and Montana wide receiver Mark Mariani were named co-Offensive Players of the Week while Montana State return man Demetrius Crawford earned the special teams honor.

Sacramento State opens Big Sky play on Saturday against Weber State. The game will kick off at 2:05 p.m. from Hornet Stadium.

OGDEN, Utah — Sacramento State redshirt freshman Zack Nash was named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced today. The honor was the first for Nash during his career.

A native of Vacaville, Calif., Nash helped lead the Hornet defense in a 45-13 win over Humboldt State on Saturday night. Against the Lumberjacks, Nash had a team-high 10 total tackles, including 2.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks. As a team, Sacramento State limited Humboldt State to just 172 yards of total offense.

Portland State’s Bobby McClintock earned the offensive honor after scoring four touchdowns and Northern Arizona’s Robbie Dehaze took home the specials teams award.

Sacramento State will play at Colorado State on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. PDT from Fort Collins, Colo.

Kinda amazing that this would happen when it's our LBers that have been so hyped. I don't think they've been so honored even once this year.

Relax. Season is only 3 weeks old...Mulitalo, Brannon and/or Hickman will get their due. It just tells me the DL is really good, despite being so inexperienced (on paper coming into the season).

No doubt the Linebackers will get their dues. They are great. Jonny O is doing a great job with these guys. Good to have him back (of course, I'm a bit biased in that regard).

Of course that's the reason, HHD. We know how good he is. I'm biased for him, too. I just wish we could get him on the OTHER side of the ball. LOL.

You know, I don't think its likely he will go back to the other side of the ball. I've asked him about that and he really loves coaching defense. Maybe its because he knows all the offensive line tricks. He was a mean Hammerhead!
