Depth chart update

The preseason depth chart has been updated. I am struck by the depth and experience of this team.
Offense: Potentially the best in Big Sky and top 5 in the nation. Here are the named starters.
QB - Gubrud backup Barriere
RB - Custer backup McPherson
TE - Gilder backup Belk
WR - Grady backup Dorton
WR - Webster backup Jayson Williams
WR - Eagle
LT - Levao
LG - Tayor
C - Blackburn
RG - Meyers
RT- Schlicting

Lets talk offense first and then look at the defense next week.

I agree with you! If we stay healthy, hungry and mentally focused— the Sky is the limit!

I really hope Sam McPearson picks up where he left off in Grand Forks!

Very excited for the season, and excited to see it play out!

Solid line up for sure, sleeper not listed is Talolo Limu-Jones at WR. I think he finds the end zone 8 times and will push for 700 yards, he is a beast.

Not sure I see Eagle as a full time starter. He's a good player, but I don't see him among the best receivers on the team, even in the slot. He's certainly gifted enough to be an impact player, but I think we may have better options.

One area we need to see some improvement is on the OL. We've gotten into a groove where we can pass block against everyone well, but we aren't able to get much push to help the run game. Hopefully this group hasn't been skimping on bench press and dead lift in the offseason. The size is already there.

Still, there's a lot to like about that starting 11, and the two deep is definitely up to the level of two years ago with the exception of WR. It would be impossible for an FCS team to improve on the trio of receivers we fielded in 2016.

Agree with that Dopa, yes these receivers are not the same but Gubrud is 2 years stronger, smarter and more savey. I feel for our play callers, with the potential of this O-line and experience @ QB it will be tough NOT to throw, throw, throw.

Where did you see the Depth Chart? There is another Roster as of July 6th. Fifteen Recruit Players now have numbers we have 102 Players should be out when practices commence. I saw #95 Zion Fa' after the Friday Night Lights game, he came up to my truck, and stated he just can't wait to get on the Field. I think he will be "HELL" on the Field, he is very well built, (like I used to be):) Zach will do a hell of a job as WR, but we still have about 6 more on the team that will make us scared to play. #46 Conner Bauman younger Brother is also coming in, and Players like DJ Dyer, and other OL is returning from injures . We will be OK. Go Eagles!!!!!Vic E. Wallace

So, a couple mistakes and additions. Jack Hunter is listed as the starter at Left Guard and that moves Tristen Taylor to the starter at Left Tackle. Andrew Boston is listed as a backup at WR.

I realize that I am a newbee here, however I would like to share my thoughts on this subject. What really excites me about Eastern football is the same thing that I hold dear to football at the Military Acadamies, and that is the concept of haveing everyone on the roster ready to contribute in whatever capacity the coaching staff believes is their role. Eastern has been fortunite in the past to have those super athleates. However I truely believe that the sucsess to this program has been the continuity in coaching that has led to the beliefe that recruiting the right kind of student athleates leads to sucess through good coaching and hard work. They have proved time and again that if they need to, a dl can be converted to ol, and a tackle can play guard and vice a versa. I have every confidence that the coaches have all the depth they need at every position, reguardless if their a walkon , scholarship, 5 starr or 0 starr recruit, this program and coaches will find a way to compeat for that BSC title and another National Championship! Go Eagles and Dominate the Big Sky!!

You guys think backup QB Eric Barriere will get any real PT? I want to see how he compares to Big Play Vernon Adams.
I am sure he will get PT when we play Central. If he plays at WSU it will be because we got blown out, which I do not expect.

Great post. However, the coaching staff you speak of isn't what it was with Beau Baldwin. Aaron Best is cool, & I'm definitely hoping for him to succeed, however, everybody knows Beau was running that offense & Best was really a Run Game Coordinator or a "Super" O-line coach. How did Eastern win Big Sky titles & a National Championship? Passing. Any 1,000 rushing seasons for a back at EWU in the last 17 seasons? Let's be honest guys. :) :coffee:

Barring any major coaching changes in the future, we’ll always be a pass-first offense. I applaud Coach Best for working more on the running game. We just need a little more creativity with it. We were too predictable in our play calling last season.

And as great as Baldwin’s offenses were, they lacked balance.

Taiwan Jones got 1,000+ yards twice. With the exception of Taiwan Jones (who is still in the NFL) Aaron Best didn't produce a real rushing threat in 17 seasons at EWU. Taiwan Jones had amazing abilities & he didn't get to the NFL because of Aaron Best, he's just a beast. Point is, those Baldwin offense lacked balance because of whom? Aaron Best. Trust me, Coach Best is a great person & hard worker, but this coaching staff has nothing in common with those of Beau Baldwin. I don't think EWU gets another Big Sky ring under his reign, he's got to make me a believer.

I know that I don't have the knowledge of the x's and o's of college football. I like what the Eagles are doing in the weight room, They are training more for power up front, knowing that it takes strength and size to controll the LOS to run the ball more effectively. I like the concept of team both on and off the field and the emphisis of doing well in the classroom. I haven't watched Eastern Football specific to players, for the past 20 years, it's just the overall feeling I get that past coaches are vested in Cheney and it's football culture, much like Boise State. Eastern stays away from JC transfers and brings the kind of guys , a majority from Washington, up through the system like Boise State. These are my feelings of why you are a perenniel power. In some ways I'm sure coach Best dosen't match the skill set of a coach Baldwin, However I believe he has a lot of great attributes that will make him a great leader and coach for this program and lead it to continued sucsess! Personally, I'm not the best at what I do, however my dad taught me that through hard work , hustle , and a never quit attitude great things will happen, Your football team is proof of that! Can't wait for the season to begin, and hope that Eastern obliterates the Black and Gold at Homecoming!!!

All in-state recruits & no transfers huh?

Starting Qb Gage Gubrud is from Oregon.
Backup Qb Eric Barriere is from Inglewood, Ca.
Walter Payton Award winner Erik Meyer? California.
Walter Payton Award winner Bo Levi Mitchell? (Tr)Katy Tx.
Big Play VA Vernon Adams? Taiwan Jones? Shaq Hill? Kendrick Bourne? Kyle Padron(Tr)? I could go on.

With the exception of Kupp, Sherritt & Peach, almost all of EWU’s best players are out of state recruits & transfers.

Also, weight room & “gaining size at O-line” is all Coach Best knows, he’s been an offensive line coach at EWU for 20 years! Last but not least, being a hard worker doesn’t make you a great coach. It also doesn’t magically make you the right man to lead the Eastern Eagles football team. Don’t be fooled by that EKG marketing stuff, if Best changes the offense into a “ground ‘n pound” rushing attack, we’re screwed. Bank it. Anyone going to man up & give me some credit where it’s due? :coffee:

Roger that! Point well taken, didn't mean any harm or disrespect with my post! You all have great season and the best of luck.

I think your comments about coach Best are off base. Obviously he knows more than just the weight room and putting weight on the O-line. He has continued the trend of getting great recruits as displayed by last years class. He has maintained stability of an already great program built by many great head coaches and he has set us up for an epic season this year. Coach Best has never said he wants to be ground and pound. To the contrary, he has said Eastern will always be a passing offense but he'd like to get a little more balance. With Custer and Mcpherson in the backfield I would hope they'd get a few more looks! I am glad we have EKGS in the program. It defines what it means to be an Eagle football player. Coach Best is 100 percent the man to lead this program right now. Being a hard worker is an asset. Give him some time to see what he can add to an already great program before you tear him down. Ill give you credit. Thanks for the ignorant comments!
