The Journal reported this morning that some players unexpectedly didn't show up on the roster recently released to the media. Including offensive lineman Montana Gessell , offensive lineman Josh Cutler, defensive lineman Pat Ryan, linebacker Ed Pritchett, wide receiver Kameron Taylor, defensive back Demetrius Oliver, defensive back DeShawn Perkins, defensive lineman Mitch Word, and offensive lineman Kevin Park.

Does anyone know if this is accurate? Unusual? Unexpected?

Here is a link to the official, updated 2013 roster on the ISU web site:

Montana Gessell is on a LDS mission in CA. He is set to come back in Fall 2015.
It was in the ISJ and message board some of the other players have transferred to other schools.

Chase Glorfield has been doing a great job keeping his blog updated, and many of his ISJ stories are appearing (for free) on ISUVoice.com...

I received an updated roster for Idaho State football during the Big Sky Kickoff event in Park City, Utah. After traveling home and getting back into a routine, I finally had a chance to look over it.

There were also a number of incoming freshmen listed who weren’t part of the original recruiting class as announced Feb. 5.

Offensive lineman Skylar Phillips (Eugene, Ore.), wide receivers Marcus Armstrong-Brown (Napa, Calif.), JoJo Webster (Oak Harbor, Wash.) and Nikko Hayes (Longpoc, Calif.) and quarterback Neil Jewell (Pocatello). I have confirmed previously that Jewell is a walk-on.

A few other names popped up that I had not seen before, but these players were not listed as incoming freshmen.

Kyle Henry, a linebacker from Las Vegas, is listed as a redshirt freshman. CJ Hatchett is a redshirt junior wide receiver from Vancouver, Wash. It appears Hatchett was previously at Montana before transferring to Idaho State. Madison Mangum, a wide receiver from Boise and the brother of BYU quarterback Tanner Mangum, will be a redshirt sophomore at ISU.

Expected in my opinion. Spring ball depth charts make some realize they won't be playing. You got missions, lingering injuries and players that were signed late when other kids backed out. When a team loses so many games and a coaching staff is revamped on the defensive side of the ball...kids are gonna check out. The attrition under Kramer has been amazingly low. Often after spring practices, coaches and players sit down and decide what is in the best interest of both parties.

If a player knows that he will not get much playing time in a program than it is best for that player to move on and seek new opportunities. Scholarships are year to year contracts.
